08/17 - 08/23 - 2008 Catalina Island Adventure in Paradise

Well...I made it in my new to me 19'er  So...with the approval of the Delta, Bay 22's and 25's I've been told that my 19'er can make the trip to Catalina :D. Still looking for some choppy waters
See you at Del Ray on the 18th. of Aug.

Grover ( Tee Ten )

This will be my 1st C-Brats outing with my ol' boat!

I'd like to do some diving if anyone's up for it. Also let me know if there are specific arrangements to make.

I'll be heading out from Redondo ...

Thanks,

Thompson

Thompson-
Glad to see you with a boat at last. I know you have been waiting and looking for a few years now.
I expect there will be some diving while we are there. I'll bring my gear but rent the tanks from Two Harbors.

Roger

I have several questions about the Catalina Cruise. This will be our first and was wondering about....Do we anchor ( I will have a shore boat ) or is there a buoy available :smiled ....If we launch at Marina Del Ray on 6/17 in the AM should I plan on heading right out to Catalina  . Will some Brat show us the way :) .....Once out there are there showers on shore available to use :smilep ....Are there restaurants or should we plan on meals aboard  ....We will be driving down from Lake Tahoe on the 15th or 16th and heading for Motel 6 in Ventura. Any one from North Cal want to hook up :?: and caravan down I-5 or HWY 101?

We will be cruising down from Channel Islands Harbor to Two Harbors on Sunday the 17th.

Roger
Thanks for filling me in. If we launch from MdR on the 17th should I make reservations for a slip? What again is the distance from CI Harbor to Two Harbors?
If you don't mind, I might give you a call. What is your number.
Thanks

Steve,

It is 57 nm from Channel Islands to Two Harbors. We cruise at 15 knots for a trip of 4 hours.
There will be 2, maybe 3 of us leaving from CIH direct to Two Harbors.
We will have to leave Catalina early Thursday or Friday for a motorhome outing that weekend.
If you go to MdR, check in with the dock master at Chase Palm Park, just down at the channel from the launch ramp on the right. It is first come first served.

Roger

edit: I sent you my cell number- check your pm

HI Everyone,

Well it is almost time for the Catalina Cruise.
Many of you have done this drill before. The good news each year is we always have some new folks.

Most of us will met Sunday August 17th at Chase Palm park in Marina Del Rey. Historically most folks depart on a Friday; which would be August 22nd. When you get to Marina Del Rey, you will need to go into the office adjacent to the guests docks and pay your overnight fee. I will find out how much that is.

We usually go out to dinner that night. Some folks prefer to eat on the boat and do that.

The next morning August 18th, we will head out the harbor at a time to be determined and make the 26 mile trip across. We like to do that on the early side so we have a nice flat trip across. It is a great crossing with all the boats travelling together.

Once we get to the island, Sam & Kerry; Roger and Pat; and Joel and Susan; usually great us at the entrance to the ishthmus. They are a GREAT welcoming crew. We then get our "string line" assignments and proceed to moor our boats on the very secure mooring bouy. For those of you who have never done this it is a piece of cake and there is always plenty of help if you want it.

That Monday night we will have out annual BBQ kick off night. I will bring the trip tip. Everyone else usually signs up to bring something as well. Steve usually brings his famous baked potatos! So think about what you want to bring.

I spoke with Catalina Yachts and they will be joining us on Wednesday. For the past few years they have been very generous supporters of this great event that was started by Sealife Mike.

The rest of the time is very casual and informal. Roger usually heads up a fishing trip to either Santa Barbara Island, or last year the gang went to San Clemente Island.

Sam and Kerry can you grease the skids to get us reservations at the isthmus?

The surprise of the event is what boat will I show up in??
I will be very sadly putting islander up for sale very soon as I have bought a downeast lobster boat. If all goes well on that deal I close on that boat August 1st. The good news is that it very much looks like a C-Dory!

Being that this is a C Dory event, and I may be there in another boat, may be of concern to some. Please let me know if you have any concerns. I do plan to continue supporting this event in years to come, I will just be in Wendy mode. For those of you who have been on this cruise before you know of what I speak.

Ron,
Congrats on the new boat-- I know you have been looking for one for the past few years.
Will you be cruising down from CIH with us?
Will you be slipping the "new" boat at PCYC?
Will you be joining us on the Santa Barbara Cruise?

Roger

Hi Roger,

Thank you very much.

I will be keeping my boat at PCYC.
Would love to join you guys at SB if you'll still have me. :D
Its about the great folsk that make up the C Dogs!
As for heading to Catalina direct, I have not decided that one yet. We'll keep you posted.

Ron,

I think you and Wendy make a great pair. Actually, she already has......no I won't go there!!

The bigger question is: will Roger's boat be ready for the trip? It seems to be taking forever to get it finished. It's so forlorn looking sitting there with it's wires hanging out!

At this point I'm still planning on joining the fun, bringing Muffin for the first time. No Ed, no Bob, just my fairly silent, lovable companion. Don't know how many days I'll stay, or if I'll shoot over with Roger and Joel, or do the usual at MDR.

Hey Ron, a BIG CONGRATULATIONS on your new boat, that's just fantastic. I know how much you have researched and researched and researched (x 1000) all the models and choices, in fact, I thought you may have researched it too much to the point it can't be done!!! I'm very much looking forward to seeing your boat, those are great looking boats and have oh so classic lines.

My belief, once a C-Brat/C-Dory owner, always a C-Brat/C-Dory owner, PERIOD. I'd feel very bad if you stayed home from ANY of the events just because your current boat doesn't happen to have the same logo...my 2c. Again, congrats! :thup :thup :beer :beer

We have another diver! My daughter just finished her scuba certification yesterday after 3 boat dives (30-45ft). Day before she did the mandatory beach dive in 2-4ft breakers. She is a very tired puppy. I did all 3 boat dives with her yesterday and stayed in the background to not disturb the class and exams/exercises. Then they let me buddy up with her for the rest of the dive after the exams of that dive. We were in beautiful kelp beds most of the time, lots of fish, scenary, bat rays, sheephead, seals, an underwater cave, lobsters, etc. She passed 100%.

So, since both of my kids are going on this one, looks like a pretty full boat, 3 divers, gear, plus a guest. Glad I have a 25! See ya'all there.

Steve Dora-Jean:

That is great about your two kids coming and now both divers!

I broke down for this year and bought a new regulator and my very own BC. I also bought a dive computer that I never had before.

I too am excited about going diving at Two Harbors.

Sincerely,

Jim

PS- Steve, I also broke down and took a refresher NAUI course per your recommendation.

I'm a diver, too. Looks like we'll have enough divers to film a James Bond movie remake. Remember the underwater fight scenes? Spearguns, mini-subs, cutting air hoses with knives, etc?

I believe my schedule is to be there four days, Sunday through Wednesday. Not likely I can stay for Thursday and Friday.

If it's full on Sunday when I come out, I'll go out to maybe Cat Harbor or Emerald Bay and then come back around on Monday morning.

Jeff

Jim,
Thanks, and wow that's great that you've got your own reg, bc and instruments. I think of it as life insurance, knowing your own stuff as critical as it is, is definitely worth the money. Looking forward for sure.

Jeff,
Sunday string line shouldn't be a problem, it is one of the slowest days/evenings of the week, most people go home that day. If you know for sure you'll be there on Sunday, let us know Saturday night or call one of us on Sunday and we'll make sure we hold a spot for you. I like the James Bond thoughts (except the cutting of the air lines... ), maybe even a Sea Hunt adventure would work!

I think I will bring my gear also....usually I am so sick of diving by this time of the year I don't want to dive.....but this year has been a real slow diving year...some dock work, but very little diving...

Anxious to get going.... Early next week we head south... got a few things to do before we get on our way.... mount the new fins on the motors... possibly get the hydraulic steering mounted...etc...

See Ya All Soon

Joel, Susan and Roxie...( the service dog)

That'll be great Joel, bring that gear! Kinda like the TV repairman, all of HIS TV's are broken...!

Melinda is so jazzed on diving, she's at the "observe" stage, just loves being down there checking everything out. She doesn't spear fish or want to catch a lobster (in season), but she said she'll be glad to point them out for those that do! Come October, she's going down with us for sure... 8)
