Site Update

Some pretty significant updates were performed to the site tonight. The updates were mostly security patches - you shouldn't notice any differences in the site.

We tested pretty thoroughly, but please report any new problems here.

I did have to sign again, it did not remember me but otherwise everything seems OK.

Didn't notice that while testing, but it makes sense...several of the security patches had to do with user authentication vulnerabilities in the old code.

Thanks for the report.

Yup. I signed in again. Probably a lot did.

B~C's probably responsible 'cause he tried to sign in on the computer from the Clark County Jail.

It took a long time to sequence through to the home page. Then had to sign in.

If this is what I think it is, it's "normal". At least, it's not a result of the updates.

The "Recent Photos" section gets updated every 30 minutes or so. When it does so, it's pretty server intensive; the photo album code is quite primative, and it has to scan all of our photos to determine what to list. The problem only gets worse as our photo count increases.

If you are hitting the home page as the list is being built, you'll encounter a delay. The home page will appear to load about half-way, then pause...I've seen it hang as long as 10 seconds or so.

No easy way around it, with the current photo albums. I've looked at a few alternatives, but they are all a ton of work, and I don't have the time. If things get too bad, we'll either have to increase the time between rebuilding the "Recent Photo" list, or institute higher dues so I can retire now and work on the site full time. I've already spent my first million.

I'm getting a

"Sorry, you can't access that file directly"

error message when trying to view slideshows.

It's working for me, although I only tested it on one album.

- Do you know it worked, on the album you are having problems with prior to the upgrade? None of the updates were supposed to touch the album code, so it's possible this problem existed before for you.

- Does it fail on every album for you? I tried it on this C-Dory Factory album.

- If the album above works, which one did it fail on?

Bill-

I get the same error message on all albums.

Beffore I can make a choice between full screen and limited program options, the screen switches from the highlight picture to the error message.

Joe.

Bill-

I logged out and back in and I get the same message, on all albums, not just my own.

Could it have something to do with my permission status to edit some photo albums other than my own?

It was working fine last night until about 1:00, then went AWOL!

Is my album space too full?

Joe.

Yup, the "Compatible but limited" slideshow option fails for me as well. That's not the default, which is why we've probably not received reports before.

Try this link - it should work for you, assuming a modern browser. It should also reset the cookie on your Mac so that you don't default to "Compatible but limited" when viewing slideshows.

Sorry, Bill, but I get the same response from the link-

goes to the album, and after a second, gives me the error message w/o doing anything.

I did reload my OS the other day, but it worked with the slideshow last night before 1 am.

Joe.

I'll try it with a different browser, and then with a different site.

Joe.

Bill-

Works with Firefox instead of Safari!

But worked with Safari last night until 1 pm......

Go figure!

I'll live with Firefox, just have to transfer all my lists of favorites.

Will also try to update my Safari application......

I can't add pictures...

I just checked, and was able to upload several pics without problem. Tried small pics that required no resizing, and larger ones that did - both uploaded fine.

I've seen this issue before in two situations:

- Uploading HUGE pictures, i.e. the raw 8 megapixel images from a fancy camera. The solution to this issue, is to reduce the image size prior to uploading. The photo album only allows a maximum of 800 pixels wide, so if you reduce it to that size first, you'll avoid the forum software's attempt to resize for you.

- Corrupted jpegs. These are more frequent than one might imagine.

C&S - try uploading a different, smaller image and report back. If things still fail, I'll have you email me the pics, and I'll see if I can upload them. That will help narrow down the problem.

Thanks...
