04/27 - 04/29 - Upper Cumberland River Cruise

Looks like 4 boats making Nashville Thursday night, 3 boats pulling 11-noonish on Sunday, 3 boats up river till Tuesday.

Still room for more...and I will go ahead and make dock reservations after this weekend for the Thursday night dock in Nashville to allow for others to still join us over the weekend, but in time to ensure we have dockage too and get our dock slips mailed to me.

hi "brydman"
looks like things are shaping up. we're looking forward to arriving on thursday, noonish. would like to join in on the cruise to nashville.
will be pulling the boat on sunday, mid-afternoon.
best regards
pat

Thanks CPT Pat! I'll get our dock reservations made mid-week as to allow others to hop on the site a bit if they had been out on the river or something all weekend.

congrats on the sea school 6/pac. class. they're a well known, well thought of company. you're in for a real treat!
pat
ps. just keep the check book out, seems like those hidden expenses kept rearing their ugly head. first aid, cpr, final exam fee, apca membership fee, uscg mandates random drug testing membership, eye exam, blood pressure test, add the usps membership fee, boat us fee, and of course you'll need that captains hat! oh well, the price we pay for education!

Thanks Pat for the funding heads up...but have kinda heard about it. Kinda sorta like our military pay system...they give ya $100...and take back $99.... Why do I think I should be marching when I typed that?

I have been practicing for the drug test for about a month now...and can hit the bottle with about 95% accuracy now....up from the start of 75%...and the mop handle up side the head from Sherryl... :embarrased

Hopefully there is some kind of 30 day window on some of the physical stuff due to be getting the entire over 40 physical to include the poke-n-jump exam  :thup :cry :moon on the 10th of April.... and if not.... no big deal...just pay and continue moving down the line.

byrdman,
practice makes perfect. you hang in there, a couple more wacks from sherryl's mog handle and you'll be right in gear.
hey, just had an ideal, are there any wine drinkers joining this party? if so, perhaps a wine tasting evening would be in order. each could bring a bottle of their favorite band, some cheese and crackers, smoked salmon, or whatever.
best regards
pat

capt. pat,
we usually keep a bottle or two of wine on the boat :D :cocktail we are by no stretch of the imagination "conesures", but enjoy the wine. sound as though we could have some cheese, ect. and enjoy!!! we ain't to formal :D

hey brats,
i will throw this scedule out for a critique so we can carve it into shape :D
looks as though wed, and thursday are nashville days and old hickory lock is opperational 7 days a week.
cordell hull dam is by "appointment only" and appointments must be made 24 hours prior to lockage, or a lock scedule as to locking up and down must be submitted 24 hours in advance.
friday evening we will get to bledsoe (17miles from lone branch launch ramp) saturday morning leave bledsoe for a 63 mile ride to cordell hull dam, arriving at the dam 4pm-ish. lock thru (apx. 45 min.), be able to have supper at defeated creek marina.
now, would a sunday, 8am, or later, lockage for those going back down work? or do we have a 8am sunday and an 8 am monday? we will have a 9am tuesday lockage as well, but i want to stay on good terms with my lockmaster :D

Thanks Brother! Appreciate the help with the locks.
Thursday we will need one at Old Hickory around 4pm, Friday morning around 9am...putting us back at the ramp around noonish Friday.

I know there are a few of us who will need to lock back thru at Cordell in time as to arrive at Lone Branch around noon. Please make us the lock reservations, and just tell us when to be there. We will keep you in good graces with the lockmasters.

Be out of the net a few days.. Montgomery Wed/Thur, Savannah GA Fri/Sat, getting back home late...Sat night. Will check back in on Monday...and will then work on our Thursday night dock reservations for Nashville City Dock.

Really looking forward to this.

ok brother 8)
you guys going to nashville talk directly to the lockmaster using the normal locking proceedure. you will call "old hickory lock" on ch. 16 and the lockmaster will move you to his working channel "14". you will inform him you have have "X" number of boats wanting to lock downstream (and they really LIKE breavity. no B/S). before you get to the dam, look at the river chart and sort out where in the lock everyone is going to go (which bolllard) as there are four bollards on either side of the lock. i usually contact the lockmaster about 1/2 click out from the "AP" (arrivall point) found on your chart.
coming upstream i contact the lockmaster when i 'round the bend and have the dam in sight :D
noon which day? that is for a downstream lockage from cordell hull? if it is sunday, how fast can ya'll run an 80 mile jaunt to lone branch? GYPSY can do that run @ an average speed of 25 mph in 3 1/2 hrs. :hot :smiled  but that is gittin' it!!!! gimme sommor input from the brats.

Not sure if we will make it back to the launch site by noon, but hopefully by mid-afternoon. We would like to be able to go through the cordell hull lock downstream as soon as they open on Sunday morning....7am or 8am.

The "Falcon" has been repaired and a test run made on Lake Clairborne near the repair dealer in Ruston, LA.

Brenda and I are looking forward to seeing Nashville on Thursday, April 26 and the Cumberland River. Cruising with experienced boaters and being with people who enjoy their C-Dory boats.

We plan to launch at Lone Branch before noon on Thursday in preparation for our cruise down river to the over night tour of downtown Nashville.

Byrdman, we are flexible so our scheduling can be changed to coincide with others.

Brother Mike: Please email me the info/POCs of the Nashville City Dock. Looking thru my files I can only find the info on the Clarksville City Dock...?

On the lockage coming back down on Sunday morning...Cordell Hull, as we lock thru on Saturday going up...let's give them a heads up that we will need an early lock thru going back down river for about 3-4 boats, about 15 minutes after they are open for business....and have had a chance to get that 1st cup of coffee down... I do not want to get there and request a lockage as they are making that 1st pot... but we will need an early down river lockage... as to not have to run that 25 speed the hole way back down.

Today sunrise was around 633am with nautical sunrise about an hour earlier.... and I do not think we will want/need to leave before day break. The days are getting longer as we near our gathering dates...but I am not sure if the approximate 2 minutes a day are early morning or evening hours or a split between the two. Hummm

Even up river, there are some wide parts with wind in certain directions.....the chop would be too ruff to maintain that 25 mph speed...and the 9 mph range may also be needed for short distances. But then again...once thru the locks...those that want the hard run can make it..... or...it could be smooth as glass....

All about business at the locks I realize.

gypsy and freebyrd,
good april 1st day to the both of you!
always want to keep the little woman happy, so thought i'd ask about shower facilities during our cruise?
will we be anchoring for the evenings or staying at marinas and, if marinas, what's the prospect of showers?
thanks
pat

Along with Mr. Campbell, I too need to find out some details for my wife.

What meals will we be eating out? Dinner on Friday and Saturday night only?

Assuming we will be in a marina on Friday and Saturday night (not sure about this) do they have electric hook-ups?

Thanks. We are really looking forward to this.

Rob

Yielding to Brother Mike due to his knowledge of the docks and their facilities. Fri & Sat nights dinners at the marinas I think..?

We can shower prior to our Nashville down river journey on Thursday, prior to our up river on Friday, and upon our return to Lone Branch on Sunday at my Mothers house. We will go past her house on the water enroute up and back down river. This all worked out fine during our Thanksgiving gathering.

Friday & Saturday night showers and power questions .... breakfast availability at docks?? Step in here Brother Mike...and you may want to include plans for post Sunday on up river portion of the trip too please.

For those of us going into Nashville Thursday night...many choices for dinner that night, with a total nights walking of about 1 mile...between several establishments...or cab if needed, and a great little local place up the hill ....via cab ride up and back for a great breakfast Friday morning. Will get them to hold the little back room area for our crowd Friday morning, like we did on our Thanksgiving cruise. Works out great... but... we need to be prepaired for our own coffee set ups 1st thing Friday morning. I can bring an extra 12 cup coffee maker and power is on the dock!!

:D we are approaching the last of april, the time for the Upper Cumberland Cruise!!!
1) cordell hull lock is run by one man named pat lampley. we must let pat know 24 hours in advance (friday before noon) what the week-end lockage scedule will be. we need this information so if we want to lock upstream saturday evening, and sunday, lock downstream at 6 a.m. or 9a.m. or times in between, so pat will know what time to show up for work. there is no "open for business" time as pat works for us. our scedule is effected by other boater's requests as well, we ain't the only ones out there  sooooo, if we get our request in first, the others hinge on our locking times.
2) showers...wouldn't count on one upstream of bledsoe creek marina.
3) meals are a lock-in at bledsoe 8) just need to know how the brats want to handle that :D
A) have a planned meal at a given time:for instance...filets, shrimp, baked potatoe and a salad bar :D
B)order from the menu to include special requests (three day notice, please)
C) i must talk to allen at defeated creek and see if he can accomodate us if we are after hours getting in. just a precaution :D
i will be getting a packet together with this info for the cruise and will be monitoring this post for questions or requests :D :beer :cocktail reminder  THE UPPER CUMBERLAND IS PRIMITIVE :thup

Friday night steak-n-shrimp sound great to me at Bledsoe. I guess they always would have some grilled chicken too?

Saturday evening/night at Defeated Creek... We will need to get there in time for those of us heading back down stream to re-fuel before dinner…so we may need to let him know we will have at this time 7 boats that will need to take on fuel. I only have 18 gallon tank so I will for sure need to top off. I think everyone else carries much more fuel, and more than likely would be able to make the 170 mile loop without refueling…or not. Each needs to figure their own. So, for our group, we are looking at about 140-150 gallons of fuel.,,,figuring we all top off prior to departing Lone Branch, or..going further up river..where things are a bit primitive.

Saturday Night Dinner @ Defeated Creek. The Cheeseburgers were AWESOME only better on our last up river run gathering.... We got there unannounced and late. The kitchen had closed and the help/chief had left for the day. The wonderful sweet lady there said she would stay and cook for us, re-open the grill...but she could cook cheeseburgers or cheeseburgers...either one. I, along with every one else chose the cheeseburger and loved it. I think we all did. Do recall some salads too…maybe?…or not.

Mike, please call in a down stream lockage 715am for Sunday morning at Cordell Hull. That would give us a 630ish wake up. Reheat coffee made the night before quickly, toss lines at 650ish, arrive in lock area and prep our boats for the lockage around 710ish, for us to lock back down stream Sunday morning at 715. That would give us about 80 miles to Lone Branch, in about 4.75 hours, or an average rate of travel down river of about 16.8 mph… which would allow us for slowing for bad chop in places… If we get there a bit early..big deal…we had a smoother ride!!

Again, those pulling out Sunday, we can arrange for a stop at Mom’s for showers just prior to getting to Lone Branch… for those that want a shower prior to hitting the road back home. Two showers….IN DOORS!!!! With hot water too!!! And…that nice piece of ceramic we all miss so much when out on the waters too!!…again… IN DOORS!!

DOWN TOWN NASHVILLE DOCK RESERVATIONS: $1.00 a foot, plus $8 if you choose to plug into shore power. I need to pre-pay for the boats (4 of us at this time) going down to Nashville Thursday night/Friday morning. Who wants power?
