05/04 - 05/11 - Lake Powell

Most any time around then is OK with Gismo. I just need to know where and when. Hopefully there will be some experienced cruisers to show me the way. This is my first time at Lake Powell. I'll be driving from North Tahoe so i'll needed to know where to launch and when to meet up. Thanks.
 
Any dates would work for me...the Friday through Friday is the important thing for me.
Steve...I think the best place to launch is Wahweap...more services available there. Also the town of Page, Az nearby for everything you might need...provisions etc. The other ramps on the lake might be better for those coming in from other states...but are a little iffy with the low water levels. Wahweap being the main ramp...they keep it functional. From Tahoe...I think I would go down the back side of the mountains and over through Las Vegas and St George into Wahweap.

How about the Friday after the Delta Cruise ??? it would give some of us a chance to get to both events...

I am about to give up on that Florida thing..... I don't think I want to spend all that time alone with the dog.... she might bite me...

Seabran - the last week end in April and first two weeks in May are good for me. I am keeping my 22 in dry storage at at Antelope Point Marina, so I will launch from there. It is usually less crowded than Wahweep and is a newer facility farther up lake. But I can meet you all anywhere.
 
Joel...I don't think Roxy wants to be on Powell on Memorial Day weekend. If we waited until after the Delta Cruise we would be into Memorial Day. So it probably should be before the Delta Cruise. That way we can avoid the PWC crowd.
 
I was at Lake Powell last Sept. and the Antelope marina has exploded. It looks like a nice place and saves several miles of bouncing through the narrow canyon to get to the open water. It is alway rough if there is any boat traffic - the wakes just reflect from side to side.

Two years ago we launched at the Indian ramp that was just opened next to the antelope ramp (which did not reach the water then). I don't know if they are part of the same marina but it was a good deal then. We got our boats ready, climbed aboard and they drove our rig down the ramp and unhooked us. When we returned we called them and they brought the trailer down and we drove on, hooked up and they drove us up to the top.

These ramps are just a few miles east of Page - not really any further than Waweap.

Do you have any current info on Antelope marina?

We plan to get to Lake Powell this year but will not be able to do it in the spring. I'm just too leery of spring snowstorms crossing the mountains to get there. I've been snowed on in April, May and June too often. we hope to do it this fall. We hope it comes off well for those of you able to get there in the spring.

Steve - I was at Lake Powell for a week last summer and launched out of Antelope Point. They have the ramp that is part of the marina, but they also have another ramp operated by the National Park Service. It is public just like Wahweep, and you can leave your car and trailer in their lot for two weeks. The marina is nice, but it is set up mostly for big houseboats. They have gas and a small store and overnight slips, but the restaurant was not open last year and there is no lodging on shore.

I like it because it is newer, less crowded and puts you an hour closer to the best cruising/camping areas. I keep my 22 there now because it is only $38/month on the trailer and they will launch it for $15 round trip.
 
Chris...I guess it too early to set things as definite. But the way I'm reading this....is that we will launch together at Wahweap or Antelop Point on Friday May 4th and plan 7 days taking out on Friday May 11th. Meet up the day before maybe afternoon. Launch Friday morning.
This works for me but I'm flexable. TIA

I´m intimately familiar with Rocky Mountian spring snowstorms, having lived in Utah for 50 years, and would not want to trailer through a storm on I80 in WY or I70 in CO. However, as a newcomer to the PNW I was wondering how much of the potential snow you would avoid by taking I5 South from WA and then heading east to Powell in SoCal? Would be longer, of course, but would it be a more certain trip in terms of snow and ice?

Warren...you might avoid some snow...if there is any. You still have a few passes to go over..most are only about 4000 feet or so...but many are much further south so they don't see as much snow as others to the north. Just drove from San Diego to Seattle and back for the boat show and didn't see a single snowflake on I-5. And that was during January. The highest pass on the most southerly route would be in the Flagstaff area. Usually don't see much snow in May...could happen...but usually not enough to stop a trip. Wouldn't let it keep me from Lake Powell in the spring!
 
I think some of the Lake Powell discussion may have been lost when the server went down. We are interested in the timing, as are Brent and Dixie on Discovery. April? May? Thought I'd bring this thread back to the top so we can try to plan.

My understanding was that we had hammered it down to May 4-11. That is what I am planning on (at this time.)

gismo is flexable, but 4-11 works for us. We are planning for that time.
We will be there what ever date you deside...
 
I look forward to watching this thread. April is not good for me but I look forward to a summer trip to Powell and hearing of all your adventures there.

We would have loved to do Lake Powell with everyone, but it appears to be in conflict with the Delta cruise. Guess we'll have to try for the fall dates. I sure wouldn't rec. the Memorial Day time frame. It's a zoo down there then.
 
I agree.... also I need to be North early May.......so if I go it will be in April.

I have not towed my boat further than Seattle to Seiku for some fishing with my Tacoma. I hear alot of talk about Mountains and road conditions. I just purchased a Trailblazer SS with 395HP with the towing package which will give me 400 ft-lb of torque. If I remember correctly it's towing capacity is 8500lbs. So would that kind of setup be comfortable for a long trip like this? How long would it take to tow my boat from Seattle to Lake Powell? Ever since I saw a magazine laying out Lake Powell, it's been on my mind to make a trip out there.
 
Way to keep those priorities straight Brent and Dixie, yeah! Can't wait for the Delta trip -- oops, sorry, didn't mean to highjack this thread... :oops:
