I think I now understand why it seems people don't use the search engine before asking questions.

I searched for " learn tides " and got messages that had nothing to do with learning tides.

The reason for wanting this is I live and boat on the Great Lakes and have to downsize my boat ( 22' C-Dory ) and plan to travel to the coast's.

I took some of the power squadron course's back in the 1970's and never thought I would boat in salt water. LOL

The search feature works ok, but can be a little tricky. You question IMHO would be better answered by doing a search on search engine like google or Bing or the countless others. I think it might help to be a little more specific and try to find a C-Brat in that area. Then send them a private message or start a thread on a specific area and you will get a wealth on information I would think. Most GPS units have a tide table feature built in. They seem to be available at most local bait shops. We use a software program that we run on a laptop called Coastal Explorer and tidal info is suppied. It's also part of the feature set of our Garmin 4208 nav unit. If you want info on the how and when of tides, how full moon, wind can effect them thats a longer story.

This is just a guess but I think that "Search the C-Brats" will only (OK, mostly) bring up items previously posted on the C-Brats. If there have been no postings , for instance, about how to read a tide chart, then it can't and won't be produced. Further, and again just my guess, I think many users of the site simply overlook the search engine until one day they find it and use it. Some old timers may get a little snippy at times when a question is raised that a search of the site would have answered. I don't view it negatively because it gives me a chance to think about the issue and also a chance to help somebody by pointing them in the hopefully right direction. Your question is an example. I think I have put off learning about tides long enough, so I'm going to look into it for my own edification. Thanks for raising the issue.

To try to make this a little clearer, at this time I don't have a C-Dory but when I get one I hope to travel to all of the different coast so that is why I didn't say at a certain spot.

The search engine on many of these sites (not just C Dory) are different than the Google or Bing. You will get almost every word you put in the search; thus many irrevelent. I find that using "C Brat" in the google helps if you want to be specific. But remember that Google ranking of sites are driven by commercial factors, and thus may not be relevant on the first page or so.

You have several good links on tides. All of the tide tables are free thru NOAA on the internet. Equally important is current as well as tide-especially in high tidal range areas. Both tide and current have excellent APPs for I phone and android. One I use daily is "simple tides". It automatically puts in your position, and then you can click on tide stations. Mostly in graphic form, which I like.

Also remember that max flood and ebb tide have different relations to the highs and lows of actual tides depending on the dynamics of the coastal area.

What question are you looking for? Are you looking for tides times and height or , as I expect, are you looking for a why tides do what they do? The first one is easy and others have provided many links for that. The second one is very complicated and could take years to read on and fully understand. But to tell you the truth you dont need to know why tides do what they do on a day to day basis. You just need to know what they are doing.

I always look at the days tides before a trip or every morning while on a trip. With electric charts on everything from my raymarine c-80 to my computer to my phone all with tides and currents ( an much more important bit of info in this area) at the touch of a button its really not hard to know what the tides are doing. Just by looking at a app on my phones home page I see that right now Everett wa has a hi tide of 11.8 ft at 7:08am and a low of 4.1 ft at 1:18pm. so thats a 7 ft swing today, which is a good tide for salmon and crab and not to bad if shrimp is opened. I like a 5 ft or less tide for shrimp. at this very moment the tide is at 10.2 ft and falling. If I was not going to work I would be looking to go fish today around 11 to 4. thats a few hours or so on either side of the low slack. Now I would have to go look up current times to because low or hi tide is not the same as slack current. and when I fish or travel threw passes its slack CURRENT I want not hi or low tide necessarily. Got that? good.

So back to my question, what is your question about tides???

I have a boat what gear would I need to buy if I wanted to successfully go after shrimp? Which tidal stage do you find best for shrimping. What bait do you use. How long do you leave the traps soak?

Will, having shrimped on both coast I can tell you its a totally different setup depending on where you shrimp? Are you talking about coming out here to shrimp or are you talking about shrimping on the east coast?

Here is its traps, line, marker, bait and puller. Just to get started you are looking at $800 bucks. $500 for a puller and the rest for a couple of traps,line and buoys.

if you are talking about in PA. I have no idea. In the North Carolina, to Georgia area it was just a throw net and a bucket, call it $50 bucks. Shrimp where in close to shore and we just tossed the net and hauled them in when there where around. I have no idea if they also used pots off shore also as I did not have a boat then.

In order not to hi jack this thread any more I will post another local how to shrimp thread later tonight.
 
Good grief are you people telling me I have to buy a SMART phone ?
I have a cell phone that is water proof and rugged.

I guess what it boils down to is I didn't pay much attention back in the 70's about how to use a tide table.

I have been studying some of these links and am learning. :)

This isn't about tides, but rather a couple of search tips. You mentioned you searched "learn tides." If I were going to use the search box here for that, I would start with the least number of words, and no plurals. So to begin I would search simply "tide." Then if that brought back too much, I might add the word "learn." I would also think of other words that people learning or using tide info might use, such as "table" or "current" and see what I could get with "tide" and those separately or in combination.
