I purchase my '89 22' Angler with a '93 enivrude 70 and am looking to repower.

what is better....90hp vs two 50's?

If I go with twin 50's - can the prop do the counter rotating or do I have to request that one motor counter rotates when purchased?

How is the 90 4stroke for trolling vs the 50 4 strokes?

If I go 90hp 4 stroke whats a good size kicker?

Raining and storming so I have time to think!

Hi, and welcome to the Pub. That 2 vs. 1 question has become almost the chicken-or-egg-first type discussion on here. Truth is, there is no "best" answer. What it all boils down to is what makes you happiest to have hanging on the back of your boat. But it is not a trivial question by any means. Whatever you hang back there will cost you plenty.

Your best bet right off the bat is to go to the Outboards and Systems forum on the site (right here) and look through the three pages of topics. Several of them address your dilemma directly, and others will add a lot of insight. And you'll probably even have fun doing it, once you see that we are truly not trying to confuse you.

You should also be able to find some talk about the counter-rotating prop question. I don't think that any of the manufacturers offer that in the smaller hp (< 100) outboards. I do recall seeing some discussion somewhere on here about why it wouldn't even be much of an advantage on the C-Dory.

You'll also find lots of folks willing to offer new or rephrased ideas. And you will most certainly hear from those who insist that their choice (usually the brand rather than the quantity) is the only sensible one. Sadly, you might even find a very few individuals who swear up and down that the choice they made is the absolute worst. But, after listening to us all and reading everything already posted, you will find a bunch of info to guide you. And it really will begin to make sense after a while.

I am looking to repower also and am looking at a 90hp Suzuki for about 10K fully rigged with instruments and teleflex steering cable. I had a 40hp Suzuki 4 stroke on my skiff for 6 years and it was great; I could troll all day and never needed a kicker. I have a 9.9 Johnson kicker now that is fairly new and I will probably keep it as a get home.

Two main engines are just more maintenance in my opinion and 50s would probably be overkill (plus the extra expence). I have no experience with the newer 2 strokes like the E-Tec but I like to boat through the winter and you cant beat a 4-stroke for starting at 10 to 25 degrees.

Listening to all the hoopla about the e-techs being lighter got me thinking, maybe I could slam on a pair of 60 hp e-techs on the stern. looking at the e-tech specs I see a 50 hp honda weighs in at 214lbs and the 50hp e-tech at 240lbs.....seems odd being a 2 stroke and billed as having a lighter higher power to weight ratio...I must be missing something here.

Like Mike says, tons of info to be mined here, it all boils down to whatever you think looks best hanging off the stern....I know one thing for sure, you'll sure enjoy the increased power and quiet regardless of what you end up hanging back there...enjoy the hunt
