Side mount dingy lift

Anyone ever try side mounting a dingy like this? We currently carry our RU 260 on a Yakima roof rack and load it from the bow. I would continue to do this in rough weather as it is very secure. However, when traveling short distances, a lash up like this seems like it would work well without the backache of putting it on the roof rack.

Well I guess if you read the copy the rig was born of excess: the wind power was shading the solar power. Kinda funny when you think about it. I always try to imagine what an accessory will behave like under the worst conditions. Might it be a tad unwieldly on a 22 foot boat? Will it still fit in a slip or load on a trailer? Would it be necessary to have it at all for short trips?
 
There are several "side mounts for dingy lift(s)" in the C-Dory family. But they are lifts only, Garhauer comes to mind, mostly, for lifting the dink from the water to the roof. I don't think you would want that much weight, with that lever arm hanging off either side while underway.

I'm not sure but wouldn't it cover up some or all of the side windows?
 
For a short trip would it not be easier just to tow it or tie it to hip?

As Harvey mentioned it would be a lot of weight to add off the side of a 22' boat. I think it would require full tab deployment on the one side versus negative on the other to prevent listing.

Actually I'm surprised Harvey didn't suggest twins - mounting one off each side to act as outriggers. Or maybe mounting them both on hydraulic arms and turning your C Dory into a hydrofoil. 8) :P

Agree with Harvey. Too much weight, too much of a chance of diping into the water. Even on the sail boat that type of "side saddle" is not practical. We used a davit on our radar arch for picking up 15 or 25 hp outboard, but brought the dinghy over the stern, under the radar arch.
On the c Dory 22 we have the Garhauer davit-see image 441 in the Thataway Album. The davit gives you a 5:1 or 6:1 advantae with the tackle on the Garhauer. [/img]
 
I have seen a "catyak" of some brand being short-couple towed like that with one end up on the swimstep, and I had friends who pulled a Walker Bay short-coupled too, and it survived without filling with water, but it did ride up on one of the side waves of the wake so it was canted on a 20 to 30 degree angle when the were running about 20 knots.

As to the "twins idea" Yup, that could work and would seriously increase lateral stability, assuming it was not just hanging there, but latched firmly in position. :mrgreen: I should have thought of that :oops:
