Replacing the original tanks in a 1990 22' Cruiser

Hello All,

I've decided to replace the original grey 18 gal fuel tanks in my 1990 22' Cruiser. Do folks have suggestions for a make / model / brand to replace them with?

I think that they are Tempo tanks. Does Tempo have a replacement model? Should I get in touch with the factory to purchase the tanks being put into a new 22C? I'm not sure the new tanks will fit in my 1990 boat.

The replacement factory tanks in my 2005 are very well made Moeller tanks. The discussion is in this thread.

I had a leak, the factory promptly sent me the new tanks, replacement was very easy once I emptied the fuel from the old tanks. The tanks are not bolted down, all you need to do is remove the fuel hose, fill hose, and overflow hose, release the clampdown strap and they will lift out. Not without a little grunting though. In my case, the dimensions of the new tanks were slightly different so I had to remove and relocate the floor strips, filled the old screwholes and drilled/fastened the strips in their new location. It's appropriate to drill larger holes, clean out surrounding balsa core a bit, fill with epoxy, marine "Bondo" or fiberglass then re-drill the screwholes and fasten the strips down.

Medium low skill level required. Cheap shot warning Anything above Brewmeister/lawyer level is sufficient.

I replaced the old gray tanks on my 1992 22 this year. I got the 25 gallon tanks from the factory. Not cheap but I think it was the best thing I've done to my boat. They fit great and you can see at a glance how much fuel you have as they are transparent. So no fuel gauges needed. It really is a major improvement!
 
Thanks everyone for their replies and information. I am waiting to hear back from the factory to see what the cost and availability are of the 25Gal tanks.

Lee - when you say "they fit great" does that mean it required zero modifications to make them work?

I have a transom mounted trim-tab motor that sticks forward about 8 1/4 " with about 4.5" of room on either side (left/right). I am wondering the newer tanks are about the same 27 1/4" wide or longer.

What dimension changed to get the additional 5 - 8 gallons in the tank?

Zero modification needed. I just went out and measured them.
16" high, 18 deep, 27 wide at the top and 22 at the bottom. Shaped perfectly for the hull. Truly a custom fit!

I could be wrong about this but I was told that these tanks will not work in the new 22 with the flat floor. The factory had some left over when I checked last year.
 
After speaking with Dave at the factory I've learned that the current 22' are being built with 19.5 gallon tanks and not the 25 gallon tanks anymore.

The factory is very busy, and I'm thinking that there must be other places to purchase / source replacement tanks for my 1990 22' Cruiser.

Can anyone suggest a distributer or shop to purchase replacement tanks for the original 18 gal tanks?

I think the original 18 gallon tanks are standard replaceable Moller tanks. Measure yours and compare to the measurements in a cagtalogue like West Marine.

The 25 gallon tanks, with their tapered sides, are probably a custom run, made for C-Dory, but that's just a guess.
