Verizon global cell phone doesn't work

I have a Galaxy S4 from Verizon that is supposedly global ready... I switched my service to global and paid extra for both phone service and data. We were in Italy. I was able to get it to work ONCE on the whole trip... Later I was told by a good friend who works for Google that Google provides her with a separate phone for Europe because their Verizon phone service is so bad. I have heard that AT&T's global service and T Moble's global service is better. Even the phone's GPS didn't work well (nor did our Garmin GPS with the Italy chip in it). Basically, we carried around a lot of electronics that didn't really work.

Skype and Email on the laptop were the best bet for us. I used to use a small cheap flip phone from mobal which had a UK number. Mobal charged only if you used it... and it worked great.

I can't really say I'm to happy with my Verizon just going into Canada and back. Seemed like a lot of hassle. (Motorola Razor Max) "dumdroid"

I have been fortunate to travel a great deal during my career. I had three mobile phones. Though my US (ATT) and Canadian (Bell) phones worked in Europe they were not the best and could be very expensive if you want to use data. For that reason I had UK phone for Europe. My US phone worked fine in South and Central America. The only place where any phone worked seamlessly and without any issues was Shanghai.

I would really suggest buying a pre-paid phone in the area you are visiting outside USA/Canada. If you have concerns that you may miss incoming calls simply change your answering recording on your home mobile and pick up your messages frequently.

Just suggestions

We have Verizon service using a Motorola phone. when we go into Canada, Judy calls up Verizon, gets the North American plan and off we go. Cant get to the internet, have to wait for a local hotspot and the PC.

The only problem is that it works well, so I have to listen to every phone call from the kids, friends, relatives, you name it. In the past when we were out of the US, we were out of touch, and that was bliss.

When we return, Judy calls up Verizon, we're changed back to our normal plan, etc.

Boris,

That is the way it is supposed to work. My last trip to Canada, I went into the Verizon store, and set up that plan too. When I came back, the story was that I had changed my plan, so had to pick a new one, lost a couple gigs of data and increased my monthly. If I didn't have this stinking contract i would have been out of there in a heartbeat.

Glad it worked well for you.

Same thing happened to us this past year changing back from Canada to normal plan, lost 2 gigs due to plan change. Our contract is up and we are in the house selling process to move full time to Washington so will look at options when we get up there.
