I love carrying extra fuel cans aboard that allows me to get fuel at local gas stations, etc. I have been carrying a 5 gallon tank between the fuel tanks in front of the bilge. I'd like to free that space up and I'm considering using Rotopax 4 gallon fuel packs. The plan would be to mount the pack (or two packs) in the splash well.

Has anyone used the Rotopax fuel packs?

Hi Greg, I do not want to hijack the thread, but I do have a quick question on how you mounted the tank on your bike. Is it hard mounted to a hard shell top box?

Well the geek in me forced me to buy some Rotopax tanks. Ended up buying two 4 gallon fuel packs along with the mounting hardware. I'll never save enough from filling up my own tanks to justify the cost, but I love being self sufficient and this will do it. I plan to mount this in the splash well and from my calculations it should work great.

I'm always looking for that perfect sized portable gas tank to fit in between the fuel tanks - well, this should stop that searching.

Don't tell my wife how much these cost compared to our Home Depot red 5 gallon...

It is mounted in two places for strength and rigidity. I used one of their L-shaped mounts bolted to the underlying custom rear rack on the bike and that was great but still to floppy for off road use so yes it is also bolted to the two hard cases attached to that rear rack and it is very solid in that configuration. It all comes off the rack in about 5 minutes and I do clean it up like that for base camping and more serious trail riding. That mount has seen enough abuse to break the welds on the rack where is attaches to the frame of the bike last summer riding remote Nevada mountain routes and the tank mount actually helped hold the rest of it together for the rest of the trip.
 
Cool, ready made saddle tanks. A little pricey, but certainly will work.
