05/04 - 05/11 - Lake Powell

We have moved from the "maybe" stage to the "gonna be there". Joan and I are missing our Discovery buddies and anxious to get back to some cruising. Wild Blue has been seeing almost daily local water outings since we returned and is looking forward to the wonders of Lake Powell.

My West Coast chart card for the Raymarine had good detail for Lake Tahoe, I don't recall if that was true for Lake Powell. Anyone know?

I have a chart card for my Lowrance which displays in good detail many western lakes including Lake Tahoe. It doesn't include Lake Powell. If I want to include Lake Powell I have to purchase there up graded chart card call Hot Spots Pro. From comparing the available lakes on both cards, the only lake not on the one I have is Powell. I guess that's how they get ya. Now I'll have two of every lake in the western US... lakes I'll never see, except Lake Powell.... :x
 
Why some lakes have no electronic charts available.

Just as a point of interest to some, I'll offer a passing word of explanation why I think some lakes are not included on electronic charts:

I think one of the reasons resevoirs, at least, are often not included among the electronic charts, is that their shape and navigability change greatly with rising and falling water levels, even with islands appearing and disappearing in the process.

Consequently, VFR (Visual Flight Reference, as used in flight navigation) is the rule, with contour maps of the lake bottom being the most useful reference other than the simple full resevoir map itself.

Fortunately, the smaller nature of most resevoirs makes visual referemce possible. Really big ones, like Lake Powell, present more of a challenge.
The contour map would be an invaluable tool in such circumstances.

To effectively electronically maps such resevoirs, the chartplotter would have to integrate a lake contour map with a lake level input to calculate the current shape of the lake, etc,

I like to photograph lake structures a low water levels for future reference, particularly those with fishing potential.

Does anyone have an electronic chart of Lake Powell? Does it allow for water level differences?

Lake Powell is included on the Navionics Hot Maps Premium West CF Card for the C & E Raymarine chartplotters. The coverage has lake bottom contours with depth lines. Allowing for the current 100' plus, lower than full pool lake level, you still have to watch very closely for obstructions. The chart coverage is quite good over most of the lake. Up some narrow side canyons the plotter occasionally has you out of the water. I think Garmin also has coverage of Lake Powell. Bill & El could give more info on Garmin maps.

Kind of like the converse of "walking on water"......our C-Dorys "cruise on land"..........talk about utilitarian! :wink

Since my TC is set up for PNW cruising, will I have problems with ventitlation and/or bugs in early May at Lake Powell?

We have not had any significant problems with bugs at LP.

Gizmo Steve said we would have perfect weather so that is what I am expecting! I think it is too early to tell but it could be anything from 60s to 80s. The best bet is to go to weather.com and look at the weather for Page, Az the week before.

If it does get a little warm in the boat just put a chair in the water in the shade next to your boat and read a good book. The water will still be cool.

For those of us going early: Only one more weekend to get ready! :D

Sure hope the weather is good for our trip. Recently day time temps have ranged from 59 to 80. Don't mind the lower temps but don't want that nasty wind.

I have checked the trailer and am getting the boat ready.

We won't be there until May 4th, but we are really looking forward to seeing you guys and being on the Lake again. We haven't been there since last fall. It is such a beautiful place and you can't help but enjoy it. We've been having fairly stormy weather the past few weeks so it should be good for the first part of May (that's my weather forcasting ability--you know, it can't stay crummy forever). Just be cautious about the "big" water if it is windy. There are lots of good places it hole up and wait out the wind. We are planning on furnishing fish dinner for everyone one night--hope the fishing is good. See you all soon at Wahweep.

For those arriving on May 4th will you be heading out on the lake that day or the 5th?

I would like to try to be in the Padre Bay/Gunsight Butte area to meet up. There is a good possibility that we could connect by VHF in that area. I think it is about 20 miles from the dam.

Maybe we could select a CH such as 68 and set some times to try to connect.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

We've left the Tropical Tip and are on our way! We plan to launch at Wahweap and will be looking forward to meeting up.

It's 220 miles from our place to the Wahweap marina. We should arrive early enough to get launched and find a place close by for the night. Maybe the Lone Rock area. We won't make it to Padre Bay until the 5th.

Your welcome to stop at our place in Richfield on the 3rd, and we could travel on to Wahweap together on the 4th. We have 4.25 acres and plenty of room for you to park. That's if your coming from the north and plan to go south on highway 89 to the lake. It's about a 5 or 6 hour drive from Richfield to Wahweap, including a lunch stop. PM us if your interested and I'll give you directions.

Gismo will be departing Tahoe on the 29th for Lake Powell. HWY 95 to LV and on to LP. I am looking forward to hooking up with the Dorys. See you there.

Really looking forward to seeing you two again! We're in Phoenix right now, visiting with our daughter and son-in-law. We intend to be there by the 3rd and will get a slip at Wahweap and will be looking for you.
