Washdown Pump

EQ mounted a freshwater washdown system on 3rd Byte. The pump is mounted on the inside of the bulkhead wall roughly under the Wallas. The switch and connection for the coil hose is located in the same relative location, low, on the outside of the bulkhead. Water supply is fed off the factory fresh water tank.
 
Mine was also factory installed but to my specifications. I didn't want a below water line through hull fitting. So I had them place the pump in the port side battery compartment, drill and place the through hull straight through to the upper stern. Then ran the pickup tube down to the water line. The hose is coiled up in the water well and is easily accessible to hose down the stern. If I get the chance, I'll take some pictures and post them on the McNaughty album.

Snoopy-C has a washdown pump. It's intake is just forward of the cabin bulkhead, where the original Furuno fishfinder thru-hull bronze fishfinder transducer originally was. I didn't like the protrusion of the transducer, so replaced it with a transom mount, and then got a bronze thru-hull fitting that mounted right into the transducer hole. It has very little intrusion beneath the hull of the boat. I then plumbed the hose to the starboard lazerette area, when I have a filter and the washdown pump mounted. I have a garden hose bulkhead fitting plumbed out of the lazerette into side of the motor well. Works great. Probably about $200 total cost. Ron
 
Well I finally have my wash down kit ordered. Problem is I do not have a through hull fitting and am not too excited about putting a hole below the water line :shock: Has anyone tried placing the pickup tube down the transom? This would prevent having a big hole where I do not want one. With all the holes I have drilled into my boat you would think Id be comfortable, however, so far they have all been above the water line.
 
Given the quick disconnect hose fittings available on some models, why could one not simply attach an inlet hose when one wanted to use the pump and drape the other end over the transom and into the water?

I remember reading in this forum , about a pick up tube install outside on the transom. Was a nice install, sorry forgot where it was and who it was. There where some pictures. SEA RAM Gary
 
I think I would put the through hull next to where the swim step is mounted and then have a 90 deg fitting to attach the hose with and run the inlet hose down to the bottom leg of the swim step. That way it will be above the water line and the swim step will "hide" most of the installation on the exterior of the boat. I'm pretty sure this is how I'm going to install the one I have on the my boat.

Ray - On the 22 I used a hose over the transom for a pickup. It worked well while sitting still. Then I shortened the hose and slipped it over a length of 3/4" SS tubing held to the motor mount with tyraps. I cut the water end at 45º, faced the short side of the bevel forward with the long side just at the bottom of the transom. That set up really sucked, even at speed. It will help if you mount your pump a hair lower than the highest point of the suction line, I discovered. Also, if you mount the pump any way but sitting flat, make sure the suction inlet is at the lowest point of the run. I mounted my pump horizontally on the side under the gunnel, and with the suction inlet at the bottom, she didn't work so well. I turned it over so the inlet was on top, and still lower than the high point of the hose, and it worked great.

Sometimes thru hulls under the water line are necessary, and if done right there is nothing wrong with them, but unless you are spending several hundred bucks on your pump, the little squirt you get from the hose is not worth a hole in the boat. If I ever get around to putting one on the new boat, it will be as described above.
 
We don't have the 22, but I installed a washdown pump on our TomCat. It does not have a thru hull. I purchased the pump from Boater's World which was a Fojet washdown 3.0 GPM, their item #357400746 for $70 in March of 04. For the water inlet I bought from Home Depot some clear tubing of the proper size and cut it long enough to throw over the side with a screen on the end and a sinker attached with a stainless clamp. Also purchased one of those "curly" type hoses and used those garden quick connect fittings so everything goes together fast. I installed the pump, which comes with a filter, under the gunnel with nylon bolts which I have used before and they never rust. The on switch is right next to the pump. Carry everything in the aft outside locker. I always bleed my fish and then clean up the mess with the pump. It sure beats the old bucket method and I can't tell you how pleased we have been with it.
 
I have my wash down pump (a Shurflo Blaster) installed on the port side of my transom. The intake hose is routed from the pump across the motor well and down the outside of the transom to the bottom of the boat. The hose is secured to the transom with nylon hose holders and SS screws. My switch has been a giant PITA in that the saltwater eats them up like candy. I have resorted, temporarily, to spade connectors when the pump is needed.
I certainly appreciate the tip about keeping the inlet of the pump below the high point of the hose loop. That may solve my intermittent water problem.
The Shurflo pumps are improved over the older ones that seized up in salt water after a week or two.
 
I hung a Shur-flow washdown pump beneath my home made downrigger mount - 3rd photo in the Barrel-o-Monkeys album. Waterproof switch mounted beneath the rigger mount, dunk a short section of garden hose with a brass strainer over the transom when I want to use the pump. No thru-hulls. On a boat, eventually, everything will fail.

Have you had any problems with the pump being in these locations?
I was thinking about putting it in the splash well or maybe under one of the gunnels. Not sure where to put the pump just yet. It showed up today so I can take it out to the boat and tinker with it.
Thanks for the tips on orientation Tyboo and for confirming that the pickup tube will work so I can avoid the through hull fitting. You guys are alright :thup
