02/28 - 03/02 - St. John's River

Planning a C-Brat get together at Hontoon Island State park on the St. John's River in Florida. Hontoon park has 40 slips with electricity and water. Price per night is $18 plus tax. Has showers. Great bargain. We are keeping this informal so you can arrive anytime. Some of the plans are a cruise Saturday on the St John's and connecting Hontoon River. A stop at Blue Spring State Park is right on that route. A pot luck dinner is planned for Saturday night. The park has picnic tables and grills along with a small supplies store. Hiking and a small museum are on the grounds.

Sunday is open for a cruise to nearby river restaurants, fishing or just hanging out and sharing the C-Dory experience.

We plan to arrive at Hontoon on Friday, Feb. 28th and leave Monday, Mar 3rd. A good boat ramp is located at Ed Stone Park at the Hwy 44 bridge over the St John's .

We already have a few C-Dorys planning to join in. Help us prepare by telling us if you plan on coming. We'd love to see you there for one day, two days or stay the 3 nights if you can.

Since we live nearby we would like to join up as day trips putting in at Ed Stone Park then cruising the short way down to Hontoon Island. I will put it on my calendar. You may want to consider joining the Daytona Beach Boat Club. Great group of people and they run a cruise once a month. Thanks for posting this get together.

Tom and Joyce,

We are planning to be on the St. Johns in February and will schedule ourselves to be at Hoontoon State Park on the 28th. See you then.

This sounds so fun, and it's an area I would like to cruise. Very cool that you are making it a get-together :thup

Since my boat is still in the Powell area, and since I think I would like to get to the PNW next summer, I had pretty much talked myself out of going to Florida this winter. I've also ordered enough parts to take me well past February in installing them  (Hello windlass...)

But darn.... so tempting!

Stan....we will looking forward to seeing you this time. I trust the weather will be nice. Was a bit wet last fall at Hontoon! The boat club sounds nice but we usually boat durning the week. Lots of our weekends are full of other activities.

Rich and Judy...glad you will be able to make it also. Joyce and I love the St. John's river. If you PM me I'll get you our cell number. If you need anything down this way let us know. We winter in Florida and summer in Wisconsin. Only a 40 mile drive for us to the St. John's.

Sunbeam...It's hard to do everything. But glad we tempted you!

You folks ought to ask the nerds to put this on the events calendar, might get a lot more action. Used to live in JAX, back in the mid 70's, wish we were closer, we'd be there.

It will be nice to meet you in person as well. Same goes for me. Let me know if you need something. We could always stop at the store prior to launching.

Charlie....wish I knew how to make an announcement for this get together.
But I think the C-brats from around the area will pick up on this. Wish you were closer. Best to you.

Clif... I plan on contacting every one the week before and see when everyone is planing to arrive. It will be fun to see everyone's boats. Looks like 2 16's, 2 25's and my 22 so far. Sure to be more to come! Can't wait to see the Ocklawaha Queen.

The St Johns river is our favorite boating venue. This year will be our 4th visit. We have been planning to leave 2/10 and be in Florida for a month or more, but we have received a disturbing setback this week. I am having an issue with one of my eyes. We hope to have this resolved soon and will do our best to be there. Believe me I am ready to leave this winter behind.
The Hontoon Island area is a beautiful one, I encourage everyone to attend if they can. You will not regret it.
I'll see you there with my brights on!

Look for C-Way to show up. We launch at ramp in Astor and cruise the St Johns several times a year, anchoring out overnight. (19 years on camping-out equipped pontoon boat, C-Dory past year). But we will try docking this one time to meet and be with everyone there. If it is at a FL state park the cost should be 1/2 for FL seniors. Would you expect dockage reservations to be necessary?

Bruce...We trust your eye issue will be quickly resolved. Looked at your photos and you have a lot of nice modifications. C-dorys are truly a canvas! The only problem I have is that I tend to spend lots of bucks after getting ideas. Keep us informed and hope to see you on the St. John's.

Tom and Marlyn....we already had you down. Would not be a trip without you. Can't wait to see your new camper back. Seems the last trip cost you more money than me. Hope we can get Casey and Mary to stop out for a bit.

Roy and Dixie...glad you'll be able to hang out with us! I am going to take the boat out Tuesday and stop at Hontoon and see what they have to say about reservations. Yes...Florida residents over 65 are 1/2 price.....I think with tax last year it came to $10.25 per night. I am not 65 yet so I pay the big bucks. BTW there is no requirement to stay overnight at the park for the get together...you can anchor out. But as you said sometimes its nice to hang with the group. Looking forward to meeting you.

The Carpy album can be quite "dangerous" (in a good way, of course ). The Carpy logs of their cruising in the St. John's area have added that to my list too :thup

I already can't wait for the trip reports!

A couple months ago I saw Carpy's helm seat mod that allows the seatback to lay full down, thus allowing it to become an extension of the galley counter. I could not later remember whose pictures I had viewed to see that mod. Today I was glancing at pix of the boats responding to this thread and there it was. I have raised both helm and forward facing seats 4" to allow better fwd visibility while underway, but this would still allow a flat working surface. I hope to have mine done before 28Feb.

Nerds, please make it happen!

Tom, that's how you make it happen. Just pray to the nerd gods. And put a buck or two in the tip jar once in awhile!!

Now we'll see how many sign up for it.

Charlie

Yes.... And I sent TyBoo a PM asking him to help. This is such a great web site and the C-brat people the best! 6 possible 7 so far. I'm going to take the Out2C down to Hontoon tomorrow and talk with the rangers there. Yes.....I could phone but it's more fun this way. :wink

Actually, I think Tyboo (Mike Barber) is in Las Vegas, the last time I heard from him (on FB), getting married! Hope I didn't let the :cat out of the bag Mike!

He may have done it but he may have also been "busy"....The other Nerd is Bill Giese and he's usually very responsive too...

Tom,
I wondered about how long it would take to go from Astor to Sanford by boat? Depending on the weather we might put in at Astor on the 24th. We might see you on Friday but we are leaving for home on Saturday or early Sunday at the latest.
