    Sandys counterclockwise circumnavigation Vancouver Island

Now for my "real" reply..... Daybreak, you ask about bugs. I hate them too. But they aren't that bad. I used to be a backpacker. Bugs in the mountains are FAR worse than anything I've seen on this trip. There always a few mosquitos, especially at that magic evening time, but usually a few kills...

    Sandys counterclockwise circumnavigation Vancouver Island

Well, I have Internet....sort of...so I can respond. In fact, I think I'll do 2 replies: this one to vent a pet peeve; and then a second one to reply to your comments and to update everyone as to what's happening. My vent.... I had no idea how poor connectivity would be on this trip....even on...

    Sandys counterclockwise circumnavigation Vancouver Island

Made it. I have no schedule, but I was tired of waiting. None the less, I checked conditions this morning to be sure it wasn't still nasty. The wind was essentially non existent, but the seas were confused with a long period 4' swell as a backbone. I could not plane for most of the time. I gave...

    Sandys counterclockwise circumnavigation Vancouver Island

Right on HunkyDory. I was hoping I could sneak out today, but conditions are marginal at best. So I am waiting another day (3 day wait at this point), and plan to leave Winter Harbor tomorrow (Thurs). My plan is to not only round Brooks Peninsula, but to go all the way to Walter's Cove at the...

    Sandys counterclockwise circumnavigation Vancouver Island

Thanks journey on for the insight. I am already seeing the wisdom of your comments as I sit here in Winter Harbor checking PredictWind every couple of hours. This marina is very rustic....not anything like some of the posh marinas on the east side (such as Blind Bay). There ain't no 70 foot...

Jay, your 2nd paragraph is pretty much exactly how I feel. No chance to do any video; I didn't dare let go of the controls.

My favorite marina? Lagoon Cove on East Cracroft Island. Well, today was a big day.....I went over the top of Vancouver Island....aka...Cape Scott. It wasn't easy. During the 8 hour trip, I spent 4 of them working the wheel and the throttle hard every second in chaotic seas and an underlying 4...

    Sandys counterclockwise circumnavigation Vancouver Island

Well, I got up early (OK, earlish :-) yesterday and did the Johnstone Strait thing while the water was flat. Wonderful cruising doing 23 MPH (statue) at 4100 RPM....much like what it feels like to ski fresh powder snow. Then the fog moved in. First time on this trip running blind with the radar...

    Sandys counterclockwise circumnavigation Vancouver Island

Been a while! I knew the internet was spotty up here in Desolation and surrounds, but in truth it is basically non-existent. So I have been unable to access C-Brats. At the moment, I am at Blind Channel Marina....an out-of-the-way marina in northern Desolation Sound. Frankly, I came here, one...

    Sandys counterclockwise circumnavigation Vancouver Island

Well, I finally hit Desolation Sound....the "real" start of the trip. It took me nearly 2 weeks to get here, but that's right on time since I have 10 weeks to do this trip. I did have some boat issues that slowed me down. I had problems with cockpit canvas and the windlass, but I repaired...

Andy and I did connect via some Inreach messages (which is really nice way to touch base since you don't need cell or other signals; Inreach works every where, all the time). Unfortunately, we did not connect in person. Andy was way ahead of me and moving faster. Eventually he had to abort his...

DON'T SEE THE WHOLE TRACK?? I've been asked about this. You have to click on the "View All Tracks" button near the upper right corner to see the whole track (otherwise you only see today's track). P.S. My guess is this is required because I turn the Inreach off at night thus creating what...

Yeah, I never thought of that. The boat was named Anna Leigh when I bought her from C-Brat David McKibben in 2014. I renamed her to a better known passionate woman (if you know your opera ). She is still white with burgundy trim.

    Sandys counterclockwise circumnavigation Vancouver Island

Marco, My experience is about the same as you describe. I haven't hit steep seas yet, but the bow steer is sure there. Also, as you say it's not all bad. The boat is far more loaded than usual, and it seems to have changed from a VW to a Cadillac . At first I was dismayed, but now I'm...

    Sandys counterclockwise circumnavigation Vancouver Island

I hinted in a previous post about an upcoming long trip. Well, I left Guemes Island (just north of Anacortes, WA) at 10am on July 6th. For safety and exploring, I wanted a slow trip....and I'm taking 10 weeks (be back mid September). I am doing the trip solo, so decision making is simple. I've...

    How much rode wil fit

Frankly, I prefer a modest amount of chain. I guess I am a "scope" man. Too light ground tackle ain't going to work, true; but reasonable weight at the end of long scope is my preference. Chain is good, but if it's blowing hard enough to straighten, or mostly straighten, out that chain, there...

Temperature Setting on Seaward Hot Water Heater

I have the same model on my 2005 CD25. There are 2 "thingies" on the front of the unit with wires going to them. One is pretty obviously the heating element (part #73129); the other is the "hi-limit" thermostat part (#74563). It is the thermostat that tells the heater when the water is hot...

PNW 2022, Columbia River and San Juan Islands

There's no getting around it.....you've got to rinse off the windows with fresh water before you clean them. I use a sponge in a bucket of fresh water; splash/smear a bunch of fresh water on the window; remove the water with a squeegee; and finally clean up any water residue with a paper towel...

    MPG on a 25 with a 200 Yamaha

ken35216, I tend to get something like your 2.7 MPG (statue miles) when mixing some hull speed with some planing. I doubt I would ever get close to 3.0, much less over 3.0, if I were mostly planing (BTW, I tend to run 18 to 22 MPH when planing). It may depend a lot on how loaded the boat...
