On Saturday we picked up our new 22' cruiser, and we're planning to run it this weekend. It has a wallas stove, which should come in handy. I'm sure this topic has been explored here before, but I thought I'd ask... is it o.k. to run Klean Heat as fuel for the wallas? The C Dory owner's manual says that one should use #1 or #2 diesel, but I seem to recall seeing that folks are using Klean Heat as an alternative. Thanks!
 
My vote goes to Kleen Heat. The name says it all, could have added no stink either!

We've been running Kleen Heat in our Wallas since we bought the boat. And right now, Home Depot has it marked down to $5 per container. During the winter, we've come across it at $8.99 to $12.00, depending on the location. More $$ than diesel, but no sludge and no shelf-life (besides very little smell).
 
I have used #2 Diesel (#1 is very close to Kerosene)--Kleen heat and "liquid candle wax"--the latter has the least odor, but all of the fuels work fine.

I'm in my third year with Kleen Heat. A lot of the objections, as i remember, had to do with price . Anyway, it seem cleaner, odorless, and doesn't seem to deteriorate.

I started using Klean Heat a year ago. It seems to've cleared up a lot of problems I was having with my Wallas, constantly blowing fuses, and failing to start. I think the diesel fuel I was using before was gumming up the innards, making it hard to start after a long period in the barn.
 
We use kerosene from the hardware store, mainly because we hated diesel and Kleen Heat was either unobtainable or too inconvenient to obtain - the hardware store is a block from where I work, Home Depot is 15 miles away. If Kleen Heat is indeed $5 - $6 a gallon at Home Depot now, that would be less than we are paying for the kerosene, but we use so little of it that price is really no big deal.
 
I've used Klean Heat since my heater was new (~2 yrs ago), no problems so far, but have only used maybe 1 1/2 gals (...it doesn't get all that chilly down here...)! I bought 6 gallons at Home Depot at an end-of-season sale. I guess I'm performing my own "shelf life test" -- hope it doesn't cost me big bucks down the road... :|
 
We use Kerosene with no problem and no odor. I'd like to hear what folks are saying about the new low sulfur diesel. I'd guess it would be pretty perfect for the Wallas.
 
I have always used Kero until recently. I had to send the stove up to Scan for a new circuit board, and he said he could tell by the looks of the inside that I was using Kero and I should be using diesel. No argument from me.
 
When I was at the SBS this year I had quite a long talk on this subject with the Wallas dealer. He assured me the new low sulphur diesel was the fuel of choice for the Wallas. I have not switched as I am using the last of the Klean Heat I got from Home Depot. I do think I will give the diesel a try when I am out of the Klean Heat.
 
Diesel. Doesn't smell, costs $3/gallon, and you can buy it on the
water! That's not something that is brought up often, but if I was
cruising and started to run low, I don't know that I would mix Klean Heat
and diesel. So, that would leave me trying to figure out how to run the
tank dry, etc, or finding Klean Heat near a marina.

I've also spoken to Scan Marine and they told me 'diesel'.

But, lots of people run Klean Heat. If the odor bothers you, then I
guess consider Klean Heat. But, otherwise, why run a more
expensive, less obtainable, unrecommended fuel?

I think if you run your Wallas frequently, diesel is fine. I don't, and as a result I've been bit (but thanks to great Brat-friends at Bellingham got it fixed). These fine folk recommended that I use Kleen-Heat and so today I bought 12 gallons at $5 ea from Home Despot. More expensive? Sure, but how much am I going to use, and what price for peace of mind?
