It has finally warmed enough on the southern Chesapeake for the marina to turn on the water again. While washing the boat my neighbor noticed that I use a wash and wax cleaner. He said I am wasting money. I said the carwash drive-thru uses the same type of wax and water beads on the auto afterward. By the way, I use a good carnuba wax a couple times a year. My boat is in the marina and always exposed. Please tell me the wash and wax works.
 
When I wash the boat in the marina I use the Blue Coral vehicle wash/wax concentrate combo. Works for me. The deep wax happens when it's on the trailer and I've got the energy.

The Jenny B is moored directly under the flight path of Lindbergh Field here in San Diego - and about 300 yards from the end of the runway. Lots of nasty particulate, but it appears to wash off the gel coat with little more than a towel. The "nonskid" gets a brush job with the same result.

I'd say it isn't a waste of money at all. What does your neighbor expect you to use? More importantly, does he have a trailerable or is he a condo on the water owner?

For years we have been using MerMaids wash with wax and we wouldn't use anything else. Really helps keep the boat looking great between the two wax jobs each year. I would say keep it up.
 
I have read that carnuba wax is not good for boats. Sun tends to yellow/stain the wax. I dunno ... just what I read. I have been using Aurora products and am very satisfied. http://www.auroramarine.com/

I went to www.auroramarine.com and this is what they say about waxing non-skid!!

"The Non Skid or textured patterns on your deck are designed to provide a non slip surface for you to walk on, even when the deck is wet. These areas are usually reinforced to support your weight without bending or cracking.

These textured areas should not be waxed or polished with conventional waxes and polishes (since this defeats the Non Slip purpose) therefore they have a tendency to collect and hold dirt more readily than the smooth, polished surfaces of your boat. Non Skids require constant cleaning, sometimes daily, in order to keep your boat in Bristol condition and to avoid long term problems such as permanent staining, greying or yellowing."

Is this correct, that you should NOT wax the non-skid on the deck??

I suppose technically that could be true if you were making your non-skid deck slippery. However, there are was products designed for the non-skid deck. I use the woody products. They are not cheap but are worth it. Check out their non-skid wax here:

Unless different non-skid textures have been used on C-Dory over the years, I'll suggest there's little risk in waxing it. The only problem I've encountered, is getting the wax out of the grooves.

The tips of the non-skid are very sharp - I've never noticed it to be slippery after waxing.

I quit waxing the Comfy Dory! I now use a product called Poli Glow which you can investigate through www.poliglow.com. It consists of Poli Ox which is for cleaning heavily oxidized gelcoat like the color stripe. It is then followed up by Poli Prep which cleans all the gelcoat and prepares it for the finish coats of Poli Glow. It is applied with a sponge that has the consistency of a chamois cloth. Simply wipe it on and let it dry. It took me about 4-5 applications to get the sheen that I wanted on our 1995 22' cruiser which was pretty oxidized. I have had many people comment on how new the boat looks.
I used the product back in August and it is still holding up. I will probably apply 1-2 more coats this summer to keep the shine bright. I have not noticed any yellowing or fading at this point. It also is a good finish to clean and I have noticed that very little sticks to it. Price was about $60 for the whole kit.

If you continue on the Aurora site, they do have a product called Sure Step for non-skid (naturally they do!). I have used it and it does work. I have also used it on my floorboards and any area that you don't want to slip on .... from their site .... "Skid-X(TM) Pressure Sensitive Polymer Grips When Weight is Applied (such as the Human Foot - With or Without Footwear) Yet It's Shiny, Protective Barrier is Slick and Resistant to Dirt".

We use carnauba waxes on all but the nonskid. The Non skid gets Woody Wax. When the boat is molded the mold is heavily waxed. Wax is necessary to keep the gel coat sealed. Waxes will gradually wear off.

I have avoided the other products since they tend to build up--look fine for a year or so, then the build up occurs, and eventually have to be stripped and re-applied. The wax is how the gelcoat was "set" and probably one of the best ways to keep it "healthy".
