04/11 - 04/12 - Cathlamet, WA

C-Dawg, good to hear we will have a second on Friday. We will, I expect spend some time on the hook and also some time in motion. We may try bouncing cut plugs in the correct tidal situation and may settle in with a beer in one hand as the day rolls by. We are not set up to depart from the hook should some blind low IQ and sick springer find our hooks in its jaw, so we will seek a less crowded area.
Also, I have no background on the river and do not like the prospect of helping to locate new gravel bars while fishing. Scratch, bump, there is one now. Mark that down.

If you don't have one, motor on down to the nearist sporting goods store and buy a fishing map, they're handy.

gravel bars bad, wing dams much worse and at high tide are not often visable.

I'll probably be throwing the boat in the water on friday.
Dinner at the River Rat Tap Tavern friday night would be a good thing

Sorry to hear that Ken (put in Friday), but may be up for dinner.
Given the tide as predicted below, how would you fish this area?

tides are one thing & what kind of water they're dumping out of the dam is another, you just never know what the current is going to be doing. I'd just stick my bow out there and see, if there is enough of an ebb to make a kwickfish work then I'm dropping the hook someplace away from the crowd. If the current is going the wrong way then it's troller derby time....I don't do a whole lot of river fishing though, a few trips in the spring and a few in the fall so my $0.02 may be worth...about $0.01

that river rat joint looks like hell and nearly ready to fall over but is a cool place an worth the stop for you earlybirds...and next door is the harware store, worth looking through there also. Boh of those places are an easy walk from the port

Toni and I will be putting in Thursday and will probably try for fish on Friday but we are not good at fishing the river... just good at trying to fish the river. Look forward to seeing everyone.

Russ and Toni,
I called the marina and told them I would be in a night early. They would like to know how many for that first night but said to just check in upon arrival. Looks like the tide on Friday calls for heading out at first light.
See you out there.

Looking for C-Dory in Alaska with owner financing. Will put money down, monthly payments up to $500. and carry full replacement insurance. Thanks.

All the reports I've been seeing are from around I-5 area. Haven't even heard much about the Kalama area, let alone Cathlamet.

My plan is to tie up to a wing dam on the north side of Tenasillahe Island and set out some Kwikies for a couple hours (while the Commodore is still snoozin'), then I'll drag some headless herring around for a few hours in Clifton Channel.

C-dawg, we will see you out there. If your commodore was not intending sleep, how would you fish that morning tide? First mate Kathleen (and as she points out, owner) will not be joining me until Sat evening and in her place will be fishing friend Pat. We have never fished the river but are set up both with the kwikfish's and herring. We have the drop weight rig parts and have some of the small divers some use to get down 20'-30'in current. I also have downriggers which will come along but may stay in the truck, if the goal is to present within 1'-2' of the bottom.
We refuse to use C-4 but are we overlooking any gear one should have on hand?

Unfortunately, I will be unable to make this trip this year. I hope you guys do well with the fishing. Besides the fishing, I know you'll have a great time visiting (and eating) at the dock.

Have fun! Catch one for me.

Just a reminder the pot luck on Saturday night as we do have the patio reserved for our gathering.

We are thinking of bringing potato salad (not just any potato salad, but genuine Resers from Costco in the big tub!) and strawberry shortcake fixin's (also Costco). Cutting up and sugaring up the berries is the extent of our cooking expertise. We'll try not to get them as sugary as last time.

Our plan is to leave home port right after low water and get there about noon on Friday. The boat is washed, waxed, gassed, watered, Wallas fueled, freshly bottom painted, and already afloat in our slip. Jamie and I gave it a test run last night and both motors run strong. I have Thursday and Friday off, and the kids are skipping school Friday. Who knows - if the water is nice Thursday evening we might even go after the orthodontist appointments and get there before dark Thursday night.

We'll be easy to spot. Three kids, two dogs and one poor old grandpa.

Toni and I will be there Thursday afternoon. We don't know if we will fish but we are bringing poles. Its been a long winter and we are anxious to get on the water and see old friends and meet new ones.

Hi Cathlamet folks,
Roger and I will be there Thursday night....planning to bring a ham to go with your potato salad. By the way, are we all going out to eat Friday night and having a potluck Saturday...or is the other way around.

We may have our Portland family with us part days....hope to do some fishing.
InCahoots....Roger and Cheryl Juntunen

Due to family plans Cathy and I will be driving down for a visit with everyone Saturday sometime and bring something for the potluck.

I received this advice from a local fishing forum:

I would just zig-zag down through Clifton, run back up and do it again. Look for a big Northriver with Radar and two nets in the rocket launchers that says "Sidewinder Cherters" on it and follow his lead. Sidewinder is probably the best guide on the lower Columbia and I guarantee he will be trolling Clifton Channel.
So once the Commodore gets her not-needed beauty rest, I'll be trolling the channel. I'm going to brine some herring tonight with Brine-n-Brite to run plug cut on a 6' leader. The dropper for the weight will be about 12".

If you look at a chart of Clifton Channel, you'll see a trench about 30' deep at the lower end. There's an old cannery there. That is where most people troll, I believe. I think that's our best shot at getting bit. Troll downhill, run back up and do it again.

By the way, there's an article on trolling for Columbia springers in the latest Salmon Trout Steelheader magazine.

It appears that we may have some sprinkles - but that's not unusual this time of the year. Glad that we have some coverage for Saturday! :thup Maybe we can pray that we have one of the last minute clearings that no one predicted and have some sun. :thup :hot = :smiled
Anyhow, looking forward to having a few days of fun on the boat enjoying everyones company!

arrg, I spent most of last weekend cleaning and waxing the boat, thus, the rain....unfortantly the freshly waxed boat is going to have to stay parked at home. The M-in-law is going into to OHSU this morning for a four day visit while they rummage around in her brain....probably should stick around for that. We'll try to make the potluck & I may try to sneek down for a bit after work friday. This will be the first Caheterlamett show we've missed.

Catch lots of fish, have fun
