05/11 - 05/14 - OFFICIAL 2023 Friday Harbor CBGT

I'm in need of a recommended Marine Atlas or group of charts I can use as a backup to get from Anacortes to Friday Harbor, and then to Nanaimo through to the PLI. I'll need these if I get separated from the group. My trusty Garmin Chartplotter (3206) was obsoleted by the factory, so I'm unable to find a reliable source for an SD card supplement that covers that area (the preloaded map cuts off half of Nelson Island near Garden Bay). Prudence, of course, dictates to always have backup charts.

In two weeks, Rosanne and I will be towing C-Traveler out to California for the Delta Cruise. Afterwards, Rosanne will have to fly back home for work, and I'll head north for the Friday Harbor gathering. For those that don't know, or have forgot, I hope you will indulge in my coloring book! I've already picked out some new pages to color at the Delta Cruise, the Friday Harbor gathering, and then for the Chatterbox Falls group. From the title page of my coloring book:

I won this book in a silent auction at the 2016 C-Brats St. Johns River gathering. While I’m not really into adult coloring, this seemed like a great opportunity to have something to remember the great times and new friendships made or old ones rekindled during various C-Brat gatherings, be they formal official gatherings, or informal meetings on the water (or land for that matter) at other times.
I ask that you take part in this endeavor by coloring in some detail of a picture, and adding your name and boat name to the item you colored in. If by chance you are joining in the gathering without a boat, please be a part of this anyway even if you don’t have a boat name to add.
Once you are finished, please pass it on to the boat or person next to you. Each gathering or event has a page/picture assigned to it below.
Thanks so much for your participation in this event and for coloring in the book. And BTW, no excuses about not being able to stay in the lines, lol. I can’t either…
Before the end of the gathering, please insure this book finds its way back to me. Thanks!
Sincerely,
Colby Smith / Midnight Flyer C-Traveler

Friday Harbor Saturday Events

9am … Coast Guard Auxiliary inspections
If you pass, you will receive your 2023 Coast Guard Inspection sticker.
Inspections take about 10-15 minutes.
If you are not signed up yet, contact Gary/DayBreak ASAP.

2pm … Book Exchange & Travel Stories, Party Barge
We all have travel guides, boating books and even local fiction stories from our adventures. Instead of collecting dust on your bookshelves, bring them and swap them for new ones. Share travel stories with other C-Brats. Any left over books will be donated to the Friday Harbor Free Stuff Shack.

5pm … Potluck, Party Barge
Bring your own plates, utensils, and a dish to share. Somehow we always end up with a wide variety of food, so pull out your favorite recipes.

After Potluck … Boat Christenings
Hopefully MC’ed by Pat Anderson

I talked to Michael Millison today, general manager of the NMI factory, and he confirmed that he and his delightful wife Alana will be attending and supporting the event as they did last year, including sponsoring the party barge.

Great. I think it was Michael that showed Harvey, my wife and I around the factory last summer. Good guy and good tour! Colby

We just sold "Life of Riley" but want to come visit with you all, as we have enjoyed 5 different C-Dory boats over the last 25 years and leaving boating life, so we will be bringing lots of stories but no boat this year. Looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. Al and Karen Baensch

We are just a couple of weeks away from our Friday Harbor gathering. I am getting a lot of PMs asking if it is too late to sign up. It is not too late. The deadline of April 1 was a soft deadline to be able to give the Port some hard numbers on what to expect for slip assignment. This annual event is a lot of fun and we don’t want anyone to miss out.

I am getting requests from first timers to the San Juan’s with a desire to travel as a group to FH and leaving from Anacortes. Any volunteers out there that would be willing to coordinate a group departure from Anacortes? We plan to launch out of Sequim this year. I know there are people who plan to leave from Anacortes with overnight stay at Eagle Harbor, Cypress Island. Anyone willing to volunteer to organize a group crossing? Launch information could be shared via PM if we had a volunteer.

Thank you. See you all soon. Gary and Colleen

Hello All,
We are planning on joining the Friday Harbor Gathering and will be leaving from Anacortes. We have had our boat for 3 years and have traveled many lakes and rivers, but this will be our time in salt water. Would be awesome if there was someone we could meet in Anacortes and maybe follow over to Friday Harbor? We have both GPS and Radar, and think we are ready to make the trip, would just love some experience nearby.
Thank you in advance, please PM Howtam on the Rising Sun.

I'm planning to leave Cap Sante for Eagle Harbor sometime Wednesday morning, and then Eagle Harbor for Friday Harbor sometime Thursday morning. Anyone that would like is welcome to follow me over. I just don't have exact times yet. Anyone that hasn't heard about Nebo yet, it's a nice little app you can download to your smart phone, and locate others. I'm registered as C-Traveler. I'll also be transmitting AIS when I'm moving. (I turn it off while anchored or docked.)

Colby, that would work well for us.
We can meet you at Cap Sante Marina at any time you decide on.
I will download the app and contact you there.
Thanks for the invite.
Howard & Tami (Rising Sun)

Thanks Howard and Tami for posting. Hope it works out for you to travel with Colby. You will be safe with him. He is a very accomplished Captain and a nice guy.

Colby, I have many PMs with interest in an Anacortes crossing. Thanks for talking the lead. You may end up with quite a following. :thup :D Gary

I think I better get there early on Tuesday to have room to park my rig after I launch. lol And we may have to raft on the mooring balls. Is that allowed? (How many accomplished captains ask that? )

Good, you know the answer. No rafting on the mooring balls. It I OK to anchor but it is discouraged to protect the eel grass. That is why the mooring is free. If you arrive by 2 pm, you should be fine. The Island has so many places to hike. Enjoy.

Colby, thanks for the tip on Nebo. I downloaded it, seems to be a good app for finding those in your group (as long as we have cell coverage that is). I see that I'm at "anchor" in my side yard. Hint, you have to start & stop a voyage (only once) to get your boat to appear.

And Martin, thanks for your local knowledge on the Strait Of Georgia. That sounds much more reasonable on the regular sea state. Much like our Catalina crossing down here. There are nasty days, but that isn't the norm.

Ran into Patrick and Kim this afternoon and was reminded about the gathering. Any chance there is still room for Launa and I on the dock?

Cya there!

Hi Steve and Launa. Yes there is room. Send PM with requested information from page 1 to DayBreak and we will get you on the spreadsheet.

Glad you can make it. Gary and Colleen
