There's a possibility my wife and I may pop in for a day. We're still doing some planning around her vacation schedule, and a desire to visit my brother in Graham, Wa. We're hoping to get some cruising in around the islands, but with a limited amount of time, doesn't allow us to spend it all in one place. Colby

Well now. It looks like this is on the board at Friday Harbor so . . . .
Gary, Might need to ask the Admin guys, for a signup sheet for this one too.

2022 Friday Harbor Signup Now Available!

To sign up for this event:
  • (1) Click this link: http://www.c-brats.com/groupcp.php?g=11667&sid= ... OR ... Click “Event Signups” (menu bar at the top of the main C-Brats page), then under “Join a Group”, find the “Friday Harbor” event and click on 'View Information”.
  • (2) On the event page, click “Join Group” to put your name on the list
In a few months we will contact you to gather more information for the final signup. This information helps in four ways:
  • discount price from the Port if we submit enough signups
  • the Port will assign an entire block of adjacent slips
  • facilitate the Coast Guard Auxiliary safety inspections (if desired)
  • create a list for all of us to help match people to boats
Feel free to PM the following information to us when you sign up for the event, or as soon as you determine your arrival & departure dates. If we don’t have this info by April 1, we will be PMing you.
  • Vessel Name & Length
  • Captain / Co-Captain Name(s)
  • Additional Passenger Name(s)
  • Arrival Date
  • Departure Date
  • Safety Inspection Requested
We look forward to seeing everyone May 12-14 in Friday Harbor!

Gary and Colleen

I had a call today from Teddy G, the coordinator of the USCG Aux that did the safety inspections last year. He and his group are willing, (and Planning) on doing them again for the FH-CBGT group again. I sent his contact info to Gary (DayBreak) and they will get together to facilitate getting those inspections done. Just my feeling, but I think everyone should avail themselves of that opportunity. The price is right, the learning is free, the sticker could save you getting an opportunity to have the active duty USCG stop by some day when it is less opportunistic from you viewpoint, and IF you have some hang-up during the inspection, there is no fine or adverse consequence. The inspector will tell you what is needed, show you, and in some cases even help get into the proper condition.

Gary, thanks for starting this thread and getting us motorvated to sign up and visualize three days--or more--in May. Gosh, that's only four months away. And Harvey, as always, thank you for your helpful information and enthusiasm. The Friday Harbor rendezvous is always a winner, and everyone finds fun things to do. I like to bring my bicycle and ride the island one morning. Others enjoy strolling the docks and small town, or chatting with fellow Brats. Then again, messing about in the boat, sleeping, or hours reading in the cabin or cockpit is just right for many. See you there!

Thanks Harvey for the encouragement to get that painless vessel inspection done during the event. Twice, having the annual Coast Guard Inspection Sticker in our window has saved us from being boarded by the Coast Guard. On one occasion, it was very obvious because the officer looked at me, the current year inspection sticker on the boat and passed on by to hit up the next guy behind me while on the dock.

Thank you to everyone who has PMed the needed information so far in making the group reservation with the Port. Even though the event moorage is on May 12 - 14, keep in mind that the official end of the event is at noon on Sunday, May 15 to keep things straight.

Keep signing up along with your PM information. Look forward to seeing everyone May 12-14 up to noon on Sunday May 15 in Friday Harbor! Gary.

Thank you Sandy for the reminder.

For those first arriving to the event, when you are about one mile out from the Harbor, call to the Harbormaster on VHF Channel: 66a or call in at Phone: (360) 378-2688. Give them your boat name and length. Let them know that you are with the C-Brats event and looking for moorage on Dock H. Please do not take an open slip and think you can contact the Harbormaster later. Many attending the event will take their boats out on the water for the day and come back to their paid slip.

Good initial signups for our May gathering with four of them being Tomcats!

If you plan to attend, but have not yet done so, please PM Gary & Colleen (DayBreak) with the information requested above.

Submitting our group information to the Port of Friday Harbor as a whole allows them to reserve consecutive slips and hopefully a discount moorage rate. It also fosters a great relationship between the Port and C-Brats as they look forward to our gathering each year.

If you aren't sure of your dates yet, take a best guess. You can always PM updates to us as your plans solidify. If you are not sure of your crew, take a best guess. The crew information is more for the C-Brats as it helps us all know who is at the gathering and associate people and boats. (If you are uncomfortable giving out names, we understand.)

We highly recommend the free Coast Guard Auxiliary Safety Inspection. We prepare a list for the CGA of boats and slips (once you've arrived) to help them locate those requesting the inspection.

Look forward to seeing you all,
Gary & Colleen

Hi,

I'm a newer boater, coming up Des Moines, WA with my wife and young daughter. I've looked through some old threads, but what route would be the easiest (safest)? East side of Whidbey and then through Deception Pass at slack tide? Thanks!

- tom

Tom,

Yes, that route is probably the most protected. However, it is a long trip on the water from Des Moines. I would suggest towing up to either Cornet Bay State Park, which is inside of Deception Pass or to Anacortes. You can launch at Washington Park in Anacortes or pay more and sling your boat in at Cap Sante Marina in town. From these locations it is much easier to get to Friday Harbor in a timely fashion.

There is really no need to time your transit through Deception Pass with slack current. Once you're up on plane, it is easy to go through. If it's your first time, just be careful. I have gone through ranging from a 16 foot runabout, 22 and 25 C-Dories and our current 27 Ranger Tug.

If this is your first trip in the area, often times, you can buddy boat with another C-Brat.

Good luck and Welcome.

Tom,

The outside of Whidbey Island can get rough. You could boat up to Hope Island State Park, spend the night on a buoy or stay on the public dock next to the Cornet Bay boat launch to pass through Deception Pass the following morning.

As we get closer to the event, post here again your planned time to depart and I am sure another boater will join you. Gary.

With regard to Deception Pass, (and I 'm sure Patrick has been through it many more times than I have) so for me, being careful is to be sure and take the whirlpools on the side that rotates the same direction you are going. They can get big, and hitting that swirl on the wrong side is like slamming into a wall, depending on how close you are to it --> which you really don't want to be close enough to see 6 feet down into that hole.

There can be some steps too, (Overfalls) that are easier to see if you are going upstream. I try to avoid those going up, or take the small ones (6 inch or less) but coming down stream they are harder to see, and you can take larger ones, which I would do taking straight on.

You do want to go through there on plane. Momentum is your friend.
