 Hi C-Brats, being new to C-dory land I thought I'd like to invite you to a gathering in Nanaimo BC.
I'm thinking the week after the Bellingham event if you'd like to extend your cruise into Canadian waters. Fuel is cheaper than it was last year and our loonie is down way below par. Friday July 31 to Sunday August 2. The Nanaimo Port Authority docks right downtown (www.npa.ca) will reserve space with a credit card to hold it for you. Rates are $1.15 foot (Canadian dollars) per day with power available 30 amp at $3.50 a day.
Showers and laundry are available as well as abundant shopping and dining facilities. Also Newcastle Island park is a short ride across the harbour. And World Famous Dinghy Dock pub (Canada's only floating pub) is also a dinghy ride away. Float plane service for fly ins. Let's see if we can get some boats out. For US boats entering into Nanaimo customs is available as is Sidney at the lower end of Vancouver Island. For those wanting to come by ferry you can come via Anacortes or Port Angeles or Tswassen or Horshoe Bay. Launching can be done at a new launch area by the BC ferries . :thup

That is a great idea. We often use Nanaimo as a staging post. So far by land but in the future, by sea, and it has a lot to offer. How about a bus trip to the Crow and Gate for some real beer (sorry Pat). Not quite the Hippy Pub but as close as it gets to a good British Pub.

I am interested in the "new" boat launch by the BC Ferry. Is that at Horseshoe Bay or where?

As an ex C-Dory owner but a permanently afflicted/addicted C-Brat I am finding more similarities than differences with our newly adopted clan of steroidally challenged CD's. (RF-246's) Even our bottoms look alike  so maybe we can "share" a few rendezvous in the future.

Hi Merv, the launch ramp is next door to the Departure Bay landing of the ferry. it is called the Brechin Point launch ramp and all brand new in the last year with good lighting and fresh asphalt. Nice ramps, and easy access/ turn around.
George

Great idea. We'll have to look at our calendar because I think we have a conflict that week but if not, we've been wanting to get up to Nanaimo this summer.

Way to get the ball rolling.

Hi Merv. Anyone trailering in can park safely at Brechin ramp they have long term parking and security patrol. For folks coming in boatless parking is right across the street from the marina in underground parking. The Port Place theater and Bastion hotel are across the street from the marina. Lots of parking and lots to do and see.

We are Planning on being in Nanimo that weekend. Our plans are to cruise the San Juans & Gulf Is. after Bellingham, then end up in Nanimo for a couple of days. We were up there two years back, stayed at Newcastle for a night, but didn't get into Nanimo.
There is a lot to explore in the city and in the park.

The Crow & Gate sounds like a great Idea. I can almost smell the beer and taste the fisk & chips.
Lets do it.

Absolutely! We've been nudging our Canadian contingent for years to host a Gulf Islands CBGT. We enjoy Nanaimo, particularly Newcastle Island.

We would like to do this one, but it is dependent on the timing of our annual meeting with relatives in Desolation Sound. End of July may be a little late, but the dates for our rendezvous in Desolation are not firm yet, so we will see. Sounds like fun. We love Nanaimo.

This would be a great CBGT. I might even talk Kate into going. I have stopped at Nanaimo several times coming and going to places north. The trip to Ketchikan being the last one.

:thup WOW, that's a lot of interest for one day! You all are ready to cruise.
Early days for details and I've never attended a gathering so I'm open to suggestions. I've talked with the downtown marina at Port Place about reserving moorage for us. They are most helpful about getting a list of folks coming and a credit card # will hold your space. It is a busy weekend I'm told but we are the first group to express interest so they are willing to work with us. I had thought of Newcastle Island to hold an event at and the reason I didn't put that out as a gathering spot is because it is a Provincial Park and one can't reserve space. Also no power, showers, laundry etc for those that want them. As Newcastle is but a 5 minute boat ride from the marina it may be a good spot for a Saturday night potluck and I bet I can reserve space for that. I'll check. Given the interest so far we'll need a sign up sheet soon. Send me ideas as to what goes on at a gathering of C-brats. Lots of hanging out in the sun and visiting I'll bet. Dinghy, kayak races, sack races, tug of peace contests that sort of thing. I'm looking forward to meeting a bunch of you. Will keep you posted. George :smiled

Not sure of the dates this early, but we would like to go if we can. We have passed thru there in the c-dory but have never stayed there. I did over night there once in 99 with my folks on a rented krogen. The last boat from the dingy dock pub is a loud and cheerful little tug.

It's on our calander - good idea to contact Joe and Ruth - they do a great job with the Bellingham Gathering and would have lots of experience to share with you.

i am sure we will be there. will be nice to meet more fellow c-brats, and if anyone is heading up island further afterwards we can hook up there also, we will be up in the broughtons right after. if you need any help george give us a call.

OK, is everyone reserving space here now? We had a prior Nanaimo event on the 2007 Gulf Islands C-Brat cruise, it sure seemed like the entire NPA docks were taken up by apparently derelict fishing boats, wasn't even really room to tie up a dinghy when we came over from Newcastle Island...but if we can reserve a slip, then being right downtown would be great!

Nanaimo is some tasty bait I'll bite. Barring the unforeseen, count me in.

Newcastle Island is one fabulous rock, and I'd be happy to spend several hours walking its trails with anyone who's interested. And if we're lucky enough to have Professor Robbi along, plan to learn lots about plants, roots, rocks and more. The city is great big fun, too.

Thanks, Ghone, for proposing this. Better prepare for a batty southern swarm, because this one's a little different than previous gatherings.
