I'm not saying that this is the best place to go through. I'm not saying you won't ground out. I pushed the waypoint button on both sides where I go through. These are the first waypoints that I have taken down while passing through. I have always gone through by dead reckoning and have never had a problem. I went through on a minus tide and there appeared to be about 9 feet of water under me at the shallowest reading. Be careful about going back in on a big flood as there can be a flow of water like rapids in the Grand Canyon. There will be standing waves on a large flood. Ebbs are pretty mellow compared to the bar.

These waypoints are kind of a north/south line that I follow. Watch for crab pots after you get through to the ocean side. Good luck and have fun. Boated a 28 pound up river bright last Monday.

Great info for those who have not had the pleasure of using the "hole in the wall"
I went in and out last Thursday and never had to slow down coming back in to the river, very unusual. After a long run south to find the kings it is nice to take the short cut on the way in and out.
 
Rogerbum got nailed by a rogue wave or two while in that spot, maybe three weeks ago. Cannot recall the name of the thread. Search on rogerbum.
 
I wouldn't call it a "rogue wave". As indicated in my post (linked to by Joe above) - we were stupidly, intentionally drifting stern first into building confused seas over the sunken portion of the South Jetty. That said, the area there can be dangerous.
 
Holy cow! After reading Roger's story I'm wishing I had never posted about the slot. There was a lot of interest in where the slot was last fall on this web site so I thought I would help out my fellow boaters. The water around the sunken jetty can turn ugly very quickly. That is why the Coastguard calls it the slop hole. If there are big ocean waves, the slot will be ugly too. The slot gives you a way to avoid the bar during a strong ebb. It is not a magic spot that is always calm. Please be careful and if you wish to fish there (there are hundreds of spots more productive than the sunken bar for bottom fish), fish during the slack times. Edit: A few years back, a guy was fishing the sunken jetty in a new Duckworth. A big ocean swell sat his bow down on the sunken jetty. The boat sunk stern first on it's maiden voyage. It's no place to fish unless it's calm with little swell and slack tide.
