07/02 - 07/03, Naked Island, Alaska

We've got lots of guests coming up this summer and I may be jumping out of the Air Force after 25 years about that time too...but pencil the C-Biscuit in for the Naked Island Rondy too!

I'd also suggest Cabin Bay :thup for our little armada of "water jeeps". There are good spots to anchor in MacPherson Passage, but we watched a group of three rafted fishing boats drag anchor, and get blown across the passage in a strong S. blow, where they re-hooked :!: on the other side of the bay. I'd bet they had an interesting discussion in the morning about which way was north, eh.

Cabin Bay could be rough if there's a due West wind, but I'm sure we can figure it out when we get there. Just look for the other boats that look exactly like your own.

As for fishing, I caught the biggest Irish Lord I've ever seen nearby. The thing felt like it was about a 50 pound halibut coming up, but when I got it to the surface, I realized it was just the drag from the open mouth of this monster. It was only about two feet long, but the gape of it's mouth could have squeezed a volleyball! Picture to prove it: http://www.c-brats.com/albums/C-Worthy/Irish_Lord.jpg

Great fishing story Dogon! I'll be sure to have my gaff sharp and ready for anything I can poke it with. I've always wanted to catch a Ling cod.

Just remember, read the regs before you go...

The new regs allow landing a ling "by hand or with a landing net" only. No more gaffing allowed (and no harpoons either)... :thdown

And the ling season is closed from Jan 1 to June 30... :thdown

And you can only keep lings over 35 inches (measured with head attached)... :thup

It's so very complicated.

Hello all. Great to see a planned get together for PWS. I was planning a trip from Seward over to the Whittier this summer. You can mark me down as a tenative for Naked Island. If anyone is coming up from down south I'd recommend taking a few days and putting in out of Seward. I'd be happy to share my chicken holes. Also if anyone is looking for an excellent camping destination, Kenai Lake has several camp sites which are boat access only with outhouses, picnic tables, and fire rings. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions or are visiting Seward and would like information.

Be a great idea to head out from Seward!! (for youz on the Peninsula) Better chances of spotting some whales to. Also, the launch-fee and parking-fee are about half of what they are in Whittier!

I'll have to check how much further it is from Seward on the charts tonight. From a glance it looks allot further from Seward. How much does it cost to launch from Whittier?

By the way, I'm leaving to Seattle tomorrow to pick up the new boat. Wish me luck!

Launch fees in Seward are $5.00 and $15.00(I think) for 24hr parking. Chenega village is a possible option for fuel. Chenega is very small but I believe you can get fuel. The western entrance to the Sound is very protected and beautiful. However the run from Cape Resurrection accross is all open and very weather dependant. I was planning on having someone drive my truck and trailer over to Whittier from Seward and haul out there. I would encourage anyone coming up from down south to take some time and explore the Kenai Fjords National Park which is accessed from Seward. Feel free to email me if you have questions concerning the Seward area.
Heres a link to a site about the village.

True, but during the prime summer months it's way-less risky and weather dependant. Used to access Montague and Chenega often, back before the tunnel upgrade to Whittier, I sort of miss the gulf-water crossings (that cool feeling of the ground-swells as you go :P )
I wish someone knew for certain about the fuel situation at Chenega :!: I gave up on them ever since going to my Yamaha 4-stroke and my fuel economy doubled :thup . It was sort of "iffy" on getting fuel at the village back in pre-2000. Maybe things have improved :?: :| .
Another option: The Tenders that are there for the fishing boats might sell you some fuel (I hear :? ) Not certain about anything out there... it's been a few years
:embarrased
It would be safer leaving from Whitter (for-sure) But for those more experienced, it will be funner (and probably better whaling/fishing from Cape Resurrection! I heartily recommend it, if you've already done the Whitter Hassle :thdown If you have not.... do Whitter at least once :thup my experience there always varys. Make sure you pay for all the days you may be gone and leave you vehicle parked! The parking natzi's there might get ornery and chain your tow-rig to a barrel! (then you'll have to go fetch the guy out of bed (if your after-hours :smileo ) and pray they don't slap another fee on you... :crook :thdown

CDC :cat :dog :cat Congrats on your C-Dory day! wish it were me going to do that :wink :cigar

:cat :dog :cat

Thats cool how you used the icons to say my name. LOL!

Flying out tonight @ 9:00. I will get to see my new C-Dory for the first time around 12:30 am our time. If possible I'm going to take it out on Lake Stevens tomorrow morning. Then I'm getting the U-Haul and towing it up the Alcan Saturday Morning. My girlfriend and I are going to attempt driving nonstop all the way here. I figure we'll get back by Wednesday. I'm so excited I didn't sleep last night. I'll be sure to take lots of pics and start an album when I get back.

I'm renaming the boat PLANKTON (the bad guy from Sponge Bob) from the Lucky R.

Also, as soon as I get back I am going to start shopping for a new or used 4 stroke engine Preferrably a Honda or Yamaha. If any of you guys hear of any good deals out there please let me know.

I know this post is getting off the subject. Maybee we should start an Alaska thread?? :idea :idea

CDC,
I don't think there is any such thing as a used 4 stroke Honda or Yamaha in Alaska. The fact of the matter is, it's tough to go to the local dealers and always have access to the new one you want. I had to order my Yamaha from outside last year because there just weren't any in State. I had also looked at the Hondas with the same results... take what they have or order from outside.

Good luck,
Bill

Hi All: Mark (of 3rd Byte fame) alerted us to this gathering at Naked Island. Sounds great! Beth and I have been wanting to check out the fishing around Naked Island for a couple of years. We'll certainly try to make it. Ted :D

CDC ... yup I'm the Icon King around this site ... Heck even the manager went and fetched-up that coolo seegar one all for lil-ol-me :disgust :cigar  hehehe :embarrased

Sounds way too cool pullin it up and all like that, reminds me of 3rd byte Mark on here :xlol

You must be a young whippersnapper to attemt a non-sleep trip and be towing a baby like that :disgust ... I say enjoy your trip through Canada, take'r easy 8) and safe :disgust

I almost went and sold my 2000 F-115 Yami once, to upgrade to a 2003 they had at Deweys here in Anchortown! the guy worked there, and I think was simply upgrading to the new 150 Yami! :smilep It was a hellava deal! Might want to check with them first. I like the place myself :thup
I'd recommend Yamaha if you going to be doing a lot of Gulf Water stuff: mostly for reason of the better performance (and ride) that the steeper-pitch prop delivers. That ain't NO BULL either :!: :!:

Take some pix on the drive up for us :thup

out... :xtongue

Hey, dogcatdog, congratulations on the new boat and have a safe trip up the road. A little shuteye along the way is GOOD! I love that long old road, always something different along the way and always interesting.

Be safe and l'm looking forward to seeing you this summer at Naked Isle.

Hey Ted, the Sea Duck with you and Beth are definitely indelibly penned in for the Naked Island jaunt. Beth absolutely has to be there as I understand she catches most of the fish!

Should be a real cool trip and I'm looking forward to it so much that I am actually going to finish my bathroom remodel so Betty will tell me where she hid the keys to the boat.

If possible I'm going to take it out on Lake Stevens tomorrow morning.
Don't know if you will be "logging" on to this site between now and the time you pick up your new vessel, but I'll be at work tomarrow at the fire station 1/2 mile above the Davies Beach launch ramp on the west side of Lake Stevens. Stop in and look me up.
If you launch at the downtown Lake Stevens launch, go to the fire station a 1/2 mile from that launch and ask one of the guys to give me a call and I'll try to meet up with you.
If'in you don't get this message, I'll be watching for you on the lake.

Hope to see you,
Dave Safford

I'm expecting to see a post by the "Foxmaster" show up soon, without the use of any verbage or english language content, the entire message being being made up of icons/emoticons/ and pics.

That will take Fox's "icon title" to another level. javascript:emoticon(':xnaughty') :xnaughty :xnaughty
