Vessel Name?

I do like Sin Nombre. But I can almost hear the cogitation on "Sin" if one tries to transliterate to English.

Another result of brainstorming that I tend to like, from the book of Psalms: C-lah (selah). I trust more folks would figure that out. I keep trying to use the C, but perhaps I shouldn't. Just Selah.
 
I once heard Bob (Thataway) admit at last years Hontoon Gathering that he considered "Piece of Ship", but that Marie nixed that idea.
Even without the '3 times on the VHF' practice.

I-C Dory, Eye See Dory, Glay-C-er. I have heard "No Name" on the radio. Up north a couple summers ago, I was doing a call for "any C-BRAT". I got an answer, replied with a "move to channel ??" and shortly discovered the guys boat name was some version of "C-BRAT" but he didn't even know what a C-Dory was :lol: (When up in the Broughtons, I would try and make a "C-BRATS" call every day, hoping for a response from someone here).

Pick something that means something to you: geographically, or professionally, or hobby or family related. Because of my work in Sleep Med, I initially thought about using CPAP, but I had some questions about if I did some kind of smear lab tests :shock: :oops: Dropped that one pretty quickly.

You don't have to use the "C", but for many it is part of the C-Dory mystique.

No C in my boat name and it works great. I like that it's a Tlingit word (though I'm on team Eyak), and that may be something that appeals to you in your region.

It refers to a legend where a creature that's half man/half river otter sheds their otter skin and lures the unwitting into the water, causing them to drown, then they don their otter skin and "rescue" the victim by turning them into a Kushtaka too.

I like it because it reflects the draw of the boat, luring me off to the water when I should be doing other things, and keeping me there and being my only means of coming home alive. My boat is my otter skin.

Maybe there are some native words that appeal in that way?

I'll add that the boat came with this name, and being superstitious, did not change it, although we considered it. I'm glad we kept it.

In general I don't like to rename boats or dogs older than two.
 
I wasn't lured into using "C" as part of a clever name because I didn't want to have to explain or spell anything over the radio. Something like C-Mint might be cute, but KISS.

So I went with a simple name that I thought everyone knew. But as soon as I'm 100 miles from saltwater everyone says things like "I love that movie." What? Turns out that there was a 1960's movie starring Don Knots called "Mr. Limpet." I had to watch it. It's a weak plot, sexist, dopey, cold war cartoon about a guy who turns into a fish (not even a limpet). Made me want to change my boat name. Sometimes you just can't win.

Boat names are very personal. They are also fun.
I know many think longer on what to name their boat than their child.
It's a heavy like that.
Sure, consider how it sounds over the VHF. Most don't bother.
The important thing is to make it yours, what you like, and forget
what others think.

I am new to C-Brats but have loved it.
Just committed yesterday to buy a local '13 25 Cruiser. When the wife asked why I want to sell the pontoon and get this boat one of my reasons was "at 70 years old this is the last boat we will need". She felt a classy name for it should be Final'e . So she has a name before we complete the paperwork. :D
 
Couple years back, I thought of that name.

Last minute changed it to "My Last Boat IV".

Jim's Dorie was the original owner of SleepyC's 43 boat in his lifetime. I never got to talk to him about boat names, but I know it didn't come with "43" behind the name. I do know he was retiring and it was going to be his last boat. It was.

It took me about a year to come up with a new, relevant and KISS type name.

The lettering on "SleepyC" is about 8 inches from top of the "S and C" to bottom of the "y", Jim's lettering was about 3 inches tall, in about a 20" half circle.

BBlalock congratulations on the "new" boat--a 13 is a "new boat!" really.

As for the last boat at 70...we have had 3 boats since 70..so never say the "last"

When I retired I thought the SUV i bought would be my "last car"--its been 25 years and 3 cars.. (and a lot more boats)--almost all named "Thataway"
 
Mel, as I said in Death Valley, I love the name. I think Si Sin Nombre would be a fun pun, too.

I wanted the name BUMSQUEAKER but the admiral said no :(


It is derived from English soccer games. Sir Alex Ferguson (then manager of Man Utd) said "it is Squeaky Bum time when the game enters it's final minutes and both teams are pushing hard to win the game". The anus tends to tighten up as the tension mounts.
Now take this to C-Dory world. The engine(s) are screaming as you go flat out at WOT. Now that is 'Squeaky Bum' time :lol:

Martin, I was there once, and it had nothing to do with soccer. It did nave to do with 6 - 8 foot following seas, and coming over top of a wave and seeing a 40+ foot log laying in the trough directly in front of me :shock: :evil: :roll: resulting in a quick sideways ride across the face of the wave, towords the white break beside me :shock: :shock: (we don't have a picture for oh c%@p but it would fit here). I did have a pretty good grip on the helm seat though. :thup :lol: :thup

:love my C-Dory, it surfed and came through fine.
