02/27 - 03/01 - St. John's River Gathering

They do not take reservations at the marina at Hontoon State Park. There will be enough slips if you get there on Friday. We can "save" a few slips for late arrival.

See you soon....Tom

Loaded the boat today, Friday and then heading south Sunday. Last night it dropped to 29 Degrees below zero and then it got to a balmy 5 above and sunny to day. Snow for tonight. we will finish loading the boat tomorrow. See all Thursday.

Larry,
Glad to see you and your wife bailing on the local weather up there. We won't make the gathering but we wish you and your safe travels. Enjoy!

Looking forward to attending on my little (16') C-Dory which I keep on Tampa Bay. Should be fun. This will be my first C-Dory event and the first time I try to sleep on this littlest of the C-Dory family.

Left VA in lovely minus three degrees, trailered to the intersection of the ICW and St Johns. Launched there yesterday, then overnighted at Metro Park Marina. Headed south on the St Johns, presently anchored in Black Creek at n 30 4.988 w 81 46.835. Lovely weather and water.

Nice to see our northern neighbors escaping the weather! Welcome to "Sometimes Sunny Florida"! Perfect day today....sunny and 81 degrees with just a very light wind. Joyce and I have been busy preparing for everyone's arrival. But we did have time to take our 1960 Cessna for a flight. We wanted to see where James and Hank led us to De Leon Springs and back. We then thought it would be fun to take a couple photos of the Hontoon Marina. So here is the first photo.

And the second.....

Lots of room at the marina now. The only boat there now is the Blue Days but by Thursday there will be lots of C-Brats.

Be on "72"

Jim...Sorry you will not be able to join us this year. Just keep us in mind for next year. I've received a couple of other regrets and totally understand how life gets complicated.

Take care.....Tom

Mary and I are still planning to drive over for the potluck (Saturday?). (Tom, I'll try calling you this AM.)

We won't be bringing "Dessert 1st" this time, just driving over. We will plan to ride the SP ferry over to the island and then talk someone into giving us a ride back after the potluck.

Nice aerial pic's by the way!

Best,
Casey&Mary

Many thanks to Tom and Joyce, Becky and Bill, and all who made the gathering such a fun experience.

Skimmer's crew hated to leave 80s in FL and return to 30s and snow in the forecast here in VA.

Next year we'll plan to stay south longer and continue to explore the wonderful St Johns.

Ahoy.....
The "Second Annual St. Johns River C-Brat Gathering" is now history. Yes...we had 21 "Cute" C-Dorys at Hontoon Island State Park. They ranged in size from 16' to 25' with a couple of 24' Tomcats. We also had three C-Dory owners who could not bring their boats for one reason or another. A nicer group of people cannot be found anywhere! I honestly cannot think of anyone who did not sign up for a duty at the gathering. THANKS!

The weather was not as nice as last year but everyone took it in stride. The C-Dory showed that it is a boat for ALL weather! What a story to tell at future gatherings about getting out of the cool wind and dining in the park museum, where the signs all said "NO EATING OR DRINKING", for our Friday meal! The park manager Ken and park naturalist Christine with the rest of the staff went out all out for our group of C-Brats. Christine took those that were interested on a nature walk and showed us many of the unique plants and animals on the island. She also introduced us to "ELVIS"......you'll have to come to the next gathering to find out who he is and what makes him special! Special thanks to our own Bill and Becky Smith on the Blue Days who were dock volunteers at Hontoon. Bill spent DAYS removing aquatic growth by the docks and getting them ready for us.

Hontoon State Park is the only Florida State Park that does NOT charge an admission fee. They only have a small budget from the state. Donations are needed to fund improvements at the park. This year the group collectively gave $416 in gifts to the park that I know of. All money in excess of costs for the food and supplies for the gathering that was given in the donation can went to the park. There were also individual gifts and a 50/50 raffle. Ken Torres the park manager gave all of us a big thanks! I've been told that we are the best group that come there...Be Proud!

Many folks went cruising daily, some only once, some started days or weeks before the gathering. On Monday five boats headed north and a bunch went south. Some are still traveling now and may not leave the St. Johns for weeks. Anytime my wife and I put the Out2C on the St. Johns river we feel like we are at home. Our special C-Brat family is scattered for now, but we reunite again next March 4,5,6 2016 at Hontoon Island. If you could not make it this year....please plan to join us next year.

PS...I saw that there is a St.Johns Gathering 2015 photo folder. If you have photos to share please post them there for all to enjoy.....Thanks

Let me add my thanks to Tom and Joyce for a well run event. Perfect weather - any warmer and the bugs would have eaten us.

Thanks, also for the soap. I stole Lou's soap and gave it to my fiancee.

See you next year.

Jury duty called the day I got back hence the delay. Many, many thanks to Tom and Joyce and all that attended. We get to know you a little better every year which just enhances the experience. Looking forward to next year.

Did not have a camera with us but once I get Betty to slow down long enough for me to get the pics off her phone I will post them.

Ya'll have a great year with lots of boating......

Our friend Joan's "Outrageous Cookie Bars" were such a hit at the gathering pot-luck, that we wanted to share her recipe:

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1 can (14oz) sweetened condensed milk
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chip morsels
1 cup flaked coconut
1 cup chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt butter in a 13x9 inch baking pan in the oven. Sprinkle graham cracker crumbs over butter. Stir well, press onto bottom of pan. Pour sweetened condensed milk evenly over crumbs. Sprinkle with morsels, coconut, and nuts; press down firmly. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until light golden brown. Cool completely in pan on wire rack. Cut into bars.

ENJOY!!

Left the good camera at home this year. What pics we have are posted in our album. Had a great 3 weeks and am considering volunteering at the park next year. Kudos again to Tom and Joyce without whom none of this would be possible. Hey Tom....did you mention to anybody that the park is having music during out gathering next year? Let's be clear that I had nothing to do with that, lol.

Best to all, James

St Johns River 2/27/2015 - 3/1/2015

The old Arkansas Cotton Choppers want to thank Tom and Joyce for hosting the Hontoon Island Gathering. The cookout around a campfire smoke mixed with hamburgers on the grill and conversations with boat owners oh ho yea "it don't get no better than this".

We have been to many C-Dory events but this one tops them all with a unique verity offered on the St Johns River, endless tropical plants, countless navigable canals to explore, and of course THE MANATEES at paradise resorts of Blue Springs and De Leoln Springs where one can almost touch one of these amazing animals.

Brenda and I docked in Jacksonville, FL. and wanted "Falcon" to taste salt in the Atlantic but after two days, too cold and our time was up, disappointed we pointed the bow up river, south.

Thanks You, Tom and Joyce We enjoyed every minute!
