07/15 - 07/17 - Bellingham C-Brat Gathering

Ruth & Joe – thank you for your hospitality and a fun gathering. You two are the best.

I was lucky to make it back to Olympia. About seven miles north of Point No Point I hit a semi-submerged three foot two by eight board. I did not see it as it was a dark board in dark water and the top was level with the water. I must have hit it dead on at 17 knots with the bow then it went under the boat and my prop hit it. I stopped and tried to see what I hit then circled slowly back and saw the 2x8 almost cut in half. I thought I must have a bent prop or something because of the damage to the 2x8. I raised the engine and turned the prop with a pole so I could see all three blades, everything appeared OK so I continued to Olympia without any further incidences. This evening I took my daughter out and when we were about 25 miles from port I heard the engine momentarily speed up. A short time later it again speeded up and the boat started slowing down. I knew I had spun a hub on the prop. We limped back to Olympia at 9 knots. Couldn’t get the RPM’s above 3700 without the hub slipping. I figured hitting the board Sunday must have weakened it and today it gave way.

Well that was fun. Susan and I had a great time as always. We got there in time for pizza on Friday, well cold pizza but that's my favorite type.

Saturday was all about crabbing and we did well. the weather gods repeated their performance from Friday harbor and had the decency not to dump on us until after dinner was complete.

The run home Sunday was flat and wonderful. just a touch of fog but not a breath of wind.

while I have your attention I want to float some ideas by the pub regarding this gathering. As many of you know Joe and Ruth will no longer be hosting this event and Susan and I have volunteered to take over. Now at the dinner this weekend Joe told folks that I might move the event to Everett. I have no idea what so ever why but i have not desire to host it in Everett. What I would like to do know is if anyone is interested in holding the event in La Conner?

The advantages I see in la conner are that 1) its closer for a lot of people coming from the south but to far for the folks north of the border 2) There is a lot more to do closer. farmers markets and tons of shopping with in a very short walk. the southern guest dock is right on the edge of town. 3)More small hotels for non boating guest, art galleries, restaurants and shops. 4) good crabbing near by. It can still serve as a jumping off or ending for folks vacationing in the islands.

the only down side I see is that its in a channel with current that only has a 5 minute slack but its not as bad as it sounds. the south channel has not as bad as it sounds either. i have ran it many times and if you stay to the right side of center of the channel you will be all right on anything more then a 0 tide. I watched a 70 fter come up from the south channel today while in la Conner helping my dad.

So any opinions on la Connor over bellingham or any suggestions on a different location?? I am all ears.

Tom, on the way home Lori and I were talking about Anacortes as a possible new venue for the Bellingham CBGT. However, we would be more than happy to help you put the event on, whether in LaConner or Anacortes.

Does the LaConner marina take transient boats? Would they put us all together? One thing that I know people were not happy about at the first (and only) Anacortes CBGT was that Cap Sante did not put us all together. I think I can get Dale (the Harbormaster) to do a better job with that.

The yacht club would also be available for any gathering other than Friday nights.

Sounds good given space for all and walking access to amenities. We will be a bit more careful near the south entrance next time and maybe pick and tide higher than -1.

Warren, yes they have long guest docks both at the north and south marines. I would prefer the south marine but both are close to town. we would have no problem fitting 30 boats. There is also a pump out and fuel near by.

Tom,

Great idea. La Conner has all the facilities needed and has hosted bigger (but not better) rallies.
We will be happy to help.

If we can get enough of us to go up the Swinomish in convoy maybe we can prop wash the channel.

Ruth & Joe,
Thanks once again for a wonderful GTG. We will not forget that Bellingham was our first meeting with our 22 and was therefore the cause of us becoming "Brats". Your's will be a hard act to follow although I'm not so sure that the new tradition of a mass baptism by the elements which Barry started in FH is going to be a winner.

Good to meet all the old friends and to make new ones. Bella is quite lost at home with no-one but us to give her belly rubs.

Also thanks to Aurelia for the post about the thin water. We have a friend who went aground in the same spot a few weeks ago and it was good for them to see that their chart reading was not at fault.

We always give that buoy a wide berth as I have seen birds walking real close to it.

As Tom says, the channel in from the S side is shallow for the first 300 yds or so and don't even think about cutting the corners coming in. The deepest part we have found is slightly S of the range line from the markers in Dugwalla bay.

It is actually a good idea to go through (carefully) at a 0 tide and record yourself a GPS track to follow, because it will be very obvious just how close the mud is.

Tom, is there a venue for the potluck at the marina, such as a yacht club? It would be nice to not have to worry about whether it rains.

Warren

yes there is a marina club house or yatch club building at the south marina. I will check to see if we can use it. Also there is a lot going on around la conner. there is a car and oat show coming up soon that takes up the south marina guest dock but we might be able to use the north marina ( 100 yards away maybe) at the same time. there are also shakerspear plays going on all summer on the weekends a short car drive away.

we seem to have a lot of yes's so far but I also want to hear the No's and forseen problems. questions about ramps and sling launchs. there are both in la conner but depend on the tide. I will try to get a calander of events from the marina for next year so I can see whats going when.

We'd be interested in La Connor and the car show sounds intruiging, but I don't care to walk around looking at various types of oats.

We love La Conner and we should be finished " looping " by then. We'll look forward to being with our C-Brat family again where ever the gathering might be !!

Mike at Pacific Marine Exchange is offering 10% off coupons for purchases this month :thup It's quite an experience going through his store and don't forget to go downstairs. You can also place your boat parts with Mike on consignment.

I just purchased a small item on ebay. It turns out it is from Mike Kimmich/Pacific Marine Exchange. The item itself cost significantly less than at the big local boating stores. Shipping was free and fast. He has a 100% satifactory rating on ebay and I can see why.
