Yamaha on 16' Cruiser

If anyone is running (or had run) the Yamaha F-50 and F-8 (or F-6) on a 16' Cruiser I would be interested in knowing how that worked or didn’t work for you.

This combination is heavier than some others and before I finalize my decision on one brand over another I was hoping to get someone’s experience with this set-up.

Hi Charlie,

I have a 16 Angler with Yam 50 and 8 both 4 strk. Just set boat up but had trouble with room on the transom. Opted for Fixed bracket which puts kicker 3 inches aft and 2 inches up. Have had it on water a couple of times and I think it'll be just fine. I had the 8 on my last boat-a 19 ft Campion-and it was the perfect kicker for the 3500# boat. Think if I were to buy kicker for the 16 Dory, I'd go with a 5 or 6 hp. for size and weight consideration. Should still be plenty of poop for such a light boat.

With that set-up are you having any problem with keeping the bow down?

Do you use a Permatrim or other hydrofoil on the 50?

Interesting note about the need for a bracket.

I run a Yamaha 50 and a Honda short shaft 5 Honda on my 16' Cruiser.
I find so far that the 50 is really all I need. Have had no problems with it. I put the 5 on for fishing. Of the 220 hrs on by 50, 1/2 are trolling. The bracket for the 5 is completely removable except for the frame that is attached to the transom. When I'm cruising I leave the 5 kicker at home. I do run the Permatrim and can't imagine running without it. I do notice the 65 lbs. when the 5 Honda is onboard. I find the 50 Yamaha fuel injected to be a very reliable and versatile engine. Even for trolling.

My sentiments exactly for a 16!

All you need is one good (fuel injected) engine!

Modern fuel injected outboards are so reliable that redundancy is dumb! (And they can troll down for almost anything but trout, and then you can get a trolling plate.)

Someone asked last year if anyone had tried two 30's on a 16!

Just get a bigger boat if you want bigger boat features!

Well, Crabby Lou came with the 1991 Johnson 40 and Johnson 8 already hanging there...but if we were to re-power, we certainly would go with a fuel injected engine, maybe Honda will have one by the time we need to re-power, or according to a lot of reports, the old Johnson 40 will keep going forever! But I really would not feel good too far out with a 17 year old main and no kicker!
