Finally took it to an auto electronics repair shop. turns out the starter solenoid was bad. simple fix. now to figure out why power trim isn't working.

oh I gotcha. That switch does not work either. it's like NO power is getting to the motor. I probably hooked something up wrong when I changed out the battery.

Where is this "switch on motor"?

Wow! I have not inspected the wiring harness. That'll be next. It's very frustrating as the weather here in Florida has gotten perfect for boating.
