Year my C-Dory built?

Anyone--please tell me how to determine the year my C-D was made--I bought it used in 1981 or '82 but how do I tell the exact year it was built down in Kent, WA. Thanks, Brownbear

There should be a "HIN" (i.e. Hull Identification Number) on the transom in the upper right corner. It will probably start with either "DOR" (builder before ~2000) or "CDO" (builders after ~2000).

There are a few conventions, but from ~1985 on it goes like this:

1) First three letters indicate builder.

2) Next five are hull serial number which usually includes length but exact format varies.

3) Last four have to do with year, and will go "letter-number-number-number." The first of these is the month the build was started, with January being A and December being L. The second is the year it was started. The third and fourth are the model year of the boat. So, for example a HIN ending in J203 would mean a boat started in October of 2002 that is a 2003 model year.

If your boat is pre-1985 then we can go there.

Congrats!

Hmm, I don't know that one. I know of other systems (prior to 1985), but none of them would have had an "S" in that position, I don't think. Basically, one had the same A-L for the build-initiation months but "A" started in August instead of January, and the other had all numbers. Could it be a "5"?

Here is some more info:

Jake, blacken the numbers a bit and give us the whole number. Well figure it out. What year does the title have on it? That should have a readable HIN on it too.

I will confirm it is a s in the am i read this last night at work and just brought up my boat insurance info that had HIN# on it and that is what he had it listed at. at work now but will check it out in the am. I do know it is a 1989 from title.

yup looks like boat insurance miss put hin# they has a S listed it is actually F989.

So looks like june it started and was finished in sept. in 89

any way to find out what number of boat it was for the year??

Digits 4-8 of the HIN should be the boat's "serial number." Oftentimes, digits 4 and 5 are the length/model, and then 6,7, and 8 represent the number of the boat. That said, I don't know if all builders use 6, 7, and 8 in the exact same way. (I'm not sure on this but it's a sense I've gotten.) For example, maybe some builders number all boats they build sequentially (mixing models). That said, for my 22, that three-digit number does makes sense as the boat number, given the time of year it was built (low number, boat was built very early in the year).

Jake-

Those records are unavailable (as far as I know) from the former manufacturer.

However, if you go to the Memberlist (above) and go through all the older/earlier boats and make a list of HIN numbers, then put them in numerical order, you may be able to get a good idea.

My HIN number is DOR22286A787, a CD-22 Cruiser, number 286, started building on January 7th, 1987.

Interesting to note they numbered all the CD-22's together. The Classics, the Cruisers, and the Anglers are one continuous set of numbers, not three separate groups. Thus my boat is the 286th CD-22 built from the very beginning, not 1987.

Let us know what you find out!
