09/03 - 09/18 - Desolation Sound 2005

Great pics guys! I hope to get mine up sometime this weekend but I am going to have to stop looking and start working. :roll:

Now that you have some experience how is the AirHead working out? If it works as advertised you probably had no holding tank duties during the trip.

Steve - the Airhead has been GREAT. There is virtually no odor, but for some strange reason, folks at Sequim declined our offer to stick their heads in the bowl to see for themselves...however, groups congregated within a foot of the roof vent for this puppy, eating, and drinking, and I am pretty sure that if there had even been a whiff, we would have heard about it. In Desolation we did empty the liquid tank, but we were free from having to deal with an overflowing Porta Potti or holding tank...We can highly recommend the Airhead based on experience to date.

Thanks for the update on the AirHead. I have some friends with a 26ft boat and they are interested in the AirHead.

We are leaving tomorrow AM. What is very strange is that I still have not made the decision on how to get to desolation sound / princess louisa / Broughtens yet. My co-pilot and ultra fair weather sailer has decided to go along on the first few days of the journey. So, calm waters for the first few days are a priority.

I sorta think that the trip to Lund BC by road is in the future. It's close to Desolation Sound.

The ferry fares from kingston will run about $290 to Lund. The Black Ball from Port Angeles is about $225 as an alternative starting point. The Trip across the straits from Campbell River may cause co-pilot mutiny but that looks like the fastest cheapest way to go. With high cost of fuel this look like the most practical. That would put us in at Campbell River or even Port McNeil I have even considered just launching here in kingston and winding through the San Juans. You can still buy a lot of fuel with the cost of the ferry fares .... either way.

In any event we are headed north tomorrow The old boat has been largely refitted...and the co-pilot who previously showed no interest now does not want to be left behind at least for a few days. I am hoping she catches the boating bug. She is a good sport and a lot of fun. (the boat and the wife)

The trip across from Campbell River to Desolation Sound is not a big deal. Just be careful going around Cape Mudge if strong winds are going against a big tide rip.....not fun. All said, 99% of our trips over and back have been a piece of cake. We were caught in that situation once before and, as I said, it was not fun but our 22 cruiser handled it like a pro.
Port McNeil to Desolation is not an option.......way too far backtracking back southward. Comox to Desolation is something you may want to consider.......greater distance with more open water to cross but a bit shorter of a drive by road.

Current weather conditions at Powell River are windy and lumpy. Currently a strong wind warning in effect. We are planning to launch around noon when its supposed to calm down and head south along Texada for an overnight on Jedidiah Island on the west side of Texada. I can see most of the way to Lund from my house and its pretty well white caps all the way. Lund to Desolation sound is only about 7 NM or so and once in Desolation sound you can find an arm or inlet to explore that most times is much calmer than Georgia Strait. Weather forecast is for calmer conditions starting sometime this after noon and continuing for the next few days. At least its nice and sunny and warm.

Thankyou Ron and Tom. This will be our first trip to desolation so once we get our feet wet we'll have a better feel for it. Johnstone Strait seems like most places and good and bad but has a reputation for being quite bad when it wants to be. Desolation should be better. ...any fish out there?

We will be launching Kerri On in Pacific Playgrounds Rv on Sunday 22nd. Then on 23 rd head for Melanie Cove Desolation Sound for a couple nights then Lund, Powell River and Comox for the cbgt. Keep an eye out for us, join up? We will listen ch 16 and ch68. See you in Comox. George
