Trolling with a 90 horse Suzuki

I'm putting my boat in the water this afternoon with my new engine, trim tabs and hydralic steering :D Boy am I excited!

A question for you. Is is OK to do a lot of trolling with the big engine? On the one hand I know people that do it all the time but I hear others say it is silly to put hours on your big engine when the kicker will do the job.

Hi Lee, At the mouth of the Columbia the kicker won't cut it so I'm forced to troll a Johnson 70 for hours on end. I've been doing it for years and never had a problem. If anything, your 'Zuke will perform much better than my old two-stroke. You selected a fine motor!
 
I have the same engine as you. Last summer I trolled with it and it seemed to like it just fine. The only problems I see are being able to go slowly enough when those pesky silvers want a really slow bait. Also with the prop revolving at such low rpm's, you won't have quite the steering control you'd have with a kicker running at higher rpm's.
You're gonna love that hydraulic steering and those trim tabs.

Our Suzuki DF90 does great trolling at low speeds while fishing. You've got nothing to worry about. Love the Suzi!
 
My Suzy 90 trolls from .8 MPH to 36MPH with the 20 pitch prop... love it.

No, I haven't caught anything "trolling" at 36 MPH but I sure enjoy being able to roll it on up there. I HAVE caught lots of Tuna from 6 to 9 MPH though .... ymmv...
 
The only potential problem I could see is if the engine does not get up to temperature/stay up at temperature with long trolling. You might want to put a temp guage on it (I believe that the new Zuki's are NMEA 2000 compatable, and would take a temp guage--I'd have to look into that.)

I personally like to run the kicker for slow trolling--but with the longivity reported on the new Suzukies--they probably will last longer than most of us...
 
Lee - I have a friend who has a Suzuki 90 on a Yar-Craft that was never broke in. He had trouble with it. Make sure you follow the break in period out lined in the owners manual. As for trolling it should do fine. If you plan on fishing lots consider a kicker to rack the hours on. Kickers have some merit as a back up plan should a prop take a hit or the prop gets entangled in line ect... All the new motors are made to run. Use it, run it.....enjoy.
