OK, but don't give up on the smelt yet. This is some wine like M has never had. Can't buy it in a store.

I have been looking at CW's pics and he seems a little younger and stouter than us. Should we forego the traditional beating-the-crap-out-of-beer-can-boaters-at-a-CD-dock just this one time? I don't think M would let us drink enough to get that tough. Now if Larry and Lyle show up to help.....

Tuff....you think CW is tuff? You're right!!!

He teaches middle school!!!

Hey, it's not so much about penetrating the aluminum hull as it is swinging ahead enough for the generous lead required of a nimble jetsled.... and that would be plenty in a very zig, zag random fashion. Remember, I was trained as an Infantryman to move under direct fire.

I fished the mouth of the Kalama today for winter steelhead. Not a bite. The river was very calm, the sun peeked through. Nice day all the same. There were quite few harbor seals at the mouth of the Cowlitz... I'm guessing they've found smelt. C.W.

While at the round table late Saturday night at the SBSCBGT this Cathlamet gathering in mid May came up. Some asked about possibly boating to Portland, OR as a day trip activity. I shared that it was a long way from my house to Portland, let alone all the way from Cathlamet. How far? Well I dug out my Evergreen Pacific River Cruising Atlas and, using the back of my Leatherman tool to measure, and rounding the varying scales for each page in the chart book to the approximate 1 statute mile per 1.25" of map I came up with the following (but realize I normally calculate distances on charts while bobbing up and down in sloppy water in dim light with bleary, sleep deprived eyes, so my figures are probably off since this was done at home in the den, clean, dry and comfortable):

Cathlamet to Kalama: 36.8 miles upriver/east

Kalama to the the Multanomah Channel & mouth of Lewis River 15.2 mi. upriver/south (possible Spring Chinook boundary line)

Mouth of Lewis/Multanomah channel to Portland or I-5 (most likely Spring chinook legal boundary) is 19 miles upriver

or going West/downriver from Cathlamet to awesome sturgeon fishing grounds just upstream of the Megler Astoria Bridge is 22 miles.

I'm sure sturgeon are catchable closer to Cathlamet, I just don't know that water. C.W.

I'll give um a call and let them know we're coming. They usually save a chunk of dock for us, individual reservations are not needed....do me a favor, it seems that the road kill around the old Trojan plant has a bit of extra zing to it, keep an eye out for some good chunks for the Saturday night BBQ :)

OK folks, we have an official C-Dory chunk of dock set aside for us. All you need to do is square up with the port when you arrive. Again, we have the BBQ facility reserved for a Saturday evening dinner. For those that will be there Friday night, I think a trip to the newly reopened River Rat bar for dinner would be in order.....that's that big old shack that was about to fall into the river over by the work boat dock, the harbor master said they have fixed it up and it's kind of funky.

I've been kind of half heartedly looking for a small bluegrass band that will work for beer, and a couple of bucks, to provide some fine dinning music....anybody know of anybody or has a strong dislike of music?

Oh dear, I haven't signed up but I think I want to go- don't worry, just show up and bring some extra fenders for rafting :)

HOW DID YOU KNOW? actually the place was know as that decaying, falling down old joint down by the river. M and I walked by there last year and marveled that it was still standing. It is a old joint by the water front that at one time had a roller skateing rink upstairs. The harbor master said some folks bought the joint and have been doing some fixing....come on down and check it out

The wife and I are going to be there. I think we'll enjoy a nice three day break. We might let in in our normal spot and power out there. In any case this is going to be our first C-brat gathering and we are both looking forward to meeting more of the brats. See you then!

we may have to pass the hat and take up a collection to pay Mike not to sing :)

bshillam, glad you'll make the trip, these gatherings are a good way to add to your list of boat projects and Brats are like old friends that you've yet to meet. These things are usually a loosely organized good time....except when Mike starts singing

Cell phone pic yesterday from the top of the hill on the Oregon side, but, yep, that's Cathlamet over there.

quit fiddling with that cell phone and pay attention to the road :) how about this weather?

hey you TC owners, I look forward to seeing one of those actually in the water......

I'm offering a cash bounty to the person that can convince the spouse we really need a TC :)

Dave,

I just rambled through your construction photos of the bartender. What a great looking boat. Old George Calkins would be proud. I am looking forward to seeing your boat at Cathlamet.

No. It's their 70GA, a 2.2 L Mazda gas engine with a ZF25A 1.00 : 1.50 tranny; fresh water cooling and wet exhaust. Puts out about 65 hp at 3500 rpm. Cruise is about 18 knots at 2800 rpm; I think it will get about 7 nm/gallon at that speed. Don't know for sure yet. Engine only has 12 hours on it.

Here's a link for more info: http://www.westerbeke.com/products/gas_ ... cfm?eng=35

I keep this thing out in Hammond, probably somewhere near Tyboo.

The 16' "Natural Blue" would probably be there as well, with kiddies and tiki drinks in tow.

Finished my long anchoring system late last year, and had a good trial run on the Columbia for sturgeon in November. Can't wait to get out again, even at $3.50 per gallon...

Keep us posted.

Is this thing still on?

I just got off the phone with Stone Wolf Vineyards and ordered my contribution to the potluck. Something really special is in the works. There is this exquisite desert wine they make that is only available at the winery. They are sending me some. Any luck at all and there will be some left by the time April gets here. (Thanks Wineman Art - sorry you guys can't make it this year).
