  1. Fell into gap between two marina floats in Hartley Bay, BC. The bottom leg of the Y was where I just scraped the skin. It "caught" in the center of the scar, and the two arms of the Y are where the skin tore, lifting a full thickness flap down to the bone. The wound was gaping open about an inch, and blood was pouring out. My brother, standing beside me, asked, "do you need a Band-Aid?" This is a month and 1/2 post injury, and it's healing up nice.

Trip Report: Aiviq on the Inside Passage

I'm originally from Anchorage, and now own a house in Seward. When I arrived in Whittier, my dad met me with a pickup to haul the boat off of the ferry. We towed it to Seward for some fishing in Resurrection Bay. The boat is now back in Anchorage in my sisters back yard. My plan is to use it...

Trip Report: Aiviq on the Inside Passage

Part 8: End of the line After shopping and fueling, we continued north out of Ketchikan at 1:00PM. The weather was clear and nice, although there was a slight chop in Clarence Strait. We stopped at Myers Chuck because Chris had read an article about it in Alaska magazine that had really...

Trip Report: Aiviq on the Inside Passage

Part 7: Contraband Orange Sea conditions were ideal crossing Dixon Entrance, but we started to experience propeller cavitation if we tried to exceed about 2,500 RPMs, so we had to proceed at about 8 knots the whole way across. We finally pulled into Foggy bay to examine the prop. It was tight...

Trip Report: Aiviq on the Inside Passage

Part 6: In the dark Chris and I started off again for Prince Rupert. We had been delayed for about 3 ½ hours by my accident, so we weren’t going to make it in before dark. I’ve mentioned that my brother isn’t as helpful as he could be as a lookout, and not to put to fine a point on it...

Trip Report: Aiviq on the Inside Passage

Part 5: Blood on the dock Later that morning I became a bit worried about fuel endurance. We had two 50-gallon tanks that we had filled in Bella Bella, which theoretically gave us a range of about 200 miles. We encountered adverse tidal currents running up Princess Royal Channel, though, and...

Trip Report: Aiviq on the Inside Passage

Part 4: Note to self - Watch out for nets! We continued on to Blunden Harbour for the night, but as we entered Queen Charlotte Strait it was again very rough for the last 10 miles, with waves breaking over the bow, and causing some leaking into the cuddy cabin. On Sunday morning we departed...

Trip Report: Aiviq on the Inside Passage

Part 3: Note to self - Watch out for logs! My brother Chris had planned to join me in Ketchikan when Prakah and the kids departed, and help me bring the boat up to Juneau. When Prakah and the kids left from Nanaimo, I’d arranged with Chris to meet me in Nanaimo instead, and he arrived on...

Trip Report: Aiviq on the Inside Passage

Part 2: A Volvo bites the dust The 24th was a Sunday, and we finally got an early start from Anacortes. We ran up through the San Juan Islands to Bedwell Harbour on South Pender Island, where we cleared Canadian customs. We then continued on North. I hoped to get fuel in Nanaimo, and then...

Trip Report: Aiviq on the Inside Passage

Part 1: Lost and Found I live in Niger, West Africa, a country that was just designated by the U.N. as the poorest on earth, recently beating out Sierra Leone. If any of you watched much (pre-Katrina) news, you’ve probably seen pictures of the place. Generally speaking, seeing pictures of...

    Wood stove fan on wallas

I wondered about that, too. I turn the stove down to medium, but to tell the truth, I've never had it on overnight (mostly because of freakishly good weather on my inside passage trip). I don't know if it could overheat and damage the stove, but I have worried about leaving an open burner...

    Wood stove fan on wallas

Yes, it's an Ecofan. I looked at the three bladed ecofan plus model, but ended up buying the two bladed one because it's smaller and less bulky. The three bladed fan should really move some air up into the v-berth though, if storage isn't an issue on your boat (as if!). They are available...

    Wood stove fan on wallas

I had a Wallas stove installed on Aiviq this summer. So far I've used it mostly for cooking, but a little bit for heating. I had three concerns about it from a heating standpoint. First, the fan was noisier than I expected when the lid was down. Second, I was a bit concerned about increasing...
