We just bought a Load Rite single axel, surge brake, disk brake, step
wheel covers (those are really handy as they allow you to board
from the side) with good guide polls for $2700. I was told that was
a special price because we bought the trailer from the broker - a C-Dory
dealer as well. Those are Maryland prices. Galvanized steel. Full
price would probably be closer to $3,000. The trailer is rated
to 3700 lbs, I believe.

A bit lite for many 22 C-D's. 4,000-4,200 very common weight for the 22. We have a single axle on ours, but I'd prefer the dual axle set up if we went down the road a lot.

Actually, it's probably rated at 3,600lbs as that is currently the largest single
axel trailer loadrite lists on their website.

Lets see: 1950+384 (Honda BF90) + 50*6 (gas) + 90 (bats) + (7*20) water gives a wet
weight of 2864. So, I can carry 736 more pounds of stuff in the boat. Mmm,
I guess with a kicker, and 12 more gallons of gas, a radar, etc, you could get
up there. Maybe you could pass 736 lbs.

Twin Honda 40s are 410lbs, so at an increase of 26lbs, that's not going to make
a huge diff.

Also, we have 40 gallons fuel cap., according to the docs that came with the boat.

Anyhow, it's what the C-Dory broker recommended - I'm happy with the choice.

Trailer weight is probably 750 pounds. So, if I loaded the trailer to 3600, I would
end up towing 4350.

This topic comes up repeatedly on this forum and others, in the magazines, etc. As a wannabe, I'm still trying to make sense of all this, including how beefy my tow vehicle needs to be when the time comes.

In the meantime, we've had a 5x8 utility trailer for 6-8 years; very well built locally. In reviewing its load limit this summer, the mfg was very clear that the load limit includes the weight of the trailer itself. He specifically asked if we had bought the (optional) heavier duty axle assembly (no). Turns out we're still OK with the task at hand, so no problem.

If I read your message correctly, you are carrying a load up to the load limit of the trailer, bringing the gross wt.

Anyway, I believe it is the total weight on axle assembly and the tires that is critical. If your axles/tires are rated at 3700 lbs, you are already overloading your rig by almost 700 lbs, or 19% of its stated capacity. This could go even higher without realizing it just by carrying a 'few more items' for the next trip.

As I stated, I am by no means the expert on this topic, but your own description leads to concern, or at the very least, confusion on my part.

Without the mathematical analysis (but YEARS of experience), Sawdust seems to be saying pretty much the same thing.

For the life of me, I can't understand why there should be ANY confusion in the industry over this important issue. But last year I was puzzled to realize how 'slippery' many of the local boat dealers were when I asked these questions. (None we CD dealers.)

I was trying to decipher the GVWR of my Ford Explorer. Then I would be standing in a boat yard, literally, pointing at a boat/trailer rig sitting there waiting to go out the door, and ask: "What does that weigh?" "Well, uh, I'm not quite sure . . . you could look it up in the specs . . . . Of course, it all depends on how you've got it loaded up . . . Some people carry everything but the kitchen sink . . . "

OK, let's assume we have all tanks filled 50%. YOU TELL ME how much a TYPICAL load with batteries, moderate food suppllies, tools, and fishing gear will weigh.

"Well, uh, everyone's different . . . . "

"OK, let's assume we have the tanks half full, two batteries, and TWO HUNDRED POUNDS of personal gear . . "

"Well, I don't really know . . "

"AAARRGHHH" HOW MUCH DOES THAT G--D--- RIG WEIGH?"

"Well, . . . . . "

Yeah, yeah, yeah, America is a litigious society, blah, blah, blah . . .

This is different than the gross vehicle weights, etc. I don't remember the
exact numbers on the trailer, but they are over 4,000lbs.

Anyhow, this trailer comes from a large C-Dory dealer - it is what they put
under their boats and sell to most customers. I'm reasonably sure it
is fine, unless you want a double axel trailer for a specific reason - launching
off beaches or other unimproved ramps, for instance.

Ya know, I am sure sorry I brought up this issue. My intention was to provide information here that would answer some of the most asked questions in many of the e-mails I have received. There are better threads for the discussion of trailers than this...

The advice I have been giving regarding a trailer has been to contact Les. I should have taken my own advice, I guess, before I posted the information above. The places where I checked prices were convenient as they were next to the marina. But I didn't really get into the details -- just asked about prices to offer an estimate for people who were asking...

So, let me try again. For those who may be interested in purchasing my boat and will require a trailer, you should speak with Les. He will be able to not only give you good advice about the trailer, but can also provide far more information on these boats than I ever could. And he may be able to offer specific information on my boat, as she was commissioned at E.Q. So, there you have it -- one stop shopping.

Hello --

Earlier this afternoon I sent a PM to TyBoo expressing the same thoughts. I had been following your thread, and it is often too easy to read a message, push the reply button, and wander off (e.g. into a discussion of trailers). Clearly, this intent of this thread was "For Sale By Owner", and a darned good deal to boot. I wish I were ready to make the leap -- I'd definitely be talking to you.

Anyway, I already asked Mike to review the thread, and to move the trailer messages elsewhere to avoid detracting from the main (FSBO) message. I hope this happens, and to the extent I contributed to the problem, please accept my apologies.
