09/10/05 - Erie Canal

Hope you guys are having fun in the big ditch! There is an album set up in the Cruises and Events section to show us all just how much fun it was.

The gang is assembled at Seneca Falls and had a great dinner out last night at a good Italian Restaurant. Weather is perfect and all's well. All who expected to come are here.

Hi El & Bill,

Your write up and photos are wonderful. You really captured the spirit of our gathering.

Other C-Dory owners should watch PBS next march. The PBS film crew was at Pittsford to video the arrival of the C-Dory Flotilla. Then they interviewed the Admiral and Bill. The PBS crew hopes that their documentary of the Erie Canal is shown nationally in March.

Exsqueeze me? Dun? Bill? One lousy pic ("lousy" in the sense of "one lousy" NOT "lousy pic") of the Erie Canal?? We Upper Left Coasters would be dying of shame if that were all we could come up with for a major event...now, I know Bill will populate Halcyon Days with a bunch of fine pics, but it would sure be NICE if the rest of you could share your experience with us here...

We have over 40 pics on the Erie Cruise on Halcyon Days, and don't want to duplicate pics here, so for our pics click on: www.geocities.com/bill_fiero/eriegath.htm
We're still on the canal (technically speaking, on the Oswego Canal) and fall is marvelous here. Terry on Last Dance is a great companion and we seem to ferret out all the ice cream shops and great restaurants in each little town.[/url]

Most folks think boats run on gasoline, but, the C-Dorys on the Erie seem to do very well on Ice cream and Pizza. Pat and I only went as far as Fairport and we each gained a few pounds. We are sorry to have missed all the fun the last 4 days ,but, at least we only have 2 extra pounds to loose. Did I mention we can buy RED CAT wine in the Pa State Stores! Mr. Black our cat seems to be distrubed when we go on so much about the RED CAT. Terry how do you think Red CAT will go with crabs?

Hi Pat,

I posted a bunch of pics on the C-Dog site and hoped to avoid duplication by directing folks there. Since I guess that isn't working, I'll post some here when I get some time. I've been doing hospital duty all week for my mother. I'm afraid we East coasters are too busy eating and drinking our way across America, and not paying enough attention to our photographic responsibilities. We'll try to do better. :)

Yes, well, as long as you're aware of it and try to do better, we'll let you off the hook this time!

Pat and Brats,

I've posted some pics of the Erie Canal Cruise. I can't match your quantity, but I'll try to do better next time...maybe! :?

Maybe others will post also!

Hey Dun,

I've got serious Eating and Drinking to do here. Do ya think I have time to scan & post photos, too? After that Erie Canal trip, you can't expect me to cut down on my caloric intake cold turkey. OK, after a few more meals, I'll try to post some photos as good as yours. One disappointment is that the Aquaduct Portraits are lousy. The sun was in the wrong direction, so those photos aren't good. Thanks for posting yours. They're great.

The February 2006 "OFFSHORE" magazine has an article on cruising the Erie canal. It will remind you of the fun we had last year. Even talks about going into the Lock 29 Tavern! Like us, she and her crew enjoyed the history, the people and the restaurants along the canal.

The author, Betsy Frawley Haggerty, writes about an 8 day cruise in Oct 2004 on one of the rental canal boats. She enjoyed that experience so much, that she spent all this summer on the canal, in order to write a book. Since I've always enjoyed her writing ( she was the editor of Offshore for years), I'm looking forward to her book.

Thanks Rick for the hint of Feb06 Offshore mag. I will have to go get it. My wife does better with mag articles rather than web reading. Looking at possibly taking FreeByrd to Oregon for some coastal fishing in early Jul06, then wander up to Alaska for some Jul & Aug cruising, then possibly coming back down and shifting over the NE coast for the canal trip...and maybe follow the foilage down... Who knows,,,, more current and near future I am following the FL gathering rumblings that are starting to take shape for some Feb06 boating times.

Terry brought down Bill from NY....who is now in FL at the west side of the crossing.... I had a blast with these two Yanks...and would love to spend some time crossing the ditch with "Padra Bill" from NY.
