VHF radio vs. cabin temperature

Radio experts,

My SH GX1255s radio cuts out when the cabin temperature gets above approximately 90 deg. When it cools off the reception returns . Confirmed the problem with a heat gun on a cool day. Could this be caused by the potentiometers in the volume/squelch unit? Any other ideas? I ordered a new potentiometer assy. and will see if it solves the problem. I am not sure of the internals of potentiometers and if temperature could cause such a problem. Perhaps some of you have encountered a similar situation or have knowledge on the subject.

Hi,
I would make sure no critters have moved in and that nothing is blocking air flow to the radio. Maybe give it a blow out with some compressed air. I hate to say this but at the prices of the new ones and the features they offer maybe its time for replacement.

Electronics do not like heat, which is why there is a heat sink built into the unit.

You may need to have a fan moving air across the back of the unit to try to keep temperatuires down.

It is possible--that the pot is a problem, but it is just as likely that there is a bad solder joint and that the heat is causing it to open up. How long has this been going on? SH has excellent tech support. The tech is frequently on "The Hull Truth" electronics forum--and you might see if he comes up there (I think his name was Scott)

I have two SH radios (neither are that specific model)--and my cabin temp is often much higher that 90; no problems. I have owned a number of other radios--and never had that probelm.

rich,
first, you have no business being on the radio when it's 90 degrees out! you should be drinking a very cold beer. now then, if you must be on the radio it should only be used for ordering more cold beer.
hope this clears up any misunderstanding.
best regards
pat

A thermal problem is a bear and takes a lot of trouble to find. Standard Horizon has a lifetime flat rate repair service. E-mail them and see what they say.

I had a problem with a SH that was several years out of warranty and they took it back and repaired it, no charge. I have purchased 2 since and am unlikely to change brand.

I think you might improve your odds of above standard response if you post your problem in the electronics section of THT as Thataway suggests.

There is another way to find "bad solder joints", and that is to get a can of "Freeze Spray" which you can spray on each joint and see if it replicates the problem. Or you can re-solder the entire set of circuit boards.

The best advice is to send the radio to Standard Horizon. I would not be surprised if they don't fix it for little or no charge..

It would be more than my radio that would cut out when the temp gets over 90. :disgust That is not hospitable territory, :amgry and I'd be gone too, until it cools off. 8) :tux When it's that hot, you should be outa the boat and into the water.

The cure Rich, is to move the boat to the Pacific Northwest. :rainbow :note :rose :rose No 90's here on the water :wink
