06/02 - 06/04 - Lankford Bay Marina, Eastern Shore

Hooray, Robbi...
I love early reservations. Yep, we are going to do it again...pretty much the same...don't fix it if it isn't broken.... the campground is here for you, and the use of the house if you need it.

Sea Angel here;
Trying to encourage the First Mate to make a maiden cruise to the gathering. We have yet to do an overnite, though.. If there were another CD traveling from the Lower Ches. Bay[VA Beach], I think I can convince her to do the trip.

Thanks Bill & El for your notes on traveling light. When we travel to Boston or Maine we fill the trunk of the sedan. The CD25 will have to be a great deal lighter load.. (:

This early a notice should allow us to plan for vacation. Will have to check travel time needs from Va. Beach; else, the land wagon will have to do.

UMMM... I wonder how well her Guiter will fair in CD25?

Hey Art and Steve, hope you both make it. Sally and I plan to be there too, house sale allowing. We'll have our Stafford house on the market, hopefully, it'll be sold by then but since it's an FSBO deal, and that's a prime weekend, we'll just have to see. I trailed Captain's Choice up there last year and probably do the same again..

Jim/Jennykatz...... just saw your private message regarding the Chesapeake Gathering next year. Yes we are planning on going and would be glad to have you join us. As I recall, it took us 3 or 4 days to drive up, I can't drive at night because of a vision problem. We had planned on sleeping on the boat each night, (at Walmart, etc) but it rained heavy each day driving up so we moteled it.

Be sure to visit the signup sheet for this gathering and sign on as slip sites are limited. We plan on staying a little longer then the 3 or 4 days for the gathering as the Chesapeake Bay is a Great cruising area.

Sorry I missed this last year, do not plan to miss it this year...in some boat. Got C-Doy-idus right now. Those who have followed my post know what I am going thru. Long and short of it is this.. I want to make this trip and plan to. Those of you without your boats can jump on with me, however many can fit, with what ever C-Dory I get there. One of 3 boats will show up. FreeByrd, TC24 which I have now....but is "kinda-for-sale", the 18Angler I just bought...but have to put some time on motor(s) before I am comfortable for cruising with guest, and/or a new TC255...depending on the sale or not of FreeByrd, and where I fit in the pecking order of folks ordering new TC255s from this years volley of boat shows. I think orders for 2 have been placed already, and there are some already in the hopper being built.
But, as I said, what ever boat shows up, I can/will take on others as has been extended to me from the left side gatherings. This offer is also good for any other right side gathering I make. So far, Sherryl has not shown any interest, and is saving all her vacation days possible for cruises (on ships...not boats :sad ) as to allow her to retire earlier and we can do the Bill and El gig. That is her kind of travel. I keep telling her she needs to practice...Oh well. I still go and enjoy!!

Looks like 50% of us signed up so far are from the SE section.... We may have to get us a C-Dory convoy going up. If you FL boaters want, and are traveling from your home port areas, we could meet in Florence SC area and travel together up I-95... and I could pick up any left siders who want to fly into the Atlanta airport for the trip up. Or, if not interested.... I will drive thru home (Nashville, TN) and up...and could pick up any left siders who want to take advantage of any good flight prices from SEATAC to Nashville.... and up. Wide open and looking forward to this gathering. I spent so much time tracking it last year...I'd be better off just going this year...and it looks like great gathering and food too.

Convoying might be a good idea, except I've got one problem in that I can't drive at night due to a vision problem. Spoke with JennyKatz from Naples who wants to attend in his new to him C-Dory and we may convoy together and possible met up with "you all"..... Happy Thanksgiven :idea

No problem at all for Daylight only driving/towing. Too many daylight hours for towing in the dark. But, early starts at daybreak are good.. I love the early morning road miles before "big town traffic I gotta go to work" drivers hit the roads... :crook

SLIP RESERVATIONS: Being made thru sign up roster....or do we call and make our own. Some may be signed up to be there...but their vessel not coming with them. Will do what ever is needed.

Thanks for putting this together again.

Byrdman...... last year all you had to do was sign up and as the time drew near, Tom got things sorted out and made the slip reservations....OK on the early rise and no night driving..... We do stop for eats though????? What about overnighting.... on the boat right???

Looks to be about 500 miles from Florence, SC, or at an average of 65mph, about 8 to 9 hours... I'm good for sleeping on the boat in route, or Holiday Inn Expressing it up there. One day for us to get from homes to Florence, SC, maybe search and find us one of the SC C-Brats to park in their yard for the night, then one day to the gathering.

The closer you get the slower it gets. Last year we went over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to avoid the Washington traffic. From the Virginia side on up it was slower going. We overnighted just south of the bridge before we got to Norfolk and from there made it to Langsford by mid afternoon

Sounds like a plan. Let us see how things roll around and who all else will/may join in. Yes, I would like to miss the major trafic surges....and a daylight departure also helps with this.

Roger is right on Byrdman, if you use the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel from Norfolk, it dumps you out on the Peninsula and you are on the Eastern Shore already. If you come up 95 and go across at Dahlgren on 301 from I-95, you're on the "Western Shore" and have to cross the dreaded Bay Bridge at Annapolis. In either case you avoid the Wadhington DC beltway and it's neverending traffic though. Shouldn't be too bad in early June when the kids are still in school but can be on weekends. We used it last year with no problems but you never can tell...

As it gets closer, we'll post some traffic links here to help folks coming by car/trailer.

Thanks Charlie and Roger. Printing this off to put in my Eastern Shore Gathering folder. I truly appreciate the local knowledge.

Byrdman

Byrdman, et all;
I agree with Charlie on the Eastern Shore route north to all points. If you decide to go through Norfolk, that will give you two choices .. Route 64 W to Richmond to pickup Rte 95, etc., or Rte17 out of Hampton/Newport News to Rte 301 .. construction and heavy traffic coming out of the Norfolk area through these areas.

There should be a reststop at Sea Angel's home if we do not make the Gathering, here in VA. Beach; else we will see you there.

The easiest drive is across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and pickup Rte 50 at the Salisbury Bypass toward the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to pickup Rte 301. These roads are in excellent condition. At this point it is best to have more local knowledge take anyone home to the gathering. I would be working from a AAA map guide at this point.

For a car, the fee for the Ches. Bay Bridge Tunnel is $12.00.

May everyone have a blessed, healthy and happy holiday season.

Time for me to catch up with everyone. The event is definitely on...June 2, 3, 4...Lankford Bay Marina...They are looking forward to setting another C dory record! And we hope we can put together i Bay cruise for the days to follow.

This is Terraplane Tom on Sally's Sister...been living here since 1967...and boating on my 8th boat..but first fiberglass wonder, the 22 C. dory.

We had a great time last year and expect to repeat the same format, maybe with bigger crabs and a little more music.

I will be meeting with our committee after Christmas and will then post all kinds of stuff...slips, directions, parking for trailers, etc.

Let's aim for 34 boats...two more than the record...have to keep those left coast people alert.

Red Fox...if you come. we'll give you a free slip and beer.

Tom, I'll do the signup sheets again if you want. I'll take signups from the list on the site.

Folks, if you intend to come, please signup. I'll post the spreadsheet periodically so folks can see what's up. I think Captain's Choice will be there this year again.

Tom, if I can do anything else, I'd be glad to. See if you can find out how early the marina will take reservations.

Charlie

Hi Tom and all. Pat and I will make and donate name badges for this years gathering. I will attempt to include name, city vessel size, and name.

Tom, how will you find bigger crabs? You had some fine looking crabs last year. We do look forward to hearing the rest of your music friends.

We are going sailing on a tall ship this winter for two weeks from St Martin.

God bless you all and Merry Christmas

Fred and Pat Red Lion, Pa.
