Wireless speaker

I haven't rushed into installing a stereo system because I tend to prefer the sounds of silence, like osprey calls, bullfrogs, and the breeze. On the other hand I've been out tubing with my son and his 14 year old buddies and some music would have added to the fun. Now I'm reading about the new (for release 5/15) Big Jawbone Jambox. It's a wireless bluetooth speaker that could play iTunes from my iPhone. Set it at the helm when I need some Ride of the Valkyries, set it in the cockpit with some classic rock when I'm sipping champagne with my wife.

Light weight and wireless, with a rechargeable battery (they say 15 hrs worth, count on less). I'm sure it doesn't have the deep down thump that I like in my music but I will be looking into this one. Rarely but occasionally, a beer, a hotdog, and some Led Zeppelin beats the sounds of silence.

You've got some good ideas there Joe.

But, let's make that a Coney Island (Flint-Style) Flint_coney_island.jpg and some Allman Brothers.

Oh baby I'm so there. :smiled

Hey Joe,

We have the original Jawbone, and it works great; puts out more sound than my old ears need. Yes, you can run it with bluetooth off the iPhone. We also use ours with a cord and a really small satellite radio. We use it in the boat, when we're out on the deck at home, sitting outside the RV, etc, etc. The info on it says the battery will go 18 hours, never have tried to extend it that long... but, we've also never exhausted it. It is an easy, wire-free way to have tunes where you want 'em.

We also used it as the speaker for a "speaker phone" cell call during the holidays - better sound than the little iPhone speaker, and 4 of us could be in on the calls.

I was surprised at how much sound that little thing puts out. I would assume the bigger version kicks even more.

Hope that "review" helps.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Oh, and now I want a chili-dog.

Capt. Jim,

That is a great "review." I'm glad you posted it. Helpful to know that the wireless speaker idea is not off base and in fact is an effective music system for the C-Dory. Even better to hear your opinion -- that plenty of sound comes from that little thing.

If I make the purchase I'll write a review of my own.

PS Have fun in the San Juan's. Every place you go, I'd like to go. :thup :smiled

Review of Big Jambox

First, I will reiterate several things that Jim said about the original Jambox which are also true for the new Big Jambox.
Wireless convenience: Move it to the cockpit. Use it in your car. Put it on a picnic table, etc. etc.
Speaker phone: good for several people to be listening/talking.

Pairs easily with iPhone and Apple computer via Bluetooth.
Volume: plenty loud. Easily fills the cabin and/or cockpit with music.
Clarity: excellent. I had some Led Zeppelin cranked up today as I worked on the boat and the Big Jambox handled it well even near max volume.
Sound: very nice balance of treble, bass, and mids. I love bass and that was good but not overpowering. I select "bass boost" on my iPhone.

Cost: Pricey at $300 but since it takes the place of purchasing and installing a stereo system it works for me.

Very happy with this purchase. :thup :thup

Just got a big one! It's an amazing device. Had been listening to Pandora in the iPad and this thing made it so much better. Have paired it with the DroidX too. Highly recommended! :thup

I've had my Big Jambox for a few weeks and it's excellent. No, it doesn't rival the sound quality of my home system, but it definitely rivals most marine stereo systems I've heard, including wired ones.

I love the size. Even though it's named "Big", it's not. It is extremely stable too. I had some moron blast close by me on the river and at one point I felt like I was heeling at a 30 degree angle as his wake passed. The speaker didn't move or tumble from it's place on the dinette table.

Prior to purchase, I was also looking at the Bose SoundLink wireless speaker since it's supposed to have slightly superior sound quality. The feature that sold me on the Big Jambox was the speakerphone capability. I spend 70% of my workday on conference calls and work from the boat occasionally. The speakerphone is a true full duplex speakerphone with specs rivaling some Polycom models with decent echo cancellation.

I've connected it to my iPhone, my work Blackberry, and my Android tablet and it works well for all.

So a big :thup from me.

We bought the Jawbone last September, after our summer in the Tetons. Shopping wasn't easy there, and when we first bought that (at the Verizon store while upgrading Joan's phone), I thought maybe I was just over-anxious. No, it really is a good product, and the small size makes it easy to carry and move around.

Since getting the Jawbone, I've seen it for less on-line. Just a heads-up for anyone who is thinking about adding it to the boat.

It also makes a good "home theater" speaker for our giant 7" TV on the boat.

Best wishes,
Jim

I just bought a Monster ClarityHD Bluetooth Speaker thru Amazon, and put it in the Comfortably Numb last weekend. Like the Jawbone, it plays anything I have set up on my iPhone...music, Pandora radio, YouTube stuff, etc. It's very small with a big sound...only measures something like 5 or 6 inches by about 3 or 4 inches by about 3 inches. Hooks up easily, and has a lithium ion battery I recharge via the included USB cable. It's so small I put it in my briefcase and put it on my desk. The URL for it is:

http://www.amazon.com/Monster-MBL-CLY-S ... 905&sr=8-1

I chose the buying option of getting it from Amazon (not one of the "partner" sellers). About $60. For my intended use, it's great.
