tying a bow mat or "puddening"

As I mentioned in my photo album earlier, my uncle was a tug boat captain. He passed away a few years ago. My aunt showed me bails of old hemp rope that he had saved in order to tie a bow mat or fender. Unfortunately like most of us it was a project that he never started other than collecting the line.
So that brings me to my question. I want to make a small bow mat for "Plan-B" . I Have always thought that the C-Dory looks like a little tug so the idea came to me to try and weave a mat or puddening. The problem is that I have not had any success in finding any web-sites that will show me hows it actually done. So, are there any old salts out their or good web searchers that can help me.

Head on down to the library and check out The Ashley Book of Knots. I don't know if what you are looking for is in there, but with over 7000 knots pictured, it might be your best chance.

THIS doesn't show how to make one but does show pretty good detail. For only $300, this one could be yours. For that kind of $$, I'd try it on my own!!

This is something I'm interested too and so I checked out Amazon books and came up with Des Pawson's "Knot Craft." The directions for the Bow Fender are shown but frankly they are not clear enough for a novice like me. It does have lots of handy information on simpler things like decorative cording and lanyards Etc. Having lots of rope is absolutley essential for the fenders so you have a good start.

I just looked in my copy of The Ashley Book of Knots and sure enough there are drawings and descriptions of several styles of fenders.
