when should a timing belt be changed out on a yamaha f115 Ive heard 500hrs to1000hrs I know you should look at it at 500hrs does it need changing

I have 620 hrs on my f115

Jim,

I've got 520 hours on a F-150 and looked at my timing belt. It looked virtually new, no sign of cracks or wear which is what the service manual tells you to look for. I think a visual inspection is all the manual calls for until you see wear signs. I am not sure about how you check the tension on the belt but there was no regular maintenance check outlined for that.

For autos, the typical timing belt replacement interval is 60k miles or 48 months under severe operating conditions and closer to 100k/84 months under normal conditions. To put that in perspective. 60k miles at an average speed of say 45MPH (equal city and highway driving) is about 1300 hours of use. 100k miles equates to about 2200 hours. I don't know the specific recommendations for the Yamaha but I bet they are within this range and probably closer to the low end. Regardless, you've got some time to wait on this.

well I had it changed at 5yrs and 640 hours .The F-115 is still under warranty until 2/12 so I thought it the prudent thing to do . If the engine wasen't on warranty I might have gone a few more hundred hrs . What the Heck it's only $
