34 folks signed up so far. if most make it it should be a great party. What is the record for boats at a gathereing????

Pat, I know there's been talk about some people interested in going up to the Gulf Islands between both gatherings. Caryn and I are considering it.

The same weekend as the Friday Harbor CBGT Anacortes is having its Waterfront Festival. The Anacortes Yacht Club has a tradition of giving rides to the boatless during the festival. I don't know if non-members are welcome to do this (don't see why not) but I am planning to zip back to Anacortes for a couple of hours on Saturday afternoon to participate, and then again on Sunday. If any of you attending the FH CBGT are interested in doing this let me know and I will inquire as to the feasibility of including a Brat contingent. Some of the rides are on sailboats, which are cool if there is any wind, and some of the rides are on a Grand Banks (ultra-boring and slow.) So some PR for our boats might be a fun activity.

Well we've just booked a couple of days off and signed up. Thanks for picking a weekend that coincides with our May day long weekend. :lol: With a couple of holidays thrown in it makes for a nice 5 day cruise. You've even made it easier by picking a port with customs clearance! What a thoughful group. Looking forward to seeing everyone there. Barry, are we required to book with the marina or is this just a show up and we'll make room event?

Glad to see the northern neighbors will be represented, I'm hoping for a couple more of your fellow canucks. Reservations have been made with the harbormaster for everybody so just come as you are. 38 boats and counting :shock: Because of the great response I got a little worried about space and asked just how many they could accommodate.."Ohh 60 to 80 boats" was the answer so there's plenty of room :) Ruthie..better get a BIG cake!!

I was just thinking that maybe we'd bring our laptop with our inside passage trip and some Desolation sound pictures on it. Maybe if Pat and David and anyone else that has done the trip up the inside, brings theirs, we could have a little impromptu seminar for people that might be considering the inside/desolation cruise this summer.

Piggybacking on Larry H's excellent post about the best times to travel through Deception Pass for the Friday Harbor gathering, is anyone planning to launch at Cornet Bay? I'm still trying to decide where to launch since we are trailer boaters now and can't just easily take off from Twin Bridges.

I've never been thru Deception Pass and that sounds like fun but that also means crossing Rosario and coming up thru Cattle Pass, which I've never done either. Anybody interested in joining us? Otherwise, we might take off from Washington Park in Anacortes.

We launch from Cornet Bay but will be going over quite early so we can get everything setup for the CBGT. We go out of Deception Pass routinely...flood...ebb, high...low tide with very little trouble. We normally speed up to about 16-18kts and just drive through. It is a good idea to look for other boats in or entering the pass. I have waited until they clear on many occasions. We normally don't go by way of Cattle Pass, that has you exposed to the bigger water/wind to the SE of Lopez and the pass itself can be ugly if the tide/current/winds are just wrong. Cattle Pass has you in the Pass currents for about a mile and a half. We normally go through Lopez Pass or even Thatcher Pass. Crossing Rosario is very easy if the weather is right. With bad winds/currents it can be very ugly.

Cornet Bay is a good launch site except with minus tides and the parking is patrolled by Park Rangers. We don't have a time of departure planned yet but would be happy to go with you (and any other Brats that are up for getting to Friday Harbor early) from Cornet bay. If the water is right we'll take you out through Canoe Pass ( thats the little bitty one to the east of Deception and is great fun..narrow with a 90 degree turn as you go through but the water is actually easier than Deception pass

If folks are going thru Deception Pass here are the current predictions for Fri 5-16 (For Sat, or Sun see the link below)

Slack is the time when the current is still or reverses. Max is the time of maximum flow in knots and the + indicates flood current at maximum flow going toward the East. A - indicates the ebb current going toward the West.

These currents are fairly strong so the safest and smoothest time to transit during the day are at or near slack. That would be about 8:00am or 2:35pm.

The most difficult times would be 11:07am and 5:11pm.

Boaters experienced with Deception Pass go thru at almost any time, but beginners should go at slack for the first few times.

Thanks Barry, I'm not sure how early we're planning on leaving, we haven't planned that far yet. It's nice to know that our CD22's can handle Deception Pass so well, having never done it before, it would be nice to go with someone who has. So we'll let you know if we can join you thru Deception.

I'm very familiar with crossing Rosario, it can be very "fun" at times but I have lots of confidence in the boat and my experience crossing. Depending on the time, winds and tides, I know Rosario can get lumpy but we've always been able to cross. We mostly cross through Thatcher but it would be fun to go thru Lopez Pass, we've never done that before. I was just concerned about staying in the straits if we go thru the bottom and your post answered that question very well, we won't have to. :wink Unless of course it's one of those beautiful, calm days but we know how windy May can be.

Larry, yes I referenced your post in the first line. That's what got me thinking about Deception Pass. Thanks for copying it over.

We're actually heading up from Edmonds on Friday, planning to leave in the morning and hit the 1430-ish slack tide in the afternoon. In all likelihood we'll be up early and will probably wait it out in Cornet Bay, so would love to rendezvous with any brats who are planning the same passage. Along those lines, if anybody is heading up from Edmonds around that time that would be super as well.

I agree Deception is pretty much OK as long as you don't mix a strong ebb with a strong westerly wind and/or a big bayliner. Those wakes come back off the walls pretty fast.

How is "the kicker"?

Being a new owner and first timer to one of the Gatherings - I would like to join the Friday Harbor Gathering.
Tried to get to the sign up sheet on the web site, but not able to.
Is there a spot left or is it too late? How do I sign up?

You should be able to go to Event Signups at the top of the page, select Join A Group, find the Friday Harbor event and click to Join the Group. Looking forward to seeing you there!
 
I don't think there is a limited amount of space - well, of course actually it has to be finite - but I think in this case there is always room for one more - Barry? The Event Signup should work, I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't...

There is plenty of space for many, many boats (harbormaster said they could take 60-80...now that would be a gathering!!) And...in a general bringing up to date: We have set up tours at the Whale museum for reduced prices and if any are interested in a guided tour let me know and we'll set that up. There is a $25 fee for a guided tour and they can take 10-15 people at a time. We have the downrigger restaurant for the Friday evening dinner. The manager of the West Marine has said she will certainly work with us and that she would come on this site to see the kind of things we'd be interested in. Moorage fee is now down to 0.60/foot so that's getting cheaper but I think that's as low as it'll go. I plan to see if I can work a deal with the local car rental people, (they have vans) for those that might want to drive to English and American Camps both from the famous pig war where the Kaiser of Imperial Germany averted war between the U.S. and Britain over a dead pig. And...for the adventurous they rent mopeds and sort of space age golf carts for touring the island. The plan is to have the pot luck on the dock and breakwater. I'll set up an alternate if weather is crappy. I'm still working on other things so we should have plenty of stuff to do. It should be great fun and I encourage everybody who can to sign up using the event signups tab (you have to be signed in to do so.)
 
Thanks Larry for the pertinent information for May 16th.

I've been through Deception 3 times in my kayak, with others and at close to slack. Each time was peaceful and beautiful, with wonderful views.

The motorized experience will be interesting and I hope to be there at the afternoon slack that Friday.

The C-Dancer crew is planning to make both the Friday Harbor and Anacortes CGGT's. In between we will be cruising around somewhere, maybe the Gulf Islands, maybe the San Juans, probably both.

Since we are now full-time trailer boaters I wanted to know where would be the best place to leave the trailer rig for 9 straight days? I know Bellingham allows for long-term stays but it seems kinda outta the way from Friday Harbor and Anacortes. Does anyone know if Washington Park boat launch, Skyline Marina, Cap Sante Marina or Cornet Bay allow for the tow vehicle and trailer to be kept there for an extended period of time and is it safe?
