catdogcat-

Just a passing thought- many of the deck caps I've seen have a retainer line that seizes the cap to the base with a nylon covered cable/leader material. You might want to incorporate this into your design if you're fabricating one up yourself. Joe.

There actually was a safety line, it just wasn't attached. This was the first time using the anchor since I've purchased the boat. Live and learn I guess. I will definitely be incorporating one into the next one. I was going to make it out of galvanized sheet metal but have decided to make it out of fiberglass. I'll post pics of the fab process. Not that anyone would take interest as I'm the only one dumb enough to lose it.

CDC,

You'll hate the cost but, I got both of them at West Marine in Anchorage. They come with a phony little chain to attach to the boat but as you've no doubt noticed, I haven't had much luck with that built in safety device. This last time (I hope) I spliced a length of cord to the hook and attached that to a piece of wood too long to make it through the hawse (sp) pipe and so far have hung on to it. It was a quickie set up and will someday attach it in some way to the inside of the boat, but it does for now.

Dogon: As for extra time on my hands I don't have a lot of it. Just the weekends and a lot of three day weekends during the summer. On 4th of July weekend I plan on taking a 4 day weekend. When you ask if I want to fish or sight see, I guess I want to do both but mostly fish I guess. As for the downriggers, I have no clue on how to use them. What size Rhino Nuts do I need? What kind of clips do I need for the fishing line? Do I need to buy abunch of them in case I lose them? I would love to join someone for some PWS king fishing. Then they can give me a demo. In the past when fishing in Homer I usually just use a diver with pretty good success. Last summer my friends and I caught 13 kings in one day in Halibut cove. The thing is, without downriggers I've always been limited to fairly shallow water.

Thanks for all the info on the deck pipes. I didn't think I would find a replacement cap that was the same size. Nice that I don't have to make one now. Gives me more time this weekend to finish making my floorboards.

CDC,

I like the Scotty downrigger clips. I have also gotten some "Pro Release" clips that work very well even with light lines. The Scotty clips are much easier to use if you have heavy enough line but don't hold well on light lines. I haven't used the Pro Release enough to know how I'll like them when it gets bumpy though. They work by wrapping the line around a pin that then clips closed. So it takes a little more effort to use them.

For my downriggers I like to have extra stuff on board. I carry the following...

2 extra spools of cable
2 extra weights
a package of wire splices and pliers
a box of fuses
4 extra releases (2 Scotty and 2 Pro-Release)
I also plan on buying a spare belt (I have Scotty Electrics)

There is nothing worse than being an hour from the marina and losing most of your cable and everything attached to it while not having spares to get back fishing again!

Hey dogcatdog, I got something for you. I knew I had one around but had to locate it. I've got a hinged deck plate that I don't need and if you can use it your welcome to it. It looks new and was just taken around the block for a test drive by a little old lady. Even has the original gasket.

Give me a PM and we can figure how to get it down to you.

Please move C-Biscuit from the "tentative" to the "Definately Attending" column.

I got orders to move from Alaska to Tuscon and instead of moving, I retired! Got to love the Last Frontier.

I'll be in the sound this week looking for black bear, salmon, halibut and ling cod. Give me a shout if you happen to be out on the H2O this week too.

Dogon Dory, Dan

Thanks for the personal invite but we won't be able to make it. The delayed reply is because the company was deciding on which dates to grace us with their presence. I'd much rather be in PWS than here entertaining relatives.

Thanks again maybe next year
Wade

I'm heading out tomorrow AM and plan to fly the Jolly Roger around Naked (Island) if the weather holds. Anyone else going out? I've got a two night kitchen pass and plan to do some shrimping and looking for the wiley halibut. Maybe do a little scouting around too. If anyone else is out and about, give the Beer:Thirty a holler on 16.

Beer Thirty!
That has got to be the best name for a boat. I'll miss you by a day out in the Sound. My buddy had to slip our trip by a day and we won't make it out on the water until Wednesday evening. We'll be out all Thursday and most of Friday. Butts, bear, and maybe a Black Butte Porter or :beer :beer ...

Good luck to you on the shrimp, I'm still trying to figure how that works. Got two pots and about 600 ft of line but the sound is big water and I've got no clues.

C Biscuit,

I'll be out till Thursday noon-ish. Gotta make the 5 o'clock for work Friday, but if you're in the area give me a shout and for the price of a beer I'll see if you can be taught to shrimp. Bring your gear.

Bill
