What is a guy to do?

:sad Mrs Dee just don't like boating. While salt runs through my veins. I thought if she has all the creature comforts, without huge expenses, she might be happy, but alass it has not happened. Going to the Bahamas with a friend and leaving her with her friend is now the option. Not even an option, that is the way it is going to be. For thirty years she has cruised and lived aboard. She enjoyed being tied to the dock. Anyone out there in C-Brat land have these kind of problems?

Which brings me to another point. If she is retiring from boating (except at home on our little fishing boat. ) My boat of preference would have been a Tom Cat. I like diving and fishing and live aboard while I'm doing it. Plus having the speed to get out 50 to 100 miles and back home the same day. I want out riggers, down riggers and lots of rod holders. A good place to keep beer and wine. :smilep :beer :cocktail . There!!! I have said it and I am glad.

I am going to sell or trade the C-Ranger.
Any buyers or traders out there?

Hi CaptD,

The concern in your post is one that keeps many couples out of boating (or motorcycling, or RVing, or...)... it's a pretty big investment if one half of the couple doesn't like it... and an even tougher psychological barrier to overcome if one chooses to go it alone.

Dr. Bob and I have discussed in the past... having seen couples that start out to cruise together and then find out one of them doesn't like it. Same thing with RVing... or motorcycling. How one deals it with can really change a relationship.

I'm fortunate that the Blonde has hung in there with me through all the motorcycles, airplanes, RVs, and boats... well, more than "hung in," she's been an active participant. I'm generally the instigator, but we have to both be onboard for it to work (part of why we didn't get into hot air ballooning - she wasn't going to be ground crew while I was up there enjoying the view. ).

I guess the key to making it all work is discussing it thoroughly beforehand, working into it together, and then committing. If one part of the couple isn't happy, it's time to change... some can make it work by doing separate activities, others (like us) chose to move on together.

I hope you can make it work so you are both happy. Good luck on a boat swap.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

After four years I now find myself boatless. My son and I owned a 2003 22' C-Dory in which I was able to make a few cruises i.e. Erie Canal, Hudson river, part of Ohio and the St. Johns.

After I had done what I thought was enough I trailered it out to him in San Francisco. The boat really didn't meet his needs and he has since sold it and has gone over to the dark side (25' Catalina).

All of which leads me to the following, is anyone out there interested in having an able-bodied seaman for up to a week cruise? Four years Navy, 30 years fire department and 48 years married have honed me into following most orders. Will pay fuel for boat, all food and overnight stays at marinas. Able to go anywhere in US or Canada. Any interest?

PM me or call 904-612-2983.

Captd,

Yes it's sad, but I'm sure there are many others out there in your same situation. I am. My 'future' wife and I went sailing on a 15ft catamaran at a local lake nearly every summer weekend, she genuinely enjoyed it, fun, cheap entertainment, water was warm (she swims), took an ice chest for a picnic lunch, etc. Then I got a taste of the ocean when I was about 20, that did it, ocean was my love. We bought both sail and power (all trailerable) over the next 20 yrs, she loved them.

Then, on more than a few trips, she got seasick. Didn't really matter what remedy she took beforehand (wrist watch device hadn't come out yet). Her last trip on my now 'luxury liner', kind of like your leap, she didn't get sick, but just didn't like being out there and enjoying the sun, wind, fresh air and water. She now has surrounded herself with so many pets that it has become her excuse to not go (even though we have neighbors begging us to go, they'll take care of them).

So I understand. I take my son or daughter on most trips, or friends, it works, just not as good as having your spouse along to enjoy. I really envy people like Brent and Dixie, Jim and Joan, and the multitude of other couples that have a common interest in boating.

Thanks for sharing, good luck with your sale and next boat.

Yes, every day I thank my lucky stars that Patty is just about as addicted to this C-Dory boating thing as I am...She loves the Sun Deck! Grace Harbor, Desolation Sound, 2005:

beach house and a fast fishing boat is the only solution that comes to my mind. Susan loves most of what I like to do so I am lucky. for the rest she just requires that Iam in bed at night. so no long adventures over night.

Captd - sure sorry to hear about your dilemma.

I have given it some thought of offering my boat as a trade for yours (I do like your boat), but it would not be a straight across trade. You would also have to come up with a sizable chunk of cash, plus your boat for me to give up C-Voyager. :wink

I hope things work out for you.

Good luck.

Thanks Dave, sounds good to me. How much difference? I'm afraid you would want to much.
Would you hold any paper?

Hi CaptD,

Sorry to hear about the defection from the ranks. Toby and I enjoyed meeting the both of you on the St. John's and we could see that you had provided all the comforts on the C-Ranger. Perhaps a short absence will make the heart grow fonder for the boating life.
I was really lucky to get that call at the office last June from Toby. "Honey, I want us to buy a boat!" One of her landscape customers had the boat in a covered lift...not used very much. I locked in the sale the next day without ever having seen the Comfy Dory in person. Toby has really taken to the cruising and camping aspect of this boat and has even gone out with me through the mouths of several inlets. That being said, she does not like to get very far from the inlet and does not like to go out at all if conditions are not "perfect". Consequently, offshore fishing trips will be with my buddies.
We have a 10 day trip planned for the last part of May. We'll launch west of Cocoa on the St. John's if there is enough water in the river or in Lake Harney further down river if not and travel north up to Jax and then back down the ICW to our house on the Indian River on Merritt Island. Weather should still be cool and fishing should also be good.

Best of Luck Captn...Tad

captd - you drive a hard bargin and I don’t want to sound unreasonable, but I would want more than that. However; I will hold some paper if the interest rate is high enough.
