07/02 - 07/03, Naked Island, Alaska

True dat, true dat. But I'd burn so much more fuel towing from Wasilla to Valdez. And spend a full day - 6 hours each way- in the Jeep instead of on the water. :cry

I've already been out as far as Lone Island fishing from the Whittier side. I think I remember the GPS showing 73 statute miles on that trip. Burned just shy of 16 gallons. Right at 4.5 miles per gallon, read 'em and weep. :smiled Still had 13 gallons left in the reserve cans on that trip.

Looks like a trip around Naked would be about 115 miles round trip. So that would be about 25 gallons burned with 13 needed for reserve.

And if I know I'll be headed out a little farther It'll be motivation to pull the 18 gallon transom tank (man that thing is just in the way- can't even get to the bilge pump!) and install the new 24 gallon saddle tanks... I bought a pair of 'em last fall but they have yet to get put in. If I installed both of 'em I would never have to carry gas cans again. Man that would sure free up some deck space. :thup

Rod,

The map program I have puts the trip from Whittier to the east end of Mc Pherson Bay at about 52 miles, (45 nm). Hope this helps in your calculations. Space is tight for me too but I could probably carry an xtra 5 gallons for you if you like?
Speaking of space, has anyone shrimped with success around Naked before? I hate to go out without dropping a pot but if it's bereft of mud-bugs I'll leave the pots and puller at home.

Bill

Awesome guys! Count the crew of C-Worthy in. I hope to have a new stainless kayak rack to show off by then.

By the way, I really get some interesting results when I Googled "Naked Island" for images.

Re: shrimp pots at Naked Island: I have a buddy who doesn't like to fish that area because it has a pretty rough bottom. He says he hangs up quite a bit around there. Now, that's not shrimping, but since he is a shrimper, too, I'm guessing that he won't drop pots there for the same reasons.

Not certain if we can both get away from work, but if so you just might see Barrel o Monkeys out there. We traveled around Naked several times last June in our 17' Arima (Bob) - whales were all over the south end, and we caught a few halibut.

Hey, Redfox, I keep this to remind me of why I boat in So Cal! Have fun on Nekked Island....

Hey thanx  coolo pic!! Thats my element :smilep Now, how bout some winter boating...

YouGize... Not sure if the Davidson Clan is still going to be in South Central... :!: By this time... :embarrased . I'm pretty sure we have found a place on PW Island in the SouthEast now (fingers crossed!) Probably be just Mr Fisherman and having a "Brat-Together" 8)

Then again; we been "moving" from South Central for years now... :embarrased Just can't find a better place than good old Anchorage, when push comes to shove! :cry

I'm gonna go take most them crummy "Naked Island shots" out of the album now --- I ain't proud of em! There just scanned slides from yesteryear... :|

Thanks for posting the pics, Greg. Hope you hold off moving long enough to make the gathering. One more season on the Sound wouldn't hurt would it?

CATDOGCAT-- from Soldotna

You can count me in. I'm picking up the Lucky R (soon to be renamed) in Washington next week. Looking forward to exploring PWS for the first time. I usually put around Kachemak Bay. This is my first post by the way.

Are you kidding.... I could not live if it were not for the Sound... that place is in a class by itself to-be-sure... :smilep :love

Welcome "CATDOGCAT" :cat :dog :cat

Hey Greg, I'm not sure there is a timetable for you vacating Anchortown for the temperate clime of Southeastern. As you say, this has been in the mill for a while now. With that im mind I fully expect you to partake in the Naked Island bash and look forward to tagging up with you then if not before.

Cute pic of the Red Fox mimicking the exploits of the reknowned navy icebreaker, "Channel Cruncher".

Also, a really smart move wearing those broad based bunny boots for cavorting about on the ice. If you had elected to do tight circles with your ice skates the pic would just show your head sticking out of the water and the canoe paddle stretched across the hole.

I don't know where Sneaks came up with the ice picture but it had to come from a southern origin. We don't get crappy weather like that in Alaska.

I'll be there, but as you may know already, I'm much better on the www than in real life, I tend more to be a listener first, then write bad stuff latter about it ... (kidding) :xnaughty

Hey; I was hoping to see old AkJack pop-in here, and join!! Might have to haras his e-mail first!
:| :o :o

OH... I did want to say about the anchorage there. I am a real sissy about anchoring and getting sleep  :( What I do is "Technical Anchor" behind a tiny island, in the Anchorage in the "Passage" area. I think we'll all be in that area.

So... (an earlyer question) Who's C-Dory are we all gonna poop on anyway ...  :? (sorry bad humor again... ) :xnaughty

Yes, I would plan on launching in Wittier. I haven't looked at the charts yet. Isn't that the best place to launch? Valdez is a way long drive all the way from Soldotna.
