Still crabbing (edit) and clamming

It was just too nice to stay home today so we went out on the river and dropped some crab pots. On the way over to anchor up to cook breakfast while we waited we saw a gentleman and his wife waving at us so we motored over to chat. They were having some motor trouble and had dropped his anchor to keep him clear of the spit. We towed them to Hammond where their trailer was and then went back out to pull their pots for them (they had six keepers).

We pulled our five up at high tide and only had eleven keepers. They were just barely legal as is typical after the pros have been at it a while, but they were hard and heavy.

On the way home with the live crab we saw a volunteer fireman washing trucks at the local fire station so we stopped and gave the crab to them. There were three of them there today and they were happy to get them. The cops are in the same building so I hope they don't get in trouble for having crab caught by someone else and transported alive across land in violation of a couple new Oregon regs.

Well I don't know about my own generosity. That young man holding the crab in the picture was down at the fire hall washing trucks on his day off from his paying job.

I have known him for quite a few years. When his son was about knee high to me we would babysit him once in a while. He showed me a picture of his boy today - he is in uniform somewhere between Kuwait and Iraq. He couldn't tell his dad exactly where.

Yeah - it felt good to give those guys the fresh crab.

And towing the boat - that was kind of fun actually. I hadn't towed anyone very far before so it was a cool thing to do while the pots were soaking. Poor guy wasn't having a great morning. All it cost us was a little gas and an hour of anchor time to cook breakfast.

We got eleven this time, too. Lots of females and little guys in the mix and the keeper males were just barely big enough but they cooked up real tasty

I totaled up the tally chart on the boat and I think we’re done for this season. It was a good one! I would post a picture of the tally sheet but I am afraid Pat and Patty would unfriend me.
