Voltage regulator Honda 40

Has anyone had problems with the voltage regulator on a Honda 40? Recently my batteries kept running down. The cause was using two different size batteries according to the mechanic. Final cost after getting the part from Honda was $ 551.00. The regulator was $157. I talked to two different dealers and they had never heard of this problem by using two different size batteries.
It seems that the charging rate causes the problem.
Hopefully this is the end of the problem. I now have matching batteries.

I had that problem and the first symptom was the tachometer worked. Intermittently and then quit completely. I was told that a loose ground on the battery cable caused the charging coil to burn out. About the same cost as I remember. Now I tighten batt. connections with a wrench.
