Tom Cat dinnette to berth conversion?

I was just out at the Tom Cat playing around in the cupboards and I decided to try making the dinnette into a berth for the first time. I took the table top off and removed the leg no problem. Now...don't you put the table top between the seats and put the cushion backs down to make a bed? My table top measures 25 3/8 but the distance between the seats is 25". Hummmm... am I doing something wrong or is my table to wide by 3/8th inch?

That is the way the 22 and 25 are. How about the measurement from side to side? Turn the table 90 Degrees? Sounds like you may have to have the table trimmed.
 
Turned 90 degrees would make matters worse. How hard is it to remove the trim without ruining it?
 
On our 25, the table plays no part, rather the 2 floor boards that cover the storage area below the table come up and span the gap!

My table is too wide too...won't fit.... to make into a berth ...my dealer said the previous TC had the same problem...they had to send the table top out to to a shop have it resized...they are doing that as we speak to mine too....its under warranty..one of the last thing they have to do before I can take possession.
I had the Shirley Mae out for spin today...that 1000w shoot though the hull transducer was awsome!! it was still crystal clear at 25ks....the permatrims works great too

My table top fits OK between the seats, but the seatback cushions that go on it to complete the "mattress" are thinner than the seat cushions, so the berth has a valley in the middle...

I hope that they fix this for future owners!

My 25 is the same way but if you drink a couple of Grey Goose martinis before bedtime you never notice.
 
Sounds to me like the factory changed something about the interior details that changed the seat positions slightly, and they still had a stack of table cuttings and upolstery cushions made before the change.

I suppose it's not too surprising that the table top fit between the seats wouldn't be checked by "Quality Control" after completion of the boat and before shipment.

Just a $0.02 blind guess in the dark, I guess!

The trim on the table is put in with staples (like brads) there is no glue or sealer. So you could remove the trim, cut down the side, and then re-install the trim. The trim on the inside of the table would also have to be cut down, and re cut at 45 degrees. You would then re-install the trim properly, by sealing the edge of the plywood, putting a sealant between the teak and the plywood, screwing the trim in place and then putting bungs into the countersunk holes...
Or--just not use the table/bunk.

I'll have to check ours--we have never made it into a bunk so I don't know the dimensions or cushion size.
 
We have an email into our dealer in Oregon City about the problem. I don't want to attempt it myself. We just aren't wood workers. I'm always impressed with everyones handy work on this site. There will be times when we want to use the dinette as a bunk so we will get it trimmed somehow. Thanks for the info. I thought the trim was glued.

My CD25 is basically the same arrangement as the TC255 for the dinnette table/bed. I wanted a longer table by about 6", went to Home Depot, bought a double-sided melamine piece, 24" wide (about $10). I cut it to the length I wanted (slant cut on end like original), removed trim from original table (easy), installed on new, centered on the edges. Looks like factory, gives me that extra few inches needed for 4 people at the table (also extended the seats -- another subject).

The original table fit very tight in between the seats to make the bed. The new piece is about 1/4" narrower (stock), fits perfect! I guess that makes it a 2 for 1, win-win deal!
 
Dora~Jean, that sounds like a very nice mod. Could you post pictures so others may copy your idea? I'm especially interested in how you extended your seating.

Bill will do on the pictures (others have suggested before too), plan to get on board this weekend and clean up some left over projects from before xmas. Going to Catalina next weekend for the annual Avalon Bay dive cleanup.
 
I just measured our table (25" exactly) The space between the seats is 25 `1/4", and the table fits in there. The back cushions are about 1/2" thinner than the seat cushions. I was a little surprised that there was variation between the boats in this area, because you would think that the floor boards would be made to a template. The back cushions do need to be made thicker--, or put a bunch of charts etc under the center cushions to make the bunk usable.
