09/01 - ?? - Grand Slam of Great Western Lakes

Roger

VHF and cell phone for us except for really remote cruising then we purchase a set amount of minutes and time for our sat phone. Cell phone coverage on Yellowstone Lake is very spotty except for West Thumb. Jackson Lake good coverage most of lake. Have used cell phones on Flaming Gorge and Lake Powell, but can't remember just how spotty. Can't imagine really needing anything more than what you have.

Jay

Thanks Jay,

I was mainly talking about keeping coms with the other c-brats especially since there maybe some simultaneous land travel in doing "The Grand Slam" and possible enroute communications.

Roger

Since few are hams, the best communications en route and between the lakes will be cell phone -- on Yellowstone, cellular is basically out except a few spots (like Jay says, West Thumb is about it). We've had a great time in Yellowstone (with two of the grandkids) -- cool evenings and delightful days. See you guys soon.

Very good Bill. We are all packed and ready to go. All I need to do is hook the CD to the RV and head out. We should be on the road in a couple of hours from now.

Roger

We plan on leaving the Sacramento area on Sunday - unless we get antsy and leave early. I am planning a leisurely drive and stopping anywhere that looks interesting (have never been able to do that before). We will probably arrive Tue. the 19th or the 20th.

Fires are mostly out in Yellowstone now. One smaller one was near the marina and causing some smoke visibility problem, but mostly cured now. The others were closer to Cody, and big smoke from them -- helicopters, fire crews, bombers -- the whole 9 yards, but they did a good job and Mother Nature largely finished them off with a good soaking rain near week's end.

Now back in CO, to return the g'daughters for school, and then head out maybe Wednesday or thereabouts to get back to Halcyon.

We are making progress. We left Pensacola around noon on Wed and got to Monroe, La the first night. We didn't feel like cooking so we got a roasted chicken from a local grocery store. The chicken didn't exactly taste fresh. We had the rest for lunch on Tuesday. All was going well until about 4pm, then Mary Jo started getting really sick. At about the same time one of my alarms on one of the trailer tires went off and showed the pressure down to 14lbs. When I could pull over and check sure enough the tire was low on air. I changed the tire and we headed on to Texoma Lake. By the time we got there Mary Jo was really feeling bad and was not up to assisting getting the the boat and RV into the very tight RV site. It took me getting into and out of the RV about eight times checking that all was well and I wasn't going to hit anything. Wed morning she was much better. We launched the boat and cruised round on the lake for a couple of hours. We left there around noon today and are now in a campground at Guthrie, OK. We're almost half way there. Our location can be traked by clicking on the TRACK ME HERE link in my signature.

Roger

Though bad enough, good to hear Mary Jo's bout with the chicken bug ended as soon as it did.

Before you posted had already checked your progress on the SPOT map. Amazing how well the campground your in tonight shows up on the sat map. Also noticed you had taken a boat ride yesterday. It is interesting to follow your traveling progress.

See ya in a few days,

Jay

Well we are in Hays, Ks and my guess will be here for a spell. I have a 2007 RV with Ford V10. The transmission has a Tow/Haul position. We were about 10 miles East of here when the Tow/Haul light started blinking. I pulled over, stopped then re-started. I re-engaged the Tow/Haul and all seems to be fine and shifted ok. We got off I70 to get gas and when I turned int the parking lot I lost the transmission. Would move but very little if high rpm. I pulled the dip stick on the transmission and it is covered with brown metal flakes. Is under warranty so I called Ford and sent me tow truck. Of course it will be Monday before they will even look at it but I have no doubt that the transmission is toast.

What a bummer!! Hope they get on it quick Monday, but my experience with warranty work on the road has not been good, seems they generally will put you in back of the line. Your about due for some good luck, so hopefully they will get right on it and you will still make the gathering.

Jay

Wow! Really sorry to hear about the transmission. I hope you can get it fixed quickly.

I have a 2001 truck and I always tend to be concered when starting a trip. I thought mine might be acting up but it seems fine so far. We are in Elko, NV. Will probably get to Yellowstone Monday or Tuesday.

Steve

Sorry to hear about the tranny. We have a 2000 RV 30 foot class A, which we have towed with since day one--and at 55,000 miles we replaced the tranny--mostly to put in a heavier duty torque converter because towing the CD 25. We had no problems with towing the CD 22, or a Honda Pilot, which weighs about the same.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Roger - I wish I could give you more than moral support for your dilemma. Is it possible for the warranty folks to provide you with a towing rig to get to Yellowstone?, i. e., if you can't get quick repairs? Hopefully, it is a linkage problem or something not totally major. If your transmission fluid shows no overheating, I doubt if the transmission is ruined. Being a 2007 rig, you shouldn't have that many miles on it. We hauled a 22 CD all over the country for years with a Ford half ton with an automatic and 4.6 liter engine. Zero problems. Good luck. John

Thanks for all the encouragement.

OK, Without boring you with all the details, I'll sum things up.
Saturday we pulled into a gas station in Hays, Ks and the 2007 RV acted as it was in neutral. I called the Ford road service number and they dispatched a tow truck to get us to the Ford dealer. We sat in the Ford parking lot Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The good news is they have a power hook-up for RV. No water or sewer but thats OK. They did not look at us until about noon Monday. They first dropped the pan. Nothing really telling there. There were metal shavings but nothing like I expected. They then put the pan back on added fluid and did the pressure checks. All values were very low. Next thing was to pull the tranny and take it apart. This reviled the clutch was burned up and some of the bands had been slipping. With this information they were able to work up a cost estimate to email to Ford but of course it was too late to do on Tuesday. Ford was contacted first thing Wednesday. To my surprise it only took Ford a couple of hours to replay with the answer of “replace rather than rebuild”. This was good news because that should be faster. Just get a new tranny and put it in. There was a transmission in a town about 120 miles East of here. They were going to have it overnighted which would have put it here some time Thursday. I suggested that I just drive over, pick it up and bring it back. I could have it here by 3pm (more later on what I drove over to pick it up). So this is what I did and I had it here right at 3PM. The mechanic unloaded it and started working on it. I told him that if he could finish by the end of the day(6PM) there would be a 50 dollar bill waiting for him. He perked up and was getting interested in the job. It looked as though things were moving in the right direction so Mary Jo and I decided to see what there is to see in Hays, Ks, This really is a nice little town. We returned a little before 6 to find that the RV was in the exact same state that it was in when we left. We did not find out until this morning that the problem was WRONG transmission. The right one was suppose to be on the way an due at any time. It did get here at about 9 AM. The problem was that they now had “our” mechanic working on another car and when he finished that one he pulled in another one to start on. This did not sit well with Mary Jo. Now, you all do not know Mary Jo yet but she weighs in at about 98 lbs but don't let that fool you. As a retired State of Florida probation officer I have see her makeover 250lb redneck men cry. Back to the situation... She with her STONG southern “charm” talked to the service manager. By the end of the conversation “our” mechanic was dispatched to get back on our job. We think again that all is well, at least for about 30 min, then Brian (our mechanic) stops working again. Here comes the parts manager over to our C-Dory. By the way we have been “camping” in the C-Dory, in the parking lot since Tuesday. He says a little more bad news. This transmissions has the wrong cooler with it. So, no way we're getting out of here today. The right cooler is being Fed-Ex from Michigan. With luck it will be here by 10 tomorrow. In the mean time Brian did get the transmission in and all that is left is the cooler. I don't know which is worse to keep thinking that this repair is going to be over and getting disappointed or just knowing from the beginning that it would tke this long.

Now to an aside. The people we have met in this town can't be beat. On Sunday, we decided to breakout the bicycles and see the town. It's only about three miles long. We get to the far end and we have four flat tires. We found a service station with air but we can only go about two blocks before the tires are flat again. We push the bikes to a place that looks like it may have some air. It turns out that this guy has an internet auction business for things too big to ship. He sales all of the state of Kansas surplus equipment and stuff like that. Anyway, he just puts the bikes in his truck and takes us back up to the Ford place. On the way, he get's our whole story. He insists that I ride back to his place and get his old Mazda truck and use it while we were stuck here. What a guy!!

Thats the adventure so far..... Are we having fun yet???

Keep your fingers crossed that we get out of here tomorrow. If you see us move on SOPT you will know we are back on the road.

Good luck on getting it fixed today! Any hint why it failed? Signs of over heating
wrong cooler?--since I believe that the cooler is separate--or are they just replacing the cooler because of the possibility of metal shavings in the system.

We had a tranny temp guage installed in ours--just for peace of mind. Even with the 30 foot RV, towing the CD 25, We never saw over 200 degrees on the coolant return line even with the grape vine or other I 5 grades.

Aren't these folks in the small towns great!

Could not detect any reason for the failure. I have temp gauge and it never showed anything but normal temps. There was never any indication to me while driving of any slippage until the BIG ONE. With Ford on the RV tranny it automatically comes with new cooler. They do flush the line to get out any metal that may be left over. The cooler just arrived, however, my mech has disappeared again. I haven't seen him for about 30 min. It maybe time to turn MAD DOG Mary loose again. :) :)

Hi Roger,
Sure hope you get going soon!

We have 5 cd22 here on Lake Yellowstone and the last two days have been very nice. We had one day with 50mph gusts so no boating. We have seen Elk, Wolves, and Girzzly. We don't have internet at the marina so have to travel to get a signal.

Let us know if you are still comming this way. Were you going to the other lakes also?

Best of luck,

Steve

Jo-Lee and I had a fantastic time of it. What a great combination of people and place for wonderful memories. If the rest of the group is still up there or at Jackson Lake we will be rejoining them this holiday weekend. Roger and Mary Jo with new transmission arrived at the Marina late Sat. We had to pull out Sun morning so very little time to share with them.

Had 35 photos I would have liked to have posted of the gathering, but ran into my usual frustration with photo posting. Allowed one photo up then only "No resizing required
Error: Invalid image:" or "sorry you cannot access this file directly" message on the photo posting pop up page. My frustration max level has been reached for now. May try again another time.
