Which engine is best?

I am looking at a couple different engines.

2001 Johnson 35hp 3 cylinder
2001 mercury 30hp 2 cylinder

Am I going to notice a difference between the 2 and 3 cylinder models?
Will the extra 5 hp make a big difference? I think the 35 might weigh 15lbs more.
Anyone have any advice as to which motor is the safer purchase?
Both are from reputable dealers and have been fully serviced.
 
I am making an assumption they are both 2 strokes. If so, I prefer the Johnson as I have had great luck with old school OMC outboards. In fact I had a 1999 30 hp Johnson myself that I sold last summer because I didn't use it much. It performed perfectly.
 
Generally speaking, the more cylinders, the smoother the engine. I think you would notice a real difference between the two and 3 cylinder engine. Just a though.
 
I'd go with the Johnson:

*Bigger motor (probably more displacement, more torque).

*More HP.

*More cylinders, smoother.

*My experience is the 2-stroke OMC engines run forever if taken care of.

NOTE: The 3-cylinder is probably a larger block that can develop up to 50 or more HP with full fuel/air supply and spark timing.
The 35 model is probably a "de-tuned" version to use the block over a wider HP range. (They can't make a separate block/powerhead for each HP model.)
It will have torque much like the larger HP engines on the same block.
It will weigh more, but the CD-14 can handle it!

Seems to me from experience with a lot of different engines is that the OMC puts out a noticeable amount of more power than equivalent 2 strokes, at least in the smaller engines. As stated, the more cylinders, the smoother the engine will run. You will notice that in the lower rpm ranges and while accelerating.
 
The engine will be going on my CD-14. I always liked Johnson and have owned a 25hp 2cyl 2stroke in the past.

Here's the options:

2001 Merc 30hp 2 cyl 2stroke $1550 approx.
power tilt , trim and remote
1 month warranty

2001 Johnson 35hp 3cyl 2 stroke $2300 approx.
warranty until august 2014
power tilt , trim and remote
also includes new cables sized for my boat
trim gauge and tach.

I'm really leaning towards the Johnson but the guy selling the Merc said he would come down a bit if i was ready to buy.

Decisions , decisions!
 
Aha! The rare 14. I'd go with the Johnson, if only for the longer warranty, if the dealer is one who can be trusted! I always wanted to have a big Johnson....there I said it. :oops:

I LOVE your boat! Looks cool!

If it were me I wouldn't spend a whole lot on a two stroke. I would buy the Merc. (if a 4 stoke was totally impossible). Then buy a tiny 2 HP for a mini kicker with the savings.

Boat motors are outrageously priced. Shocking really.

Thanks everyone. I'm thinking the Johnson is the one I'm going with. Only because it's bigger than my old one. Hahaha!

I like the business that's selling it and would have no problem taking I back there for servicing. Seems like a lot of extras in the deal.

The best one is the one that starts and runs every day !
I would be looking for the one thats closest to factory compression spec .
