06/02 - 06/04 - Lankford Bay Marina, Eastern Shore

I'm trying to figure out what that sound was at the beginning of your last post Tom...was that a Howard Dean screech or an East Coast cowboy? Whatever it was was justified - 31 boats is a great gathering!

Let me know if you all end up doing an early rendezvous, also...might buzz down for a bit.

A think the total will be a bit over the 32 listed by Charlie...
I had a private Email asking about the use of the term "Eastern Shore". It is not a reference to the East (Right) Coast, but rather a term which defines the Eastern side of the Chesapeake Bay, the more rural, water-oriented part. The West side is Baltimore, and the industrial, urban/suburban side. The EasternShore has tried twice to secede from the State of Maryland. A favorite bumper sticker is: There is no life West of the Eastern Shore"....

The "yippee yi yi yaaa" is the recorded shout of pain from "General " Rumsfeld.

We think 32 boats is great. There are some new people that were not here last year, sorry we will miss the ones not coming back for our "2nd Annual" but that also makes room for new comers. This shows that the popularity of the C-Dory has grown on the "East Coast". We look forward to the comradery and meeting new friends.

Just wanted to let cruisers know that since our home marina is Lankford Bay Marina, we will have our van and we can always make some trips into town for food, West Marine or whatever.
The Jolley Trolley is on a schedule but if that emergency comes up, we can be available.

Anne is making up an agenda to hand out on Friday and Saturday morning at arrival time. Last year we had a few spouses that did not know about the Pot Luck supper on Friday night. COMMUNICATE with your first mate.

Looking forward to June 2nd.

May-Jun Calendar Stuff: OK, today, it looks like this: My mother-in-law, and her mother are coming to my home to see my wife for a 4 day visit. Yep, time for Byrdman to leave the nest. No way am I going to attempt 3 generations of hard headed control freak women under one roof for 4 days...even if it is my home and it is well insured... Dates of invasion: 12-15May06. So, C-Byrd is in Mt. Juliet, TN under cover with original 1984, 50hp 2 stroke Johnson. My plan is to go up from Bama avoiding the 4 day invasion, get her (C-Byrd), take her to East Point FL for a re-tro fit of some type of new(er) 4 stroke motor, fix a roller or two on the trailer, new bilge pump, mount a new Garmen 498 plotter/sounder, a VHF, some type of fuel flow meter...., while I am on another road trip to NC to help a friend pick up a 29' boat and get it to FL, (which should give folks in FL/Wefings, time to rig my boat), then, spend a day or two fishing in FL... This should put me in FL with my updated 84 Angler ready for real travel....to.....say... Langford area?? This just might work. Gotta mandatory fun events with Sherryl on 26 & 27 May thru the long weekend, so I could possibly, depart Bama and travel on 30/31st, arriving in Langford area on or about the 1st of Jun. Do the gathering, then back to Bama prior to our departure to Savannah, GA on 10-14 Jun. THis might work.... No promises...but I am trying to make this. Byrdman

Byrdman,
If you arrive early you are welcome to stay here with us...and I'd be glad to smooth out anything that needs to be done to facilitate your arrival.
Hope you can arrange it.

Well, there's a record if they all show up! Just went to 32 Boats with the addition of CADENZA from Vero Beach FL!

Man, 39 boats is a gathering, Pat! Of course you have a slight advantage over there, what with being closer to the factory, a longer tradition and all that. Taking a look at the map of the boats out there on the left coast and those on the right, it looks like you have about 1.5 boats for every 1 we have over here - so on a percentage basis, you'd actually have to pull in 48 boats to beat our 32. But who's counting?

WOW!! looks like both the Lopez and the Chesapeake gatherings will be well attended. Hard to believe over 70 boats at both events. Just a few years ago any gathering was lucky to attract 5 or 6 C-Dories, very interesting to see how this group has developed in the past five years, I believe mostly because of the factory followup, the dedicated membership, along with information sharing, and the quality, knowledge, and professionalism of the group as a whole. Not to mention that we probably use our boats more per year than any other boating group in existence. Just a thought - --Rich

Fiddlers Green is right...it is the boat , and the factory, and the owners who make this adventure happen. We wish the Lopez gathering good weather, a record number of boats, and rare good behavior from Pat. We will struggle along with just 32 boats here on the 'shore...(of course , John's analytic view of the statistics is worth a thought, but, hey, let that pass)....

On another topic. To the "mystery fleet" Please let me know when it is time to unleash the fact that 13 (more) boats are registered and will be moored in the Corsica on June 1, to be released on JUne 2...coming to Lankford.
Four boats from Spain, eight from Canada, one , air freight, from China.

Tom: Will keep both you and Charlie on top of schedule. A new concept has taken place this weekend at my house... My wife and I talked and shared calendars. I was unaware that I am going to Nashville 30Jun-2Jul, then Vegas 3Jul-6Jul, back to Nashville, then home to Montgomery... Then, Canada 21 thru 27 July... in addition to the 10-14Jun Savannah trip. So... maybe I can make this gathering if my boat is ready, and I can also take my boat to Savanna with us too....or just maybe "mosey on down the coast a bit and have Sherryl fly into Savanna...and maybe stay a day or two more and see Tybee Island area... Hummm. Now, just when was it she wanted me to get a job and pay for my boating??? Guess I'll just have to do a better job of doing things around the house myself....when she wants it done of course.. :disgust to save the hired out fund to transfer those funds to the boating fund... maybe. Ya gotta love life in America. Hope to see yall soon.

Terraplane/Tom;

I see on the ADC Chart where Route 50 crosses Kent Island there is a bridge [Kent Island Narrows] that will allow those of us coming from the southern part of the Ches. Bay to pass through Prospect Bay, on the south to Muddy Creek to the north and enter the Chester River. This seems to be a much shorter route and out of the main shipping channels.

Is this still a viable route? If we were to stay the night in that area, which marina would you, or others, suggest?

Hi Sea Angel - yes, that's definitely viable. From the south, it's quicker to head NE into Eastern Bay and then up through Prospect Bay and Kent Narrows – cuts off several miles if you don’t go all the way around Love Point at the north end of Kent Island (chart 12270).

I don’t know the marinas around the periphery of Eastern Bay (and I don’t think there are many), unless you drop down the Miles River to St. Michaels (Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is worth a stop!!) or go right up to Kent Narrows. There are some very nice anchorages around Wye Island to the east (up Wye East River, the starboard fork as you head in). There’s a pretty cove on Wye Island up the East River - go about 0.5 miles beyond the green “3” and you’ll see it to port. If you continue up the East River, an even nicer one is in Dividing Creek. Granary Creek, a little farther up, is also pretty (last time I was there, anyway!). There are some okay anchorages on the Kent Island side, such as Shipping Creek or Warehouse Creek, but they don’t really compare to Wye.

At Kent Narrows I haven’t stayed at any of the marinas, but Piney Narrows Yacht Haven (north of the bridge on the west side of the Narrows) and Mears Pointe Marina (north and east) both have fuel and are pretty much full service. You’ll also find a bunch of restaurants around the area (most on the east side of the Narrows). Anchorages in this vicinity include the area west of Hog Island.

After you get through the Narrows, you’re pretty close to Lankford Bay Marina, but there are nice anchorages up Reed Creek and the Corsica River, both on the south side of the Chester River. Gray’s Inn Creek, on the north side, also offers some pretty spots.

Hope this helps - if you need any details, let me know!

Thanks John.
I will readjust my plans, WX permitting. This area looks like a great Thursday evening stay if we make good time up the bay from the Norfolk area. This could place us at Lankford early on Friday.

I hope we can make the Solomon's Wed. nite and then Kent area Thursday. This seems like a reasonable plan at the moment. I still have to brainstorm with Steve, 'ORCA', and Dave, 'Alma's Only' for details on their schedule. If we do get to Kent Island early, your suggestions are a big help.

Sea Angel,
If you do make it to our area on thursday, call me at 410 639 7943 and let me know where you are. I'll run out to welcome you.

Pat and Patty inform me that Lopez had a total of 33 boats...(weather interfered some)....So, the right coast has a chance to hold the record for largest number of boats..if we get to 34!

Call a friend.

Terraplane/Tom;
You bet... I'l have to make sure I have my Maine/Yankee/Southern charm all warmed up and my pet minnow, Moby Dick, on his best behavior.

Why the last time I had him with me, he caught more fish than I did. I must admit the fish I did catch and pulled in, I had a little problem with it. It took 23 minutes for the Bay to fill in the hole it left as I pull it out. The picture of it weighed 26lbs, so I can't take it too many places due to the loading of the CD.

Tom-

Charlie's fine, just down (not up) the river working on another boat....

Joe, I'm fine. Down at our river place with only a 20K dialup to work with so I don't spend much time at the site. Have been reading it though. Getting my brides 22ft sailboat ready to go in the water with the C-Dory....

Charlie
