05/04 - 05/05 - Lopez Opening Day 2007

Launching at Oak Harbor and going up Swinomish Channel is an option if the wind/tide matrix is ugly from Cornet Bay. That would put you 1/2hr-45min closer to Swinomish Channel, but...Oak Harbor is a shallow ramp and you need a moderately high tide to avoid wetting the tow vehicle too much. Friday has a minus tide at about 1PM so I would recommend launching at Oak Harbor NLT 10AM if you choose to go that way. C-Cakes will be watching weather closely and probably won't make a decision until late Thursday/early Friday.

Thanks for the local knowledge C-dancer. It is much appreciated. Another question to you knowledgable folks.
Seeing as how being further north is a good idea for getting across Rosario and because we're coming from the north through Bellingham, would anyone know if that be a good spot to launch?

Les, Thanks. If you get the smell of bacon and eggs coming from your parking lot you will know what happened !!! Hope you can make it to Lopez. Could offer you a ride out there but not coming back for 2 weeks..

Hmmm...wonder if they'd miss me here?

Bellingham is a GREAT place to launch...Squalicum Harbor has a multi-lane launch and lots of parking (over-flow lot is across the street). Down around the south end of Lummi, over the top of Cypress, this is a great way to go.

Les,
After all the flak you got about taking forever.... all in the name of Quality. Yeah, they would miss you, or at least you would never hear the last of it.
Pity you don't have one of those "Novi" boats to try out this weekend, then we could go whenever... and not have to woryy about waves.
We are going to be on your patch about 0900 tomorrow morning, throw the boat in the water and get the rig back home. Then we might leave anytime after we have put the dogs in the kennel.
This is supposed to be fun......right???

Pat,
Thanks so much for the info. I though you'd already be heading for California sun and wedding by now.

Out the door at 5:30 a.m. tomorrow morning, and no guarantee of sun in San Francisco!

Ron asked,
Can someone explain to a newbie to boating in the San Juans how going up the Swinomish channel from Coronet bay can help avoid a nasty Rosario crossing? Don't you still have to cross Rosario at the top to get to Lopez?
Ron

Ron,

Peter's answer is correct.

Another reason is that you can be closer in time to slack current in Rosario. The slack is at 2:35pm, changing to flood(water moving north). If the wind stays the same, then that would be a good time to cross Rosario.

When the wind and current are going the same way, the waves lengthen and smooth out. Whenever strong wind blows across water, it makes waves. So if the wind is blowing, we get waves. The opposing current is what can make those waves steep, possibly dangerous, and at the least, uncomfortable. When the wind and current are going the same way, the waves lengthen and smooth out.

Edmonds update: Carl ("Sarge", on Gigi) and my crew (aboard Two Lucky Fish) plan to leave Edmonds around 07:30, rather than 08:30.

Forecast is shaping up for a reasonably pleasant morning, becoming worse as the day progresses. If it still looks good as we approach the "turn off" for Swinomish Channel, we'll continue up to Cornet Bay and meet up with the other C-Brats there. If it's turned yucky, we'll use the channel. We'll be on VHF 68.

Meanwhile, as for IMPORTANT issues: Two Lucky Fish will provide a batch of delicious homemade Tollhouse cookies for the potluck. The butter's sitting on the counter, coming up to room temperature, as we speak.

Kingfisher is also on "plan b" and we intend to leave at "00"Dark for either Cornet bay or Oak Harbor. Splash and go. Probably head for Swinomish unless it looks really good as there will be a 7.2 Kt ebb at Deception which might just be meeting whatever wind from the West. Plenty of time anyway unless you want to get to Lopez on a minus tide.

Will have our ears open on 16/68

Merv & Kathy

C-Cakes will launch at Cornet Bay at around 10AM and, if the present forecast holds, will go out through Deception Pass. See you there.

Still have not made my mind up as to where I am going to launch tomorrow morning. Would like to launch at Cornet Bay with the rest of the Brats but may end up at Anacortes if the wind is kicking up and head up around Cypress and cross the channel. Sure would like to try for some Halibut or lings. I picked up 5 dozen oysters in the shell this afternoon for steaming on Saturday, will bring tabasco and butter. All a guy will need is a cold beer to wash them down. I have no moorage reserved at Lopez, Hopefully, I can tie up to someone at Friday night.

I have decided to play hooky this weekend. So susan and i will be launching from twin bridges ramp after all. We wont be getting there to early so if any one else is heading out around 12 noon look us up. we will be on vhf 68.

Les if you are watching this dont look for susan to launch out of the pass tomorrow. We would run from there but with the wind out of the west and a out going tide from noon on not to mention the changing weather, i will take the easy way out.

We will get to Twin Bridges late afternoon tomorrow. If it's still light out and not too windy we'll launch and head for Anacortes and tie up at Cap Sante on Friday night. We always go to the Rockfish Grill in Anacortes for drinks and dinner.

Is anybody else going to land in Anacortes on Friday night? If so, let us know.

We want to go shrimping on Saturday. We don't have coordinates, but are still going to give it a try. Anybody else going to be out watching pots?
Lyle

Lyle,

Contact me on 68 around 6:15AM on Sat. we'll be well on our way to Jones to drop pots - I think Peter (C-Dancer) will be joining us. We WILL have limits by 2PM (fingers crossed).

Roger

Traveler is parked at the curb at Skyline Marina and will be in the water by 10:00 am and pointed toward Lopez shortly after. We will hail on 68 when we are under way.

Good Morning Everyone,

Been loading R-Matey for the past couple of days. So excited that we couldn't sleep last night. Will be launching from Bellingham about 6 am. See you all at Lopez.

Getting my son Dominic and I ready this morning for our 0730 launch...

If anyone going is still checking the board, it's just my 5 year old and myself and I'm very new to the boat so any help in docking when at Lopez Islander would be very appreciated. Look for 'Gigi' and start fendering your boat up :smilep

See you at Lopez,

-Sarge/Carl
